Much like the country that spawned it, Mystery Science Theater 3000 is a melting pot. In every imaginable genre, Joel, Mike and their robot pals Tom Servo and Crow T. Robot have seen the promise of cinema mutilated by mediocrity. Nowhere is this highfalutin concept more hilariously exemplified than in this 23rd collection of episodes from the beloved cult comedy television series. You want a Western? It’s here. Space adventure? Look no further. We’ll even throw in a failed TV pilot and a barely coherent science fiction-horror-thriller. All genres are treated with equal disrespect by the luckless crew of the Satellite of Love. They pledge allegiance only to funny, with justice (SoL style) for all. Titles Include: King Dinosaur The Castle Of Fu Manchu Code Name: Diamond Head Last Of The Wild Horses

The low-budget wonder MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000 launched in 1988 with a simple premise: one man--series creator Joel Hodgson--is forced (as part of an evil scientists experiment) to watch the cheesiest movies ever made. Marooned in space with only his makeshift robot pals, Joel gets through the terrible flicks by making a mockery of them; during the shows 11-year run, his brand of peanut-gallery commentary became a comic art form unto itself. "How is it that something as unconscious as the matter of the brain ever gives rise to something as immaterial as an experience?" muses Peter Russell in From Science to God, a stimulating program exploring science, spirit, and the mystery of consciousness. Russell, a prominent thinker in the fields of consciousness and science, asserts that science cannot explain the fact that humans are conscious. This capacity for inner experience he calls "the great mystery." According to Russell, who studied mathematics and theoretical physics before he delved into experimental psychology, science is locked into the view that consciousness itself is somehow created by the human brain. He believes that we need to question this basic assumption and consider instead that awareness is present to some degree in all living things. The difference with humans is that we are aware that we aware. But what is it that is aware? In bustling downtown Los Angeles, Peter explores the perennial question of "Who am I?" He looks at how we seek fame and fashion, power and position, in our search for inner fulfillment. But in the final analysis, peace of mind is to be found within our selves rather than in what we have or do.In the closing, he observes that Western science has proved very successful in explaining the world and advancing technology, but has not provided us with meaning or values. He calls for integration of scientific understanding with the wisdom of spiritual traditions. "The next great frontier is not outer space," Russell concludes, "it’s inner space." ewton’s Third Law of Motion states that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. Sure, there’s math to back that up, but the far more compelling proof is in the treatment accorded Manos The Hands Of Fate by those physicists of comedy at Mystery Science Theater 3000. Consider this legendary low point in film history, which depicts a family that gets lost en route to a vacation and stumbles into the lair of a cult. Since SoL captive Joel Robinson and his robot sidekicks Tom Servo and Crow T. Robot react to movies, it follows that this particular episode must be a glorious high point in MST3K history. This 2-DVD set celebrates a special film and the special TV show that made the film even more special. That’s why we’re calling this a special edition.

The Touch Of Satan gets a touch of the divine when Mike and the 'bots react in real time to this twisted tale of love, walnuts, wassail and witchcraft. A young man on his way westward makes a stop at an isolated farmhouse, where he meets and falls for - you guessed it - the farmer's daughter. What she is soon revealed to be, however, is no joke. Of course, that doesn't stop our hapless heroes aboard the SoL from turning this devilish drama into, oh, two thousand jokes. Meanwhile, with Pearl away, Professor Bobo and Brain Guy are none too pleased to be babysat by pretty but infantilizing Steffi (a welcome appearance by MST3K crewmember Beth "Beez" McKeever).

Shorts, shorts, and more shorts. Not those shorts, we're talking about the short films your teachers used to make you watch on those days when they hit it too hard the night before and neglected to prepare anything for class. Only this time Mike, Kevin and Bill from Mystery Science Theater 3000 and Rifftrax.com are there to exact revenge with their signature brand of hilarious running commentary. Yes, from the authoritarian 40's right up through the do-whatever-you-want 70's they were there, lecturing, hectoring, and always, always yelling at you, insisting you practice proper hygiene. Includes ten complete shorts, including a loving, if paranoid, tribute to beer, the strange and mock-able antics of the Self-Conscious Guy, and a surprisingly balanced look at heroin use in The Terrible Truth. Wheel in the A/V cart, close the shades, turn off the lights and laugh along with master riffers Mike, Kevin and Bill. It's like spending an evening with your funniest friends!

A simple cloak pin from the ninth century was was instrumental in identifying what has become one of the world's major archaelogical sites. This film is the story of the search for, and the discovery and authentication of the only known Norse settlement in North America. In 1926, a Norwegian attorney by the name of Helge Ingstad abandoned his practice in order to explore the Arctic. Years later, he became fascinated by the search for Vinland. For over two centuries, scholars had speculated about the existence and location of the mysterious "Vinland the Good," described by Adam of Bremen in 1070 as an island where "wild grapes grow, but beyond, everything is filled with intolerable ice and terrible fog." Dr. Ingstad was sure of Vinland's existence, but he had few clues to follow: an ancient map from 1590 and the Icelandic sagas written in the 12th and 13th centuries. In 1960, the Ingstads went to L'Anse aux Meadows, an isolated community located on the northern tip of Newfoundland, where he had previously been shown strange grass-covered mounds suggesting human habitation. During seven summers, the Ingstads, with the help of other archaelogists, slowly excavated the site at L'Anse aux Meadows. They discovered turf-walled houses with ancient fireplaces, an iron furnace, boat nails, and other artifacts of Norse design. Dr. Ingstad's film footage of the digs provides visual evidence in addition to the Ingstad's explanations of how the early Norsemen lived and survived. Dr. Anne Stine Ingstad muses on the terrible solitutde that must have affected the people who occupied this tiny community.

Horror! Romance! Spine-tingling suspense! Carnival of Souls will make you long to be watching a movie that contains any of these things! In fact, you'd probably settle for a movie that contains a discernible plot. Instead you get lead actress Candace Hilligoss, notable for having one eyebrow that is consistently raised higher than the other. Along her journey to Utah (most of which is shown in real time) she meets colorful characters such as "The greasy guy in the boarding house" and "The priest who disapproves of her organ playing." - Carnival of Souls is grim, unsettling and contains 150% of your daily recommended dose of organ music. Therefore, it is like putty in the hands of master riffers Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett of RiffTrax.com and Mystery Science Theater 3000. Watch as they shape this filmic atrocity into a hilarious lump of comedy, which, from the right angle, kind of resembles an ashtray. Happy Father's Day!
