One of the great masterpieces of world literature comes to vivid life in an elaborate production from acclaimed theater and film innovator Peter Brook (Marat/Sade, Lord of the Flies). This collection of ancient Sanskrit stories (composed into the longest book ever written) comprises a series of enlightened fables at the heart of countless beliefs, legends, and teachings; indeed, its very title means "the great story of mankind." Brook and award-winning writer Jean-Claude Carriere worked for eight years to develop this epic concerning two sides of a royal family, the Pandavas and the Kauravas, whose struggle leads to a fascinating voyage of emotions, contradictions, and dreams, filled with subplots which are alternately comic and tragic but always gloriously entertaining.

Peter Alsop's concert presentation for adults focuses on flexibility and commitment to self-growth. With hilarious and heartrending songs, he teaches the difference between "static" and "dynamic" lifestyles; why we should avoid "grabbing for simple answers", and how the "process-oriented" arts help us to relieve care-giver stress. His humor rekindles the child within, and opens doors locked by abuse, loss, anger and fear, as the audience laughs and cries and sings along. Includes his songs "Dear Mr. President," "Rabbit On My Shoulder," "Baby Needs a Parent," "Logical Lifeline," "My Body," and many more.

Columbo - The Complete First Season TV detective fans rejoice: Peter Falk's rumpled and infallible Lt. Columbo joins the DVD precinct with a five-disc set that features the detective's first nine appearances for NBC. Though Falk as Columbo (no first name) made his TV debut in 1967, the detective had actually first appeared on an episode of the 1960-61 Chevy Mystery Show (Bert Freed played the role) written by veteran TV scribes Richard Levinson and William Link (The Fugitive, Alfred Hitchcock Presents). The pair turned the episode into a stage play titled Prescription: Murder, which was adapted into a TV movie in 1967 with Falk in the lead. NBC greenlit a two-hour Columbo pilot (Ransom for a Dead Man) in 1971, and the series was launched that fall as part of the NBC Sunday Mystery Movie, a rotating 90-minute program that alternated Columbo with episodes of MacMillan and Wife and McCloud (another Levinson/Link creation). Viewers were quickly won over by Falk's shrewd performance as he matched wits with a host of exceptional guest stars (including Gene Barry, Patrick McGoohan, and others), all of whom assumed that the disheveled detective would never figure out their "perfect crimes"; the popularity and quality of the original series allows Falk to continue to don the trenchcoat some 30 years later for occasional Columbo TV movies. All seven 90-minute episodes of the 1971-72 debut season are included here, along with Prescription: Murder and Ransom for a Dead Man; unfortunately, as the lieutenant himself would say, "Oh, just one more thing"--no extras are included in the set, but having these fine TV mysteries in one set should be reward enough for armchair sleuths. --Paul Gaita Columbo - The Complete Second Season Armchair sleuths, get out your trenchcoats: Universal has released the sophomore season (1972-73) of the classic detective series Columbo, starring Peter Falk as the sage but rumpled police lieutenant. As with the first season, there's plenty of star power in front of and behind the camera to abet Falk in these eight 90- and 120-minute episodes: John Cassavetes stars in the season premiere, Etude in Black, as a philandering symphony conductor, with Blythe Danner and Hollywood legend Myrna Loy in support; Oscar winner Ray Milland is a scheming orchid grower in The Greenhouse Jungle, co-starring Bradford Dillman and William Smith; Robert Culp and Dean Stockwell are a football team manager and owner, respectively, whose disagreements blossom into murder in The Most Crucial Game; and Jeanette Nolan offers stellar comic relief in Double Shock, which features Martin Landau as identical twins--one of whom has murdered their uncle. Performances by Richard Basehart, Laurence Harvey, Leonard Nimoy, Anne Francis, Anne Baxter, and Mel Ferrer also highlight the season; direction by small-screen stalwarts like Boris Sagal, Jeremy Paul Kagan, and Nicholas Colasanto ("Coach" on Cheers) and scripts by Stephen Bochco also bring quality and style to the proceedings. Sadly, no extras are available in this five-disc set, but the stellar image and sound quality (and lack of commercials) should appeal to series fans and newcomers alike. --Paul Gaita Columbo - The Complete Third Season Oh, just one more thing, mystery mavens--get ready to be mystified and entertained by the award-winning third season of Columbo, starring Peter Falk as the rumpled but unbeatable Lieutenant. Having taken home Emmys for outstanding limited drama and lead actor in its '71-'72 debut season, Columbo was again named best drama for its third season ('73-'74). The reason for the repeat success? The formula remained the same: intelligent, engaging scripts and direction, guest performances by top actors, and, of course, Falk at center stage as Columbo, the most unlikely of supersleuths, but unquestionably one of the sharpest (the role would later earn Falk three more Emmys between 1975 and 1990). The 10 episodes compiled in this two-disc set again feature top tal

The buildup to this historic concert film is nearly as exciting as the actual spectacle of the sole surviving Wailer working out on the stage of NYC's famous Madison Square Garden arena. By 1986, the year of this concert, both Bob Marley and Peter Tosh were gone, and Wailer had not been seen abroad in at least 10 years, reportedly because of a fear of flying. Very few artists can make their comeback in a venue of this size, but Wailer played to a packed house, and what a show it must have been. This video does get off to a laughably lame start, with Wailer appearing in a burst of smoke amidst other cheesy special effects, but there's nothing comical about the canon of songs from which he draws in the show proper. The viewer can't help but wonder at the serendipitous stroke of fate that brought Wailer, Marley, and Tosh together, because as this performance video proves (along with the many of Bob Marley and the few of Peter Tosh), each was a songwriter and performer of genius. Clad in flowing robes, a woven Rasta belt doing double duty here to hold a lion's head against his forehead, Bunny proves himself to be a living reggae treasure. His "Blackheart Man" is the music's defining hymn to the Rastaman's spiritual grace in the face of society's condemnation, and his "Dreamland" remains the most vivid expression extant of the Rastaman's vision of Zion. Backed by a full orchestra of Jamaica's finest musicians and accompanied by a full array of dancers (including B Boy break dancers!), Bunny's solo show has not been equaled since. --Elena Oumano

A good wizard finds his magical powers diminishing as this Rankin/Bass production based on the Peter Dickinson novel opens. His nemesis, the evil Ommadon (voiced by James Earl Jones at his deepest and scariest), swiftly takes advantage of the situation. Who will save the world? Why, none other than a young scientist-novelist-game inventor, named Peter Dickenson (mildly voiced by John Ritter), who is zapped from the future back into the time of dragons. Populating this Japanese-animation fantasy film are the titular fire-breathing dragons, the wizards, a knight, a maiden, some elves, and--in a feminist departure from tradition--a heroic bowwoman. The battles are fairly mild and most of the virtuous characters recover, making this a good choice for family viewing, as well as a staple for the fantasy fanatic's video library. --Kimberly Heinrichs

One of the original 12 apostles, Peter was present during many of the most important moments of Jesus' ministry. Peter walked on water at Jesus' bidding, denied knowing Jesus in the courtyard of the high priest, drew his sword when Jesus was arrested, and had the privilege of an individual post-resurrection appearance by Jesus. Believed to have been crucified, Peter is said to have asked to be crucified upside down because he didn't think himself worthy of dying the same way as Jesus.

Slow-paced and subtle in presentation, The Twilight Samurai captures a side of the famed samurai that is rarely seen. Set in a northeastern province (Shonai) of late nineteenth century Japan, the film tells the story of Seibei Iguchi (Hiroyuki Sanada)--a low-ranking, debt-ridden samurai who, after losing his wife to consumption, struggles to care for his two young daughters and senile mother. Emphasizing the conflicts between duty and family, and love and class rank, director Yoji Yamada has created a film that is deeply engaging on several levels: a classic tale of honor, love, and courage. Winner of 12 Japanese Film Academy Awards, as well as an Academy Award Nominee for Best Foreign Language Film, The Twilight Samurailives up to its billing. But don’t expect an action-packed, samurai-fighting film, or you will be sadly disappointed (there are only two modest fight scenes). --Joel Berman
