What started as a suggestion for Paul Simon to play a concert in New York's Central Park blossomed, on September 19, 1981, as a full-blown Simon and Garfunkel reunion after an 11-year hiatus, and now proves a priceless snapshot of two of America's greatest folk-rock performers. (It's also the rightful bookend to Simon and Garfunkel's acoustic Live from New York City, 1967.) Performed with a who's-who of East Coast session aces before a record-setting crowd of half a million fans, The Concert in Central Park finds its stars just shy of their 40th birthdays and very much in their primes, their voices sweet and pure and their playing relaxed, perfectly in tune and in synch. The show features a mix of S&G and solo Simon tunes, including all the songs that appear on the CD, with the addition of a reprise of "Late in the Evening" and the first live performance of Simon's "The Late Great Johnny Ace." This is classic material from start to finish, 87 minutes of unmitigated beauty. --Michael Mikesell

On July 21, 1983, the legendary Diana Ross took the stage in New York's Central Park before an audience of over 800,000. Soon after the show began, pouring rain and heavy wind threatened to put an end to the show, but Diana pushed on for much of the set, urging the drenched crowd to remain calm and stay with her. Eventually the torrential storm put an end to the performance, but not before Diana promised her fans she would return the next day. True to her word, Diana performed the entire concert again on July 22nd for the people of New York. Initially broadcast live around the world, this renowned concert remained largely unseen for 30 years, and has never been released on DVD until now. ... Read more
This 1995 outdoor concert captures Annie Lennox at the climax of her emergence as a solo performer, drawing from both her stunning, largely self-written 1992 debut album, Diva, and its immaculately crafted sequel, Medusa, devoted to gourmet cover performances. With Lennox in powerful voice, a solid live band attuned to the material's mix of pop, rock, and R&B accents, and an enraptured audience, Live in Central Park thus charms from opening downbeat to final coda, retaining Lennox's usual bracing mix of intelligence and drama. With her close-cropped, dark hair and bold tartan outfit, the erstwhile Eurythmic dials down the sharper edges and chillier mood of that band's most stylized work to focus on the haunted passions that bridge the Scot's solo and group efforts; her choice of songs from her old band's repertoire locks snugly into the spectrum of romantic obsession, heartbreak, and resignation that shape solo signatures like "Walking on Broken Glass," "No More 'I Love You's'," and "Little Bird." The concert footage is solidly shot and recorded, while the audio recording is crisp if not optimally mixed for 5.1 surround coverage, a fate neither surprising nor uncommon for a pre-DVD era production. Four promotional clips, produced for the Medusa project, largely offset such flaws, especially in light of her scant output since. --Sam Sutherland

Devotees of Neil Simon's repartee, such as in his Goodbye Girl and Brighton Beach Memoirs, will enjoy this earlier tale of domestic dispute between newlyweds. Corie (Jane Fonda) is the young housewife trying to keep life exciting while making a home for her and her husband, Paul (Robert Redford), on the fifth floor of a Greenwich Village walkup apartment. He's working hard at starting his career as lawyer; she's eager to be romantic and spontaneous; and the two have plenty to squabble about. The film suffers a bit from Corie's excessive perkiness and the odd lack of chemistry between the two actors. But those who find the dramatic conventions a bit stiff (some of the dialogue and action seems more suited for stage than screen) may still smile at the dated look (circa 1967) at home life. Mildred Natwick is superb as Corie's mother, and Charles Boyer milks his role as the elderly bohemian neighbor upstairs. --Jenny Brown
