A down-on-his-luck illusionist befriends a pretty admirer, and finds that his constant quest to impress her may be his ultimate downfall in this animated fable based on an original screenplay by Jacques Tati and directed by Sylvain Chomet. Now that the theaters and large performance venues have been taken over by rock bands and pop singers, the illusionist has been forced to ply his trade at small gatherings in bars, caf and basements in order earn a living. One day, while performing in a small Scottish pub located on a remote island which has only recently been wired for electricity, the illusionist encounters a young girl named Alice who is captivated by his otherworldly abilities. Alice believes the downtrodden performer possesses genuine supernatural powers, and agrees to accompany him on a trip to Edinburgh, where he's scheduled to perform at a modest, out-of-the-way theater. Her affection and enthusiasm inspire the illusionist, who in turn uses his talent to lavish her with a series of extravagant gifts. Unable to muster the courage to tell his starry-eyed admirer the truth about his trade, the illusionist continues giving until he's got nothing more to offer. This picture marked Chomet's first following the 2003 arthouse smash THE TRIPLETS OF BELLEVILLE.

In Kenneth Branagh's loving tribute to actors and the theater, a London actor named Joe (Michael Maloney) finds himself in a rut. His career is going nowhere, his life seems on hold, and he's beginning to lose touch with the reasons he became an actor in the first place. Faced with the prospect of spending a miserable Christmas season alone and unemployed, Joe has a flash of inspiration: He vows to produce, direct, and star in the production of HAMLET he's long dreamed about. Assembling a ragtag cast mostly made up of actors who also couldn't find work, Joe finds himself with only a few days to mount the greatest play in the English language in an empty church. Along the way, Joe and the cast rediscover the joy in performing live theater that is often lost in the cynicism of trying to forge a career. Now they have only one question: Will they be able to find an audience?

Bonus clips include Bobby Troup's history of the jazz drum set from 1958 and a great segment featuring The Gene Krupa Jazz Trio impersonating Russian musicians from 1946.Classic Rock Drum Solos:"Wipeout," "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida," "Toad," and "Soul Sacrifice" were recordings that became the cornerstones of rock drumming and, thanks to Hudson Music, they are among the many legendary performances contained on this DVD release. Hosted by rock drumming legend and historian, Carmine Appice, Classic Rock Drum Solos is a comprehensive collection of rock drum solos that traces the development of the phenomenon with vintage footage of pioneers from the 1940s and 50s, rare film from the golden age of the '60s, and awe-inspiring video of the pyrotechnic players of the '70s and '80s."Before I ever touched a pair of drumsticks or knew what a snare drum was, I saw The Gene Krupa Story," recalls modern drumming icon, Neil Peart. "Krupa's showmanship and rhythmic grace shined a spotlight on the drums and the drum solo and I remember thinking, I wanna do that!"I was totally influenced by Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich," says Vanilla Fudge's Carmine Appice, who was also inspired by the drum solos of Louie Bellson, Max Roach, Joe Morello, Sonny Payne, Roy Haynes, Art Blakey, Jack DeJohnette and Tony Williams. "I got speed, showmanship, the concept of melodic playing, and a lot of other great ideas from the jazz masters."By the mid 1950s, however, new forms of popular music were being created by a new generation of musicians. Along with the baby boomers came rock 'n' roll music, rock 'n' roll drumming, and an even more spectacular type of drum solo.In discussing the details of his performance on the disc, Michael Shrieve (Santana) recalls, "Well, it was shot at the Woodstock Festival (August 1969), which was pretty incredible. The thing that most people don't realize is that when Santana played at Woodstock we didn't even have a record out, so it was amazing that we were able to win the crowd over like we did. But, we played that show like we played all our showswith lots of intensity and passion."It wasn't until a year later, when the Woodstock film came out and we were on the road in New York City that we were able to see the movie. We went as a group and stood in line with everybody else. As the showing before ours let out, people who had just seen the film were pointing at us in the line and whispering to each other."We went in to see the s

Four survivors of a mysterious plague of darkness flee the shadows that seem to have consumed all of society in this thriller from SESSION 9 director Brad Anderson. Detroit has fallen ominously silent; the power to the city appears to have been cut off, and the streets are littered with the clothes of people whose bodies are nowhere to be found. Desperate and terrified, movie-theater projectionist Paul (John Leguizamo) seeks shelter with television news reporter Luke (Hayden Christensen), frightened physical therapist Rosemary (Thandie Newton), and trigger-happy 12-year-old James (Jacob Latimore) in an inner-city bar owned by James' mother, who has apparently vanished along with the rest of humanity. Momentarily safe thanks to a power generator that keeps the clutching shadows at bay, the group ponders how to stay alive as Rosemary fears what fate befell her missing infant son, and Luke conceives a plan to seek out his estranged wife in Chicago. ... Read more
Filmed for the 25th anniversary of his death, this biography recounts the extraordinary life of famed Chilean singer-songwriter, theater director, folklorist, and political activist Victor Jara. With historical footage and interviews, the film describes the dramatic story of how Jara, the son of an illiterate peasant, came into international prominence and domestic martyrdom for his talent and his principles. Early on, he had a love of music inherited from his mother, a singer of traditional folk music. As a boy he migrated with her and his siblings to the slums of his country's capital. Upon her sudden death, he entered university, where he studied theater, met his future wife, and was swept up in the bohemian cultural renaissance that was burgeoning in Chile and that included such artists as singer Violeta Parra and poet Pablo Neruda.Aside from becoming an important Chilean theater director, he began investigating the traditional music he had grown up with and performing it with lyrics that reflected his growing sense of political outrage over the poverty and political oppression which afflicted his country. He eventually became one of the main proponents of Chilean "nueva canción" (New Song), which struggled through music and the arts to re-establish democracy in Chile. But his very prominence led to his ultimate detention, torture, and assassination by the dictatorship, chillingly recounted in the film. In many ways, Victor Jara's odyssey from the obscurity of the Chilean countryside to political martyrdom is a microcosm of Chilean history, which is evocatively depicted through historic and contemporary footage and interviews with friends, contemporaries, and his widow. Named for one of his most well-known songs, VICTOR JARA: THE RIGHT TO LIVE IN PEACE is a gripping narrative covering Jara's life from his early years to his heroic last hours. It is a moving tribute and testimony to a person of great vision and leadership, whose work helped unite a movement under a central goal: the right to live in peace. This product is manufactured on demand using DVD-R recordable media. Obsession and identity are recurring themes in screenwriter Charlie Kaufman's work, and he draws on them again in his directorial debut, SYNECDOCHE, NEW YORK. Kaufman's film focuses on the wiles of Caden Cotard (Philip Seymour Hoffman), a regional theater director who has won a MacArthur grant to help produce his next project. Cotard's artist wife, Adele Lack (Catherine Keener), subsequently departs with their daughter to Berlin, and he begins a flirtation with box office clerk Hazel (Samantha Morton). Much of the movie revolves around Cotard's ambitious next project, based around his life, which is being constructed in an enormous industrial space in New York City. As the years pass and the project is mired in endless rehearsals that replicate Cotard's existence, the tortured director obsesses over Adele, Hazel, his daughter, his health, and myriad other topics. The complex and often highly inventive narrative of SYNECDOCHE, NEW YORK is typical of Kaufman's screenplays for features such as BEING JOHN MALKOVICH and ADAPTATION. The film draws heavily on the kind of visual trickery that director Spike Jonze has often used in his adaptations of Kaufman's works, and features a strong performance from Hoffman as Cotard. Occasionally the film is abstract and surreal: Hazel lives in a house that is permanently on fire, while the actors Cotard casts in his play often blur the lines between fantasy and reality. Moviegoers will theorize about the true meaning behind Kaufman's feature: it offers no easy answers. SYNECDOCHE, NEW YORK is a film that requires as much work from its viewers as it does from the resolutely excellent cast that brought it to life, and as the film careers from hilarity to sadness in the blink of an eye, there's little doubt that this is another superlative entry in Kaufman's canon.

The Baa Baa Black Sheep season 1 DVD combines equal amounts of action and laughter to keep you entertained. Follow along in the path of a Marine Corps squadron and the adventures they undertake in the South Pacific. The Baa Baa Black Sheep DVD will be an instant classic and the perfect answer to a night in.In the Baa Baa Black Sheep season 1 DVD a likable mix of WWII action and light comedy the first 10 episodes of the NBC series Baa Baa Black Sheep (1976-78) wing their way onto DVD in this double-sided two-disc set. Based on the adventures of Marine Corps pilot Major Gregory 'Pappy' Boyington (played in the series by the always dependable Robert Conrad) and his squadron of roguish ace fliers in the South Pacific Theater Baa Baa Black Sheep benefited from an excellent cast (which included such TV and film vets as Simon Oakland and Dana Elcar as well as up-and-comers like John Larroquette and Larry Manetti of Magnum P.I.) and scripts from series creator Stephen J. Cannell (as well as long-time TV scribes like Philip De Guere and Milt Rosen) that offered a enjoyable balance of humor and combat. In the Baa Baa Black Sheep DVD the blend gets an excellent showcase in the 1976 two-hour pilot Flying Misfits which kicks off volume 1; the remaining 10 adventures pit Pappy and the Black Sheep boys against the Axis Japanese in a secret squadron of captured planes ('The Meatball Circus ' episode 8) a brainwashed American captain ('Presumed Dead ' episode 7) and a tough major (Charles Napier) with designs on commanding the squadron ('Best Three out of Five ' episode 3). Baa Baa Black Sheep series DVD fans may question the decision to include only half of the first season's episodes in this set (the 1976-77 season ran for an additional 12 episodes before being dropped by NBC; the series was revived in late 1977 rechristened Black Sheep Squadron and ran for an additional 13 episodes before being canceled in 1978) but the inclusion of the two-part pilot and interviews with the real Pappy Boyington (who served as the show's consultant and even cameos in the pilot) should appease any concerns.Shop for Baa Baa Black Sheep season 1 DVD for a series that is gripping and comical at the same time.

Director Mike Leigh's high-minded telling of the story of legendary musical team Gilbert Sullivan is one of the director's most thorough, highly ambitious efforts. Concentrating mainly on the tumultuous period just before the conception and production of the pair's THE MIKADO (first staged in 1885), Leigh's film rings true with an authenticity that transports the audience back to Victorian England with remarkable ease. Leigh, who comes from an extensive theater background, researched this period in English history exhaustively, from etiquette to the costumes to the production numbers. Both Jim Broadbent (as the negative-minded William Schwenk Gilbert) and Allan Corduner (as the "genius," Arthur Sullivan) deliver impassioned, entirely believable performances, as do the supporting players particularly Kevin McKidd, Lesley Manville, and Leigh regular Timothy Spall. Notably different from the director's previous brutally realistic, modern day examinations (such as NAKED and SECRETS AND LIES), Leigh's film bears genuine affection for the work of Gilbert Sullivan, which shines through in every frame. Successfully blending comedy, music, historical drama, and human emotion, TOPSY-TURVY proves that Leigh is not just a brilliant chronicler of modern class conflicts in England; he is a thorough, sensitive filmmaker with a tight grasp on the human condition.

AQUA TEEN HUNGER FORCE is a cult favorite on the Cartoon Network's late-night animation segment Adult Swim. The show hits the big screen with the strangely titled AQUA TEEN HUNGER FORCE COLON MOVIE FILM FOR THEATERS and the plot is as convoluted and nonsensical as the title. Bored and in hopes of attracting women Meatwad and Master Shake assemble their second-hand workout machine the "Insane-o-flex." Frylock steps in to help and discovers it's missing a crucial part--the power chip. They recover the chip and upon installation launch the machine into its real purpose as a killer robot. This film will be a must-see for hardcore fans of AQUA TEEN HUNGER FORCE as several of the sub-characters from the series appear in the film. These include the Mooninites the Plutonians MC Pee Pants and Cybernetic Ghost of Christmas Past from the Future. The traits of the three main characters symbolize Freud's three-part structural theory of the psyche: the Ego Super-ego and Id--and the concept works as both a feature-length film and as a fun absurd 15-minute cartoon.

Rebecca (1940) Laurence Olivier, Joan FontaineDirector: Alfred HitchcockCo-stars: George Sanders, Judith Anderson, Reginald Denny, Gladys Cooper130 minutes, Black and WhiteDVD: Region 1A landmark: Hitchcock's Oscar, his first Hollywood film and his second Daphne du Maurier adaptation in a row (JAMAICA INN preceded). REBECCA is women's gothic melo-romance, but Hitchcock makes it a film about his distrust and dislike for women. He must have enjoyed a private chuckle over the women he knew would flood theaters to see it.Fontaine stars as the unnamed narrator and shy, young, second wife of the urbane and handsome Maxim de Winter (Olivier). They meet and fall in love while vacationing on the Riviera. Following their quick marriage, they return to Maxim's vast English estate, Manderley. His wife is introduced to an army of servants who immediately, though subtly, display hostility toward her, as they all adored Rebecca, Maxim's first wife, whose death is shrouded in secrecy. As the servants become more hostile, the second wife grows more fearful, until she finally learns what happened to Rebecca. REBECCA was a prestige project for producer David O. Selznick, who was still coming down off the high of GONE WITH THE WIND. As with that 1939 classic, Selznick surrounded REBECCA with publicity including a massive talent hunt for this film's leads. Loretta Young, Margaret Sullavan, Olivia de Havilland, Vivien Leigh (Olivier's intended bride and GONE WITH THE WIND star), and Anne Baxter were all mentioned, but it was the 22-year-old Fontaine who was ultimately selected for the part.Depending on your own feelings, you will find Fontaine either endearing or totally maddening. Whichever, she's right in the part; and Hitchcock's relentless camera seems to luxuriate in her emotional masochism. The supporting roles are rendered quite well indeed. Anderson, Sanders, and Florence Bates all reveled in nasty roles; they look delighted sharpening their talons on Fontaine's little brown wren.

Martin Scorsese's intense film, a hallmark of 1970s filmmaking, graphically depicts the tragic consequences of urban alienation when a New York City taxi driver goes on a murderous rampage against the pitiable denizens inhabiting the city's underbelly. For psychotic, pistol-packing Vietnam vet Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro), New York City seems like a circle of hell. Driving his cab each night through the bleak Manhattan streets, Bickle observes with fanatical loathing the sleazy lowlifes who comprise most of his fares. By day he haunts the porno theaters of 42nd Street, taking his cues from the violent vision of life portrayed in these movies. As badly as Travis wants to connect with the people around him including Betsy (Cybill Shepherd), a lovely blonde campaign worker, and Iris (Jodie Foster), a prepubescent prostitute he tries to save his attempts are thwarted and his pent-up rage grows, turning him into a Mohawk-wearing walking time bomb. Scorcese fills Paul Schrader's screenplay with a tragic realism, brilliantly capturing the muck and grime of New York City. De Niro, playing the fragile hero, steps so deep inside his role that the results are deeply frightening. Bernard Herrmann's haunting score which turned out to be his last completes the urban nightmare.
