NTSC/Region 0. Head bangin' DVD from Progressive Metalers Andromeda. The performance was filmed on October 31, 2006 at the Wyspianski Theater in Katowice, Poland. Their setlist concentrated on the band's Chimera album but also included tracks from older albums Extension of the Wish and II=I. This DVD includes plenty of "Progressive Metal at its very best," plus bonus video footage (featuring bootlegs and clips from the band's tour and gigs across Europe), two interviews and much more. Commented the band: "We are all very excited about this release, [as] we have put our hearts and souls into its creation. It's full to the brim with stuff to dig your teeth into. The concert was professionally filmed in an old theatre in Poland this fall and it looks and sounds awesome. There are loads cool of bonus material, stuff we filmed on tour, pictures, interviews etc. Don't miss it!". Metalmind. 2007.

Not the egregious foul it seemed to be in theaters, Hercules stands up as an entertaining spritzer of an animated feature. The continual peppering of in-jokes and cultural references becomes less irksome on video. That there's no majesty or awe invested in the beloved Greek legends also seems less of an error. Also on the plus side is the bounciest Alan Menken music since Little Shop of Horrors. With Zeus's blood in his veins, young Hercules's amazing strength makes him an outcast (sorry, that still doesn't fly), so he trains with a satyr named Phil to become a hero. Along the way Herc meets Meg, a common mortal who falls hard for him. They're both against the jocular Hades, who has to destroy Hercules to take over Olympus. The hydra is the computer-animated set piece for this little number, a no-chance attempt to beat that wildebeest herd from The Lion King. --Keith Simanton

Soon after meeting Dan's brother-in-law Rick, the trio finds themselves miles from home and far outside their comfort zone. What started off as an innocent trip spirals into an outrageous series of events none of them were prepared for. What the critics are saying."At first glance, this story of three normal dudes trying to get through a raucous night out will bring back memories of "American Graffiti" and "The Hangover." Thanks to a great cast with impeccable comic timing, "Heavy Times" stands on its own." - Charles Tatum, eFilmcritic.com"Technically, the film thrives. The cinematography is clean, the sound levels are all mixed well, and the soundtrack is surprisingly kick ass." - Scott Knopf, Filmthreat"The well-defined personalities and sharply mapped out characters allow the viewing experience to be far more meaningful in a genre where the comedies tend to be cheap, tawdry, and bong–obsessed. Heavy Times lets its story take the lead, allowing the film to emerge as a strongly acted and obscenely funny excursion that will make as lasting of an impression on audiences as Rick himself." - Joe E. Holman, Holmans Movie Review"...this is an original road trip–style flick unlike any that have come before it. The dialogue addresses so many instances in every day banter we would all like to deconstruct. But nothing is "like" anything, just ask Gunther." - Geofree Capodanno, TheMan-Cave"The journey this everyday trio of nobodies take isn't to Montreal, but into and outside themselves. They learn a little more both about who they are and about the world at large; because they are our surrogates, we get to experience some of that journey for ourselves too. This story delights in dragging us along with the lead trio into places none of us want to go but we leave smiling nonetheless." - Hal Astell, Apocalypse Later"Heavy Times shares the awkward spirit of films like Tim Skousen's The Sasquatch Gang, Terry Zwigoff's Ghost World or Jared Hess' Napoleon Dynamite in its small, core cast of characters" - Rondal, Strange Kids ClubThis product is manufactured on demand using DVD-R recordable media. On 4/20/06, Blackalicious and around 1200 fiends from the Pacific Northwest piled into Seattle's heralded Showbox Theater to capture some boombastic moments in time. On this, their first ever DVD, Gift of Gab and Chief Xcel alongside their incomparable supporting cast, delivered a legendary performance sure to rank high in the annals of Hip Hop. Joining them as a part of this 45-day tour was Lateef, Pigeon John, LifeSavas, and Fat Lip of the Pharcyde. The energy that was in that smoke-filled room that night in Seattle was mind-blowing and the way it translates on this DVD from the HDV shoot and superb pro-audio mix is sure to satisfy.

During the Swing Parade craze of the 1940s, it was hard to turn your head without encountering a Swing Parade. With the popularity of Swing Parades soaring, a full length motion picture was inevitable. Unfortunately, the film we got was clearly rushed out to capitalize on the Swing Parade fad. How can we tell? There doesn't appear to be a single damn Swing Parade in the whole movie!Instead, we get the Three Stooges, who wouldn't know a Swing Parade if it bit them on the...Perhaps we're overreacting here. After all, a movie with mannish landlords, songs about blind mules, and Larry must be pretty ripe for mockery. And if it's called Swing Parade but does not feature any actual Swing Parades, then all the better! Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett of RiffTrax.com and Mystery Science Theater 3000 make no false claims: They provide no Swing Parades, only hilarious commentary.

Director Thomas Mignone helms this distressing tale, which follows several victims of child abuse as they try to make sense of their adult lives. Brittany Snow (JOHN TUCKER MUST DIE) stars as Balery, a young prostitute whose clients like to indulge in some twisted perversions. Balery's life overlaps with a number of other young adults who endured a similarly tortuous upbringing, and are trying (and failing) to put the past behind them. Mignone combines some impressive visual effects with brutal interactions between Balery and her clients to tell this unsettling story.

As an audacious experiment in the art and distribution of m
... Read more
As an audacious experiment in the art and distribution of motion pictures, Bubble is a twofold triumph. Released on DVD a mere four days after its U.S. theatrical release (in only 32 theaters) in January 2006, this ultra-low-key drama was the first of six films by maverick director Steven Soderbergh (produced in partnership with HDNet Films and 2929 Entertainment, founded by Internet pioneers Mark Cuban and Todd Wagner) to be released simultaneously in theaters, on DVD, and HDNet cable TV, effectively closing the traditional "window" between theatrical and home-video release platforms, and causing many theater owners to boycott the film in protest over its groundbreaking strategy. To accommodate this paradigm-shifting milestone, Soderbergh and Full Frontal screenwriter Coleman Hough reunited to craft a working-class murder mystery that's perfectly suited to its experimental purpose: Quickly shot on high definition video, it's a riveting 72-minute exercise in minimal style, located in the depressed border town of Belpre, Ohio, and employing non-actors from the region who played an active role in creating their mundane everyday dialogue. Chubby, middle-aged Martha (Debbie Doebereiner) and twenty-something slacker Kyle (Dustin James Ashley) work in a drab doll factory, molding and assembling rubber doll parts, passing dreary lunch-hours with small talk and clinging to modest dreams that will never come true. When an attractive single mother named Rose (Misty Dawn Wilkins) is hired as a temporary employee, Martha's secretly possessive affection for Kyle is silently challenged, leading to an act of violence that obliterates their daily routine. In dramatizing this passive love triangle, Soderbergh (serving, under pseudonyms, as his own cinematographer and editor) emphasizes the stilted, soul-crushing rhythms of lives that have been stunted by loneliness and isolation; they live in a bubble, as it were, and Bubble is arresting in its visual precision, finding unexpected beauty in physical and emotional bleakness. Obviously not the kind of film that draws a blockbuster audience, Bubble exists on its own terms, capable of captivating a receptive audience, regardless of format or context, without losing its experimental edge. DVD extras include a video introduction by Soderbergh, the original casting interviews with the film's non-professional actors, and more. --Jeff Shannon

New Englander's claim it is a unique and original American sport. Southern boys agree, but argue over just where in America it originated. Sociologists see the roots of this sort of mechanical mayhem and wanton destructiveness in the thrill-seeking rabble-rousing entertainments of ancient Rome. Pure Americana or Classical derivative, "DEMO DERBY" has a special place in movie history. In the summer of 1963, "DEMO DERBY" opened in Boston with "ROBIN AND THE SEVEN HOODS." The same day, in Hartford, New Haven and Worcester, it opened with "VIVA LAS VEGAS." In the next ten days, it was booked into 61 theaters all across New England. But when it was paired with The Beatles' "A HARD DAY'S NIGHT," it played on more than 6,000 screens, all across America. And after its spectacular first run, it continued to be booked into theaters and drive-ins for TEN MORE YEARS!If you remember Madras shorts, penny loafers and crew cuts, don't be surprised if "DEMO DERBY" brings a smile. It's so real, so us, that by the time the show is over, you may have to look outside to be sure your old car isn't still there. So, turn your DVD player into a time machine and buckle up for a wild ride down memory lane.WARNING: We, of the sixties generation, have been romanticized for our rebellious idealism. Unless you want your children (and grandchildren) to know just how incredibly naïve and innocent we really were, KEEP THIS DVD UNDER LOCK AND KEY!This product is manufactured on demand using DVD-R recordable media. If there's an undersea adventure with high-tech equipment, macho posturing, and lots of underwater photography, you know James Cameron must be swimming around the vicinity. Add the fact that Sanctum was released to theaters in 3-D, and it's clinched. Cameron served as executive producer to this crazy tale of a cave-diving expedition forced to improvise when a typhoon inundates their Australian location. (The film is allegedly based on a true event by co-screenwriter Andrew Wight, but it might be safe to conclude that the original incident was a jumping-off point for the high melodrama on display here.) A globetrotting billionaire (Ioan Gruffudd, of Fantastic Four) is underwriting this exploration of a hidden cave maze, which explains why he gets to bring his girlfriend (Alice Parkinson) along. As a measure of their thrill-seeking habits, we are told they met on an Everest climb. The cave-diving boss is a crusty old pro (Richard Roxburgh), who is rough on his underlings and even rougher on his teenage son (Rhys Wakefield); naturally, the cataclysm that follows will be an occasion for some extreme father-son fence mending. As cornball as these elements are, and as generally toneless as director Alister Grierson's ear is with the dialogue scenes, Sanctum does work up some bona fide thrills: the sheer power of water is unleashed at a few memorable spots, as is the panic of losing an oxygen tank at a crucial moment. It's also pretty brutal, with a steep body count and a few grotesque bits of bodily injury. It ought to be easy to dismiss Sanctum as a silly piece of boy's adventure, but--curse you, Cameron!--one must admit that the thing is awfully effective. --Robert Horton

Academy Award Winner Meryl Streep (Mamma Mia!, Its Complicated) is an unforgettable Mother Courage in Tony Kushners adaptation of Bertolt Brechts masterpiece, Mother Courage and Her Children. Along with Academy Award Winner Kevin Kline (Wild Wild West, A Fish Called Wanda), this gripping documentary pulls the curtain back and digs deeply into Brechts motives and politics, unearthing the playrights famed (and famously clever) testimony before the House Un-American Activities Committee. For the first time in Meryl Streeps career, the film offers both an exclusive look into the actresss craft, and also on the play itself--whose themes of warfare and violence have both parallels to life in the 21st Century and Brecht's tortured history in America. DVD includes commentary from Academy Award Winner Michael Moore.

SEEN NATIONALLY ON PBS "In 1978, Oakley Hall III, the brilliant and charismatic founder of the Lexington Conservatory Theater, had it all. Living as king of a fiercely loyal band of actors/acolytes, his writing flowed as smoothly as the whiskey he consumed with gusto. Together, his merry band transformed the run-down Catskills camp where they worked and lived into their creative paradise. Fueled not only by art and passion, but also by sexual energy, drugs and booze, Hall and company staged obscure absurdist plays as well as daring reworkings of classics such as Frankenstein and A Streetcar Named Desire. The theater was red-hot, garnering breathless reviews from critics, and Hall's just-completed epic play, Grinder's Stand, would soon be optioned by Joe Papp's Public Theater. But theatrical convention requires that such brilliant ascendancy be followed by a fall, and in Hall's case, it was brutally literal, a devastating crash onto a rocky ledge from a high bridge on a bleak, foggy night. THE LOSS OF NAMELESS THINGS is the harrowing tale of Hall's fall from grace, a bittersweet look at what was recaptured and a heartbreaking reminder of what was lost forever. " - Independent Lens, PBS. This is the ORIGINAL DIRECTOR'S CUT, with over twenty minutes of additional footage not seen on PBS, including readings from Oakley's play, Grinder's Stand.
