Long ago, Spanish explorers searched Florida in vain, hoping to find the Fountain of Eternal Youth. What they found instead was a treasure for our times - springs, rising clear and pure from the ground. These warm springs support a complex community of human and animal life above and below the surface of the waters, even reaching out into the sea, where the boundaries between salt and fresh water merge, creating natural gateways for wildlife. Advances in dive technology are only now allowing intrepid divers to explore the lightless, airless networks of underground caves formed by the springs. The risks are great -dozens of divers have lost their lives in the deadly mazes. Still, the magic of the place is powerful; life forms entirely new to science await. Here, clouds of bacteria take the place of light to support the chain of life, and blind crayfish live for more than a hundred years, twenty times longer than their surface cousins. Perhaps the fountain of youth is to be found here after all.

When a suburban housewife, Eliza (Hope Davis), discovers a love letter in her husband's pocket, it starts a wild, quirky, and ultimately poignant journey through the strained relationships of her entire dysfunctional family. Thinking it must be some misunderstanding, she brings the letter to her unbearably dominating mother (Anne Meara), who freaks and piles her passive husband (Pat McNamara), Eliza's promiscuous sister (Parker Posey), and her philosophical fiancé (Liev Schreiber) into a station wagon and heads off to New York City for an explanation. First-time writer/director Gregg Mottola changes the road movie's typically vast and open landscape to a claustrophobic, bustling urban setting but still uses it as a way to force out unspoken emotional turmoil between all three of the couples. His dialogue is often sharp and perceptive, and while the situations often contain huge laughs, an undercurrent of pain lurks just beneath the humor. The indie film uses conversations instead of plot to drive its action, and therefore needs engaging performances to succeed. With the exception of the one-note Posey, it gets them: Davis and Schreiber both play pathos and humor beautifully, and Stanley Tucci's cameo as the suspect husband--and the heartbreaking rooftop dance he performs--provides a surprising and ambiguous conclusion. --Dave McCoy

This 4-disc set is from Rob Hope a former Mr Natural Universe. Rob used a simple system (which is probably unlike anything you've ever seen before) to propel himself to being a completely NATURAL 'Mr. Universe'...a simple system that's gotten him the body of his dreams, exploding his muscle size and 'bulk'... all whilst retaining that incredibly 'ripped' look with very low body fat. Rob is HUGE...with extremely low body fat and he does NOT take steroids And Rob Hope has done all this without the usual 'gimmicky' approach that most body-builders advocate and without spending a fortune on expensive, over-priced supplements that don't really work (YES - Rob advises you to keep your wallet in your pocket for the most part!) and most amazing of all...he's done it whilst spending just 4-6 hours per WEEK in the gym! In fact, the secret lies in how Rob has cleverly combined two separate disciplines, fusing and synthesising them into a system that has propelled his muscle gains and put him at the very top of the body-building tree. The secret lies in the fact that Rob has background as a Power-Lifter. And it's how he's combined his power-lifting background and workouts with more traditional 'professional body-building' to create an explosive approach towards muscle gain and fat loss. It's this fused, composite approach of traditional 'professional' body-building, coupled with real-world power-lifting (which very few 'body-builders' TRULY know anything about) that can help turn YOU into a muscular, ripped, and chiselled 'muscle man'.

A young girl carries within her the genes of an alien race and hopes to get a human woman to give birth to a boy she can mate with - but "The Visitor" comes to Earth to prevent the union from occuring. "The Visitor" is an enjoyable 70s flick and somewhat of an Omen ripoff. It is a true piece of camp, and quite entertaining. A highlight is one of Shelly Winters' over-the-top performances as a housekeeper with an attitude. The soundtrack is fittingly bizzare. The "evil" child in this case is a precocious adolescent teen enjoys gymnastics and iceskating and of course, excels at both. A must for your video collection.

"No other country did as much to help the refugees as Portugal." For the thousands of refugees who fled Nazi Germany but wanted to remain in Europe, many found asylum in Portugal. When France capitulated in the summer of 1940, Lisbon became a harbor of hope for many who were trying to find safety overseas. This capital city of a small, impoverished nation was a transit station for many Jewish refugees, including such prominent figures as Heinrich Mann, Franz Werfel, and Alfred Polgar. Portugal was neutral during the Second World War and guaranteed a thirty-day stopover for the hunted exiles who had to make their way through the country on route to America. The city became a thru-station for thousands supported by relief committees, which provided shelter, food and overseas boat passage. But as the war intensified and less ships were able to sail, more and more people were "stranded" in Lisbon. Many of those who had to stay behind still reside in Portugal. In Lisbon: Harbour of Hope, the filmmakers bring the experiences of flight and survival to life once again, interviewing not only the survivors but those who helped the refugees. In present day Portugal, the refugees reminisce about the hardships they endured but also the kindnesses they received, most notably from the consul general who was dishonorably discharged for issuing visas. These men and women recount how they forged new lives for themselves in their adopted country. For many, Lisbon not only provided sanctuary, but the promise of new and fulfilling lives that they might not have enjoyed otherwise. For them Portugal became home and they regard Germany as a foreign country, like any other. In English, Portugese and German with English subtitles.

Slow-paced and subtle in presentation, The Twilight Samurai captures a side of the famed samurai that is rarely seen. Set in a northeastern province (Shonai) of late nineteenth century Japan, the film tells the story of Seibei Iguchi (Hiroyuki Sanada)--a low-ranking, debt-ridden samurai who, after losing his wife to consumption, struggles to care for his two young daughters and senile mother. Emphasizing the conflicts between duty and family, and love and class rank, director Yoji Yamada has created a film that is deeply engaging on several levels: a classic tale of honor, love, and courage. Winner of 12 Japanese Film Academy Awards, as well as an Academy Award Nominee for Best Foreign Language Film, The Twilight Samurailives up to its billing. But don’t expect an action-packed, samurai-fighting film, or you will be sadly disappointed (there are only two modest fight scenes). --Joel Berman

Presidential campaigns have inspired over two centuries of songs, marches, and topical tunes--each reflecting the hopes of the candidates, expressed in the musical style of their times. THE 1976 PRESIDENTIAL RETROSPECTIVE MUSICAL BRUNCH celebrates this American tradition--for song has figured in U.S. politics even prior to 1776 with "Yankee Doodle" to Teddy Roosevelt's favorite "A Hot Time in the Old Town Tonight", to Irving Berlin's "I Like Ike"--and so on and on... Brought to life again by Howard Da Silva, the legendary Broadway figure in many memorable musicals including Oklahoma!, Fiorello, and 1776, joined by performers Julian Patrick, Del Horstmann and William Elliott. Set in a Tammany Hall style urban clubhouse, the production presents a sheaf of authentic campaign songs re-discovered in the New-York Historical Society archives by Broadway actor-singer Michael Quinn. With a script by Gordon Hyatt linking the numbers come campaign songs ranging from "Jefferson & Liberty", to "Tilden & Reform" (from the "stolen" election of 1876) to "Get on the Raft with Taft" (dangerous idea, Mr. Taft weighed over 300 pounds), to "Wilson, That's All!" to "Row, Row, Row with Roosevelt." Here is Americana at its best, brought to life by a quartet of Broadway pros, singing and dancing Ward Heelers, backed by Abba Bogin's back-up musicians.

You certainly can't accuse this film of not covering its "erotic movie" bases. It starts out with an adolescent girl (Annie Belle) being picked up from her finishing school by her "father". There's some definite shades of "Lolita" here. But despite having been with this "father" since she was 13, she's still (technically) a virgin as their relationship is still(sort of) platonic--so throw in a little "Baby Doll" too. They then travel to Orient, which can not help but evoke the then-recent softcore porn hit "Emmanuelle" (Belle herself would later star in the real-life Emmanuelle Arsan's directorial debut "Laure" and would play the "White Emanuelle" to Laura Gemser's "Black Emanuelle" in one of the rip-off Italian films). In Hong Kong, her "father" gets arrested for currency smuggling, and she ends up in the clutches of some jaded libertines, much like in "Eugenie" (the producer of this film, Harry Allan Towers, had produced the Jess Franco's superior version of that erotic tale). Not that this story is entirely unoriginal--in an unusual plot twist the wife of one couple falls madly in love with the younger woman and has her husband seduce her while she listens on the phone (and has some very literal phone sex). And in the end, the young girl proves to be more independent-minded than all the aforementioned erotic heroines combined. The Italian director Massimo Dallamano had kind of taken over as director for eccentric producer Towers. Interestingly, Belle herself (who was barely 18 at the time) is credited with the story. Fortunately, she's also credited with taking her clothes off a lot and showing off her magnificent body, most memorably where she rides around Hong Kong butt-naked on the back of a motorbike (I guess they don't have helmet laws there). I was a little disappointed though that while she started off the movie with long brown hair, she quickly reverted to her usual bad bleach-blond pixie cut. This isn't great, but it's worth a look.

After 12 years of thinking about it (and waiting for movie technology to catch up with his visions), James Cameron followed up his unsinkable Titanic with Avatar, a sci-fi epic meant to trump all previous sci-fi epics. Set in the future on a distant planet, Avatar spins a simple little parable about greedy colonizers (that would be mankind) messing up the lush tribal world of Pandora. A paraplegic Marine named Jake (Sam Worthington) acts through a 9-foot-tall avatar that allows him to roam the planet and pass as one of the Na'vi, the blue-skinned, large-eyed native people who would very much like to live their peaceful lives without the interference of the visitors. Although he's supposed to be gathering intel for the badass general (Stephen Lang) who'd like to lay waste to the planet and its inhabitants, Jake naturally begins to take a liking to the Na'vi, especially the feisty Neytiri (Zoë Saldana, whose entire performance, recorded by Cameron's complicated motion-capture system, exists as a digitally rendered Na'vi). The movie uses state-of-the-art 3D technology to plunge the viewer deep into Cameron's crazy toy box of planetary ecosystems and high-tech machinery. Maybe it's the fact that Cameron seems torn between his two loves--awesome destructive gizmos and flower-power message mongering--that makes Avatar's pursuit of its point ultimately uncertain. That, and the fact that Cameron's dialogue continues to clunk badly. If you're won over by the movie's trippy new world, the characters will be forgivable as broad, useful archetypes rather than standard-issue stereotypes, and you might be able to overlook the unsurprising central plot. (The overextended "take that, Michael Bay" final battle sequences could tax even Cameron enthusiasts, however.) It doesn't measure up to the hype (what could?) yet Avatar frequently hits a giddy delirium all its own. The film itself is our Pandora, a sensation-saturated universe only the movies could create. --Robert Horton
