Boston rapper Scientifik recorded two albums in the 90s, "The Most Blunted" and the more familiar and recently re-issued "Criminal". "The Most Blunted", considered a demo from day one was denied a proper release yet mysteriously was pressed up as a white label LP around 1996 (perhaps capitalizing upon his untimely death). So for the last 14 years the record has lived on in the boom-bap afterlife of vinyl bootlegs, hissy dub cassettes, and low quality MP3s. That is until now. Traffic Entertainment and Executive Producer Edo. G now present Scientifik s "The Most Blunted" as it was originally recorded and intended to be released. All production duties are handled by Joe Mansfield of the Vinyl Reanimators (most famous for his "I Got To Have It" production for Edo G. and later on 7L & Esoteric). It ain't hard to tell why the music is still captivating. On the mic Scientifik is certainly competent, and by 1992 standards he operates correctly, dropping jewelz and relating crime sagas in a soldierly, commanding voice that flexes just enough to reveal his hunger and intensity. And it doesn't hurt that some of the beats are absolute bangers as Joe Mansfield flips samples made popular later on by Nas, DJ Premier and D.I.T.C... available on CD & double LP.

Original score composed by Hugh Martin & Ralph Blane.Originally released on Capitol (W930). Includes liner notes by Hugh Martin. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Some soundtracks are more interesting for the people involved with them than for the music they contain. Such is the case with the modest movie musical The Girl Most Likely, which opened in late 1957 and spawned a soundtrack album in early 1958. The film was a remake of the 1941 comedy Tom, Dick and Harry, about a woman, played by a non-singing Ginger Rogers, who struggles to make up her mind among three suitors. The new version starred the reliable Jane Powell, the songs were written by the team of Hugh Martin and Ralph Blane, best-known for Meet Me in St. Louis ("Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," "The Trolley Song"), and the music was arranged and conducted by Nelson Riddle, who did similar duties for albums by Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, and others. The result was a group of competently sung, pleasant enough songs that touched upo

Recording information: London (04/1960).When Columbia Records came to record and release the original Broadway cast album of Frank Loesser's 1956 musical The Most Happy Fella, the company opted to present the show as a whole in a three-LP box set, an unusually lavish treatment that emphasized its near-operatic character. Four years later, The Most Happy Fella finally crossed the Atlantic to open successfully in London's West End on April 21, 1960, and HMV Records contented itself with a conventional single-disc LP, which is given an unlicensed reissue here by Sepia Records 50 years later. While necessarily less complete than its predecessor, the album gives another good account of Loesser's ambitious work. Unlike many British versions of musicals set in America, it is not plagued by bad American accents, and its performers are assured and comfortable in their portrayals. But then, some of them were quite experienced by 1960. New Zealander Inia Te Wiata, in the title role of Italian immigrant wine grower Tony,

It might be the parties. Or maybe it's the roasting of chestnuts. Or the caroling out in the snow. Whatever the reason, most people consider the holiday season to be the most wonderful time of the year. That's certainly the case among the members of Take 6, the a cappella group that has been mixing elements of jazz, gospel, R&B and vintage doo-wop for nearly 25 years. Winners of 10 GRAMMY® Awards, 10 Dove Awards, one Soul Train Award and two NAACP Image Awards, the group has made an indelible musical and cultural mark in the past quarter century - whatever the season. Every member of this brilliant vocal team - Claude McKnight III, Mark Kibble, Joey Kibble, David Thomas, Dr. Cedric Dent and Alvin Chea - has held onto fond childhood memories of the holidays and made them a part of their adult lives. The timeless magic is very much a part of the their new holiday CD, The Most Wonderful Time of the Year, a ten-track collection of seasonal favorites that are as heartwarming as a crackling fire and a festooned evergreen. The primary objective in the making of the album was to create a sense of familiarity, says McKnight, who founded Take 6 in the `80s with some classmates from Oakwood College in Huntsville, Alabama. "We wanted all the songs on this album to be the kind that people would hear and say, `Oh, yeah, I sing that at Christmas time,'" he says. "We each picked songs that we sing with our families every year at the holidays... We just wanted to make a record that would, for most people, just put out a really cool, all-around Christmas vibe." Mark Kibble, who arranged six of the album's ten tracks, focused on keeping things simple, yet incorporating some of the harmonic spin that has become the Take 6 trademark. "The basic idea was to just let the Christmas melody ring through, and present it in a way that's interesting but still familiar," he says. "You shouldn't have to bend your ear too hard to enjoy a Christmas song. It should take you right back to those early Christmases when you were a child." In the end, says Kibble, accessibility was the overriding objective in crafting these holiday tracks. "We wanted to record songs that were simple enough so that anybody listening could follow the melodies and sing along," he says, "and yet still be ourselves and give a little bit of the harmonic backdrop that Take 6 is known for." This holiday season, when there's much mistloeing and hearts are glowing when loved ones are near, sit back with Take 6 and enjoy The Most Wonderful Time of the Year.

Personnel: Dakota Staton (vocals).Arranger: Sid Feller.Another of Dakota Staton's fine outings from the latter half of the '50s, More Than the Most finds the singer working her magic on a varied selection of standards and relatively obscure sides. While maybe not as well-regarded as her famous debut, The Late, Late Show, this Staton release stands as one of the singer's better early efforts. Enveloped in Sid Feller's urbane mix of romantic ballad backdrops and West Coast-style swingers, Staton wraps her coyly seductive pipes around standouts like "East of the Sun," "September in the Rain," and "Some Days It's Monday." Mixing in some of Dinah Washington's muscle and Sarah Vaughan's airy sophistication, Staton ably navigates this fine program of classic pop-jazz. ~ Stephen Cook

One of the better Bobby Womack anthologies around, The Very Best Of collects most of his biggest hits and most influential songs from the period (including his song for the film Across 110th Street) as well as the scathing "Harry Hippie" and the ballad "Woman's Gotta Have It." In fact, this actually serves as possibly the best single-disc collection of Womack, since it not only contains his biggest hits (excepting the work he did in the early '80s), but it's also much more concise and focused than the two-disc set Midnight Mover, and even has the edge over the single-disc collection Greatest Hits. What's more, this collection also contains several cuts, including the soulful "Got to Get You Back" and the funk-laden "There's One Thing That Beats Failing," that are not available on either of those. There may be some slight quibbles (and Womack's most famous composition, "It's All Over Now," falls out of the range of this collection, so it is not included), but as a sampler of Womack's work from his most product

The penultimate pairing in Ace's series of 2-On-1 reissues of the original Scepter albums of the Shirelles brings together two highly acclaimed, and very rare, albums that came out on Scepter's budget label, Pricewise, during a time that the group was in litigation with the company and refused to record any new songs.Swing The Most and Hear And Now were budget only in name, as the repertoire is of the same high quality as anything found on their official Scepter albums. In fact, many Shirelles fans consider these to be two of the very best albums of the girls' entire career. Many of the tracks were unissued prior to their appearance on this album including their original versions of Oh Not Not My Baby (Maxine Brown), Get Rid Of Him (Dionne Warwick) , That Boy Is Messin' Up My Mind (The Orchids) and His Lips Get in The Way (Bernadette Castro). The selections also include several Shirelles hits that never appeared on their Scepter albums, including What Does A Girl Do and Sha-La-La (covered in the UK by Manfred Mann).Swing the Most and Hear And Now were originally issued in mono only, but we have done our best to locate all the stereo masters that still exist for these tracks and present them here wherever possible in full stereo. This is another valuable addition to a series that will conclude in early 2010 with the pairing of The Shirelles Sing the Golden Oldies and their live album, Spontaneous Combustion.

Poland boasts a long and exquisite tradition of carols and pastorals (Koledy i Pastoralki) which are the heart of Polish Christmas. These ancient and most beautiful songs are sung in families and in church throughout the holiday season. The Polish Christmas carol or "koleda" is derived from the Latin word Calendae, meaning "first day of the month". Polish Christmas carols are almost all anonymous, having been composed by the people. Their origins date from the fourteen century, and many from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. "W Zlobie Lezy", believed to have been composed in the fourteenth century, is considered to be the first Polonaise. The Polish carol has an essentially folk song quality which makes it specifically national. The melodies are characteristically Polish - cheerful, tender, and even humorous - typical of the Polish peasant or mountaineer. The Infant Jesus, poor, homeless, and born in a stable surrounded by the familiar domestic animals, appeals to the hearts and imaginations of all peoples. Koledy are very joyful songs announcing the coming of Christ on earth and through His grace, the rebirth of our souls. This tastefully released in 2008, by the Polish label Polskie Nagrania dig-pack CD, includes all the most popular Polish Christmas carols, such as: "Jesus, Heaven's Infant" (Jezus Malusienki), "To the Town of Bethlehem" (Przybiezeli do Betlejem), "Let Us All Go " (Pójdzmy Wszyscy), "Rejoice Bethlehem" (Dzisiaj w Betlejem), "God is Born" (Gdy sie Chrystus rodzi), "Midst Quiet Night" (Wsrod Nocnej Ciszy), "Hush-A-Bye Little Jesus" (Lulajze Jezuniu), and is masterfully performed by the best choirs from Poland: Mazowsze, Slask, Poznanskie Slowiki, and the Choir of Warsaw Cathedral.

Most Relaxing Jazz Standards in the Universe contains tracks comprised of mainly romantic standards. While short on improvising or energetic interludes, this is a decent set that combines Kenny Burrell, Toots Thielemans, and Woody Shaw with less than obvious inclusions by Bobby Hutcherson, Sadao Watanabe and Pat Martino. For those who appreciate jazz as romantic or soothing background music, this disc will do the trick. ~ Al Campbell
