"How is it that something as unconscious as the matter of the brain ever gives rise to something as immaterial as an experience?" muses Peter Russell in From Science to God, a stimulating program exploring science, spirit, and the mystery of consciousness. Russell, a prominent thinker in the fields of consciousness and science, asserts that science cannot explain the fact that humans are conscious. This capacity for inner experience he calls "the great mystery." According to Russell, who studied mathematics and theoretical physics before he delved into experimental psychology, science is locked into the view that consciousness itself is somehow created by the human brain. He believes that we need to question this basic assumption and consider instead that awareness is present to some degree in all living things. The difference with humans is that we are aware that we aware. But what is it that is aware? In bustling downtown Los Angeles, Peter explores the perennial question of "Who am I?" He looks at how we seek fame and fashion, power and position, in our search for inner fulfillment. But in the final analysis, peace of mind is to be found within our selves rather than in what we have or do.In the closing, he observes that Western science has proved very successful in explaining the world and advancing technology, but has not provided us with meaning or values. He calls for integration of scientific understanding with the wisdom of spiritual traditions. "The next great frontier is not outer space," Russell concludes, "it’s inner space." A simple cloak pin from the ninth century was was instrumental in identifying what has become one of the world's major archaelogical sites. This film is the story of the search for, and the discovery and authentication of the only known Norse settlement in North America. In 1926, a Norwegian attorney by the name of Helge Ingstad abandoned his practice in order to explore the Arctic. Years later, he became fascinated by the search for Vinland. For over two centuries, scholars had speculated about the existence and location of the mysterious "Vinland the Good," described by Adam of Bremen in 1070 as an island where "wild grapes grow, but beyond, everything is filled with intolerable ice and terrible fog." Dr. Ingstad was sure of Vinland's existence, but he had few clues to follow: an ancient map from 1590 and the Icelandic sagas written in the 12th and 13th centuries. In 1960, the Ingstads went to L'Anse aux Meadows, an isolated community located on the northern tip of Newfoundland, where he had previously been shown strange grass-covered mounds suggesting human habitation. During seven summers, the Ingstads, with the help of other archaelogists, slowly excavated the site at L'Anse aux Meadows. They discovered turf-walled houses with ancient fireplaces, an iron furnace, boat nails, and other artifacts of Norse design. Dr. Ingstad's film footage of the digs provides visual evidence in addition to the Ingstad's explanations of how the early Norsemen lived and survived. Dr. Anne Stine Ingstad muses on the terrible solitutde that must have affected the people who occupied this tiny community.

Our long cultural nightmare is over. At last, two of the most beloved and most requested episodes of the comedy phenomenon that is Mystery Science Theater 3000 are preserved on DVD. Mighty Jack and Time of the Apes were born in Japan as innocent TV series, disfigured into TV movies for American audiences, then re-purposed as fodder for glorious new entertainments. And unless you are allergic to funny, The Violent Years and The Brute Man are nothing to sneeze at either. Here, for your viewing pleasure, are four films that would never have existed if cinema had any kind of immune system. Riffing on them with extreme prejudice are Joel, Mike and their robot pals Tom Servo and Crow T. Robot. Laugh amongst yourselves.

How do you measure the size of a black hole? The motion of individual particles at the subatomic level? The possible shape of space-time itself? In short: How do you mathematically describe the world around you? The answer lies in the use of geometry and topology to study and understand the shape of nature, whether leaf formations, DNA entanglements, or quantum fields. Mysterious, complex, and undeniably captivating, the study of the shape of nature lies at the forefront of current research in both mathematics and science. What's more: It's provided us with previously unimaginable scientific and technological advances, including our ability to read genetic data to better determine the relationships between species; closely study how proteins are built through the intricate process of folding; model and predict wind currents around the globe; map the seemingly random terrain of vast mountain ranges; develop facial recognition software for cameras and high-level security systems; and design and improve the way that robots move and behave. While the mathematics involved in the study of shapes and nature is important to how we grasp and live in the world, it remains a mystery to many of us. But these concepts and ideas are not inaccessible. This visually stunning course is your authoritative guide to the mathematical shapes around us: how they're formed, how they're studied, and how they're applied to our everyday lives. In 36 lectures, you'll discover the relationship between mathematics and nature, get a pointed introduction to the language mathematicians use to study shapes and dimensions, and learn how to finally make sense of this abstract-yet undeniably intriguing-subject. Professor Satyan L. Devadoss of Williams College, is a dynamic instructor with a contagious passion for the worlds of geometry and topology. His clear and engaging presentation style, accompanied with animations and graphics, will make your journey into the world of shapes unforgettable.

ewton’s Third Law of Motion states that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. Sure, there’s math to back that up, but the far more compelling proof is in the treatment accorded Manos The Hands Of Fate by those physicists of comedy at Mystery Science Theater 3000. Consider this legendary low point in film history, which depicts a family that gets lost en route to a vacation and stumbles into the lair of a cult. Since SoL captive Joel Robinson and his robot sidekicks Tom Servo and Crow T. Robot react to movies, it follows that this particular episode must be a glorious high point in MST3K history. This 2-DVD set celebrates a special film and the special TV show that made the film even more special. That’s why we’re calling this a special edition.

According to the influential Los Angeles artist Mike Kelley, quoted in The New York Times Magazine, "many of Raymond Pettibon's earliest supporters were artists. Some people liked Raymond because they considered him a guy who didn't kiss the butt of the art world. Others thought he represented punk, or blue-collar Conceptualism or D.I.Y. What interested me about him was how he constructed things--like Lautreamont, who's my favorite writer--with all these different sources juggled and combined into something particular. Raymond had that definite auteur look, which was faux-romantic, faux-Gothic, very Tennessee Williams, very foppishly funny."Best-known for his iconic album covers and zine-style ink drawings featuring surfers, old-time baseball players, gangsters, religious nuts, trains, Gumby and the character Vavoom from the old Felix the Cat cartoon, Pettibon is also the author of a series of super-low-fi home videos, made with his friends beginning in the 1980s. Starring the very artists and musicians who supported Pettibon from the start, they are available here for the first time on DVD. Red Tide Rising: Venice and Mars (2001) is a 2-disk set that deals with the life of Jim Morrison. Sir Drone: A New Film About the New Beatles (1989-90) chronicles the trials and tribulations of two nascent punk rockers in late-70s Los Angeles as they struggle to not be posers. Filmed over two days, it stars Mikes Watt and Mike Kelley. Citizen Tania: As Told to Raymond Pettibon (1989-90) deals with Patty Hearst and her Symbionese Liberation Army alias "Tania." Judgement Day Theater: The Book of Manson (1989-90) is an account of the famous Manson family. And The Whole World is Watching: Weatherman '69 (1989-90), starring Mike Watt, Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore, offers up sketches of historic encounters between the radical splinter group of the Students for a Democratic Society, Weatherman, and pop celebrities like Jane Fonda and John Lennon.

From the BBC a program about the Atom fundamental to studies in chemistry, physics and general science. The discovery that everything is made of atoms is the greatest scientific find ever. How the vast variety and richness of everything we see around us is built up and how it fits together comes down to atoms and the mysterious laws they obey. As scientists studied the atom they had to abandon everything they believed in and create a whole new science. A science that today underpins the whole of physics, chemistry, biology and maybe even life itself. This series chronicles how humanity solved the mystery of the atom. It is an inspiring and remarkable history. Series of 3 programs on 3 DVDs Programs in this Series: Clash of the Titans The first of three programs in which nuclear physicist, Professor Jim Al-Khalili, tells the story of the greatest scientific discovery ever - the discovery that everything is made of atoms. As scientists studied the atom they had to abandon everything they believed in and create a whole new science. A science that today underpins the whole of physics, chemistry, biology and maybe even life itself. Atom tells a story of great geniuses, people like Albert Einstein and Werner Heisenberg who were driven by their thirst for knowledge and glory. It is a story of false starts and conflicts, ambition and revelation, a story which leads us through some of the most exciting and exhilarating ideas ever conceived by the human race. Key to the Cosmos This is the second of Professor Jim Al-Khalili's three part investigation into the basic building block of our universe - the atom. He shows that in our quest to understand the tiny atom, we unravelled the mystery of how the entire universe was created. It is a story with dramatic twists and turns, taking in world-changing discoveries like radioactivity, The Atom Bomb and the Big Bang. All this forms part of an epic narrative in which the greatest brains of the 20th century competed to answer the biggest questions of all - why are we here and how were we made? Illusion of Reality The last of Professor Jim Al-Khalili's three part series in which he tells the story of the greatest scientific discovery ever - the discovery that everything is made of atoms. In this film he explores how studying the atom forced us to rethink the nature of reality itself. He encounters ideas that seem like they are from science fiction but in fact are a central part of modern science. He discovers there might be parallel universes in which different versions of us exist and finds out that empty space is not empty at all, but seething with activity. The world we think we know, the solid, re-assuring world of our senses, turns out to be a tiny sliver of an infinitely weirder and more wonderful universe than we had ever conceived of in our wildest fantasies. Features: Closed Captioned Spanish Subtitles Educator's Guide --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mayan Mysteries: Enlightened Commentary from the Heart of the Yucatan by Drunvalo Melchizedek Explore the mysterious disappearance of the Maya, energy grids, the rapid evolutionary cycle we are living through, keys to awakening our cellular memory, and the new rise of Father Sun. The Melchizedeks come down to us from a lineage of Earth Guardians that goes back to the most ancient civilizations. Drunvalo Melchizedek is one of these living among us. He teaches the most simple, yet profound, practices that guide our energies toward spreading love and compassion in the world. He reveals the answers to mysteries that befuddle the mind of ordinary people and scientists alike. For instance, where did the Maya go when they disappeared hundreds of years ago? Drunvalo's answer: they're still here they simply stepped into another dimension. He points out that whenour cellular memory awakens, we will recover the powers we once had (such as telepathic powers.) Certainly, the rapid evolution now taking place is transporting us into a world fairly beyond imagining. Drunvalo pays tribute to Mayan Elder Hunbatz Men and all the Maya for the role they continue to have bringing humanity into closer harmony with the cosmos. This exciting video by noted filmmaker Baird Bryant, was recorded live during ceremonial reactivation of the sacred Mayan sites by Hunbatz Men during the spring equinox in the Yucatan region of Mexico. The mystery of the Vitruvian Man is the first ever documentary to focus on one of Leonardo da Vinci's masterpiece. This drawing dated back in 1490 circa has baffled many scholars for years. Why did he draw it? What does it represent? Why 500 years later the Vitruvian man is still a powerful symbol in our era? This documentary features for the first time exclusive interviews with various experts about Leonardo. One and for all, prof. Carlo Pedretti, who is considered the top expert about Leonardo's life and who has devoted the past 70 years to study Leonardo and his art. The original drawing has been kept for the last century in a vault in Venice, at the Gallerie dell'Accademia and it's never shown to the general public. So this is a rare chance to admire the real drawing, not just a picture.. To add more, the DVD features two extra clips which explore the connection between Leonardo and our modern science and an exclusive clip about a one-time exhibition of the original drawing which was held in Venice from october 2009 to January 2010.
