Rap star Eminem makes a strong movie debut in 8 Mile, an urban drama that makes a fairly standard plot fly through its gritty attention to detail. Jimmy Smith (Eminem), nicknamed B Rabbit, can't pull himself together to take the next step with his career--or with his life. Angry about his alcoholic mother (Kim Basinger) and worried about his little sister, Rabbit lets out his feelings with twisting, clever raps admired by his friends, who keep pushing him to enter a weekly rap face-off. But Rabbit resists--until he meets a girl (Brittany Murphy) who might offer him support and a little hope that his life could get better. Under the smart and ambitious direction of Curtis Hanson (L.A. Confidential, Wonder Boys) and ably supported by the excellent cast and the burnt-out environment of Detroit slums, Eminem reveals a surprising vulnerability that makes 8 Mile vivid and compelling. --Bret Fetzer

A rap version of "Saturday Night Fever." B-Rabbit, a wannabe rapper from the wrong side of Detroit's 8 Mile, has problems: he dumps his girlfriend when she tells him she's pregnant; to save money to make a demo tape, he moves into his alcoholic mom's trailer; his job's a dead end, and he's just choked at the local head-to-head rap contest. Things improve when he meets Alex - an aspiring model headed for New York - and a fast-talking pal promises to set up the demo. Then new setbacks: Alex isn't faithful, mom rejects him, rifts surface with his friends, and he's mugged by rivals. Everything hinges on the next rap showdown at the club. Can B-Rabbit pull truth out of his cap?

There is no more ringing title among World War II movies than Thirty Seconds over Tokyo, and the mission it celebrates was unquestionably historic: a 400-mile bombing raid to carry the war to Japan itself mere months after that nation's sneak attack on Pearl Harbor. Yet the film is less memorable than many WWII pictures with less exalted factual basis. At the time, critic James Agee eloquently defined both its virtues and limitations as "a big-studio, big-scale film, free of artistic pretension ... transformed by its not very imaginative but very dogged sincerity into something forceful, simple, and thoroughly sympathetic in spite of all its big-studio, big-scale habits." That remains true today, but perhaps the movie--and its unimpeachably noble, admirably life-sized characters--wouldn't seem so stuck in the amber of a bygone era if Mervyn LeRoy and company had pumped a little "artistic pretension" into it. Spencer Tracy--as James H. Doolittle, architect of the raid--rates the most towering screen credit, and he's superb. But his role's an extended cameo; the emotional core of the film is B-25 pilot Ted Lawson (Van Johnson) and his wife, Ellen (the glowing Phyllis Thaxter). Lawson's bestselling memoir (with Bob Considine) of his training for the secret mission, his group's launching from the aircraft carrier Hornet, and his crash landing and protracted ordeal in China--where he lost a leg--has been faithfully served. The film is long on homely detail and all-American decency (including a remarkably outspoken regret over the unavoidability of civilian casualties) but achieves its greatest impact in the raid itself. That sequence, in addition to boasting Oscar-winning special effects, is mostly shot in riveting silence. Brazilian import, has words in portuguese on the cover but the audio is in ENGLISH.

Season 1: The man. The myth. The driver. Doug Heffernan (Kevin James) is The King of Queens, but his wife Carrie (Leah Remini) really rules the roost. Doug is the ultimate guy’s guy, but he loves Carrie so much he’s willing to sacrifice his tricked-out rec room (plus his 70-inch TV) so that her father Arthur (Jerry Stiller) can move in, a decision he’s regretted ever since. Doug’s free time is split between quality time with his wife and play time with his buds. A parade of crazy neighbors and oddball citizens of New York’s middle-class borough help make this show the reigning comedy champ. The King of Queens proves you don’t have to have a huge castle to live like royalty. Season 2: The King is back! Funnier. Feistier. And more lovable then ever. Doug Heffernan (Kevin James) returns as the delivery guy with the whole package. Along with Carrie (Leah Remini) and his tenacious father-in-law Arthur (Jerry Stiller), Doug turns blue-collar humor into red-hot laughs. When he's not punching the clock, he's working overtime to be around everything he loves the most - his wife, his buddies and his big screen TV. No matter where trouble finds him, Doug faces it with a smile in his heart, and a pastrami sub on his plate. Season 3: It’s good to be King! Kevin James continues to deliver the laughs as parcel deliveryman Doug Heffernan in the third hysterical season of The King of Queens. In these 24 uproarious episodes, Doug, his loving wife Carrie (Leah Remini) and his royal pain of a father-in-law Arthur (Jerry Stiller) hold court over such regal issues as paintball parties, job strikes, expanding waistlines, cheating husbands and positive home-pregnancy tests. So join Doug and his noble entourage of family and friends in this crowning collection of sidesplitting comedy and laughter – uncut, unedited and commercial-free. Season 4: All hail The King of Queens - because he's funnier than ever. In this outrageous and unforgettable fourth season, parcel deliveryman Doug Heffernan (Kevin James) continues to juggle the intimate moments of marriage with his lovely wife Carrie (Leah Remini) while sparring with that royal pain in the basement - father-in-law Arthur (Jerry Stiller). With such hilarious mishaps as hoarding an airplane's oxygen mask and installing a hidden camera to spy on Arthur, you, too, will crown this hilarious hit-comedy king. Season 5: It's the fifth season of The King of Queens and the laughs are bigger than ever! Join Kevin James as Doug Heffernan, the down-to-earth deliveryman who's livin' life large, Leah Remini (Carrie), his spitfire wife, and Jerry Stiller (Arthur) as their wacky but loveable perennial houseguest. This season, Doug and Carrie's Valentine's Day plans get sidetracked by a gang of penguins, a real dogfight occurs when Arthur is forced to make room for a new puppy, Doug deals with Super Bowl anxiety, and Carrie's habits land her in a shopping intervention. Season 6: In season six, Doug (Kevin James) gets buff, Carrie (Leah Remini) gets jealous and Arthur (Jerry Stiller) gets even wackier, as the Heffernans keep on delivering the laughs in King of Queens. This season, Doug squares off against his junior high school arch enemy, while Carrie gets in touch with her inner 'couch potato' and Arthur runs away from home. You'll see all the regulars you love, plus stars like Judge Reinhold, Janeane Garofalo, and Jon Favreau in hilarious guest appearances. Anne Meara and Rachel Dratch are back to add to the fun. Season 7: The bases are loaded with laughs in the seventh season of The King of Queens. Doug and Carrie Heffernan continue their winning streak of comedy. Doug fakes cardiac arrest at Carrie's work event to cover up his inability to remember her co-workers' names. Carrie scores box seats to a Mets game, only to have Doug strike out with her boss. When Doug's parents come to town, Arthur (Jerry Stiller) is more than happy to entertain Doug's bored Mom. Arthur settles a decades old

In this third installment of his "Walk" series of Pacific Crest Trail documentaries, Scott "Squatch" Herriott does his biggest mile count yet in a single year ('06)...over 700+ spread out in Calif., Ore. & Washington. As a result, he runs into more hikers, trail angels & others who love the truly unique sub-culture of the PCT. With more music, more humor, and more on-trail scenery this time around, Squatch has made what may be his best film yet about one of the world's most geographically diverse long trails. As was the case with "Still Walking", we see how some of the hikers in the previous film(s) are doing now (e.g. Scott Williamson, Yogi, Nabor J). So not only does it stand alone as a great film about the long-distance hiking community, it's an awesome addition to his previous two films. You gotta have the Trilogy, dude!

Slow-paced and subtle in presentation, The Twilight Samurai captures a side of the famed samurai that is rarely seen. Set in a northeastern province (Shonai) of late nineteenth century Japan, the film tells the story of Seibei Iguchi (Hiroyuki Sanada)--a low-ranking, debt-ridden samurai who, after losing his wife to consumption, struggles to care for his two young daughters and senile mother. Emphasizing the conflicts between duty and family, and love and class rank, director Yoji Yamada has created a film that is deeply engaging on several levels: a classic tale of honor, love, and courage. Winner of 12 Japanese Film Academy Awards, as well as an Academy Award Nominee for Best Foreign Language Film, The Twilight Samurailives up to its billing. But don’t expect an action-packed, samurai-fighting film, or you will be sadly disappointed (there are only two modest fight scenes). --Joel Berman

Rise Against Another Station: Another Mile on DGC/Interscope Records. The DVD features performances of 14 songs recorded in locations throughout the world. These performances are interspersed with interviews with each band member of the Chicago based band revealing the creative process that goes into making a Rise Against song and the history of each individual band member. Another Station: Another Mile begins with a statement from the band: "Since we put together our last DVD (Generation Lost), the snowball that is Rise Against is still gathering size and speed. What you hold in your hands is the continuing story of our band, what it means to us, and what it means to people like you. At our request, all the live footage you see in the DVD is completely unedited; meaning we didn't go back and fix or re-do anything. We felt it should stand or fall on its own merit, and be embraced for what is, which is live music. Who knows, maybe we'll feel differently next year. But for now, the moments are captured raw as we make our way to another station: another mile." "The book was better" has been the complaint of many a reader since the invention of movies. Frank Darabont's second adaptation of a Stephen King prison drama (The Shawshank Redemption was the first) is a very faithful adaptation of King's serial novel. In the middle of the Depression, Paul Edgecomb (Tom Hanks) runs death row at Cold Mountain Penitentiary. Into this dreary world walks a mammoth prisoner, John Coffey (Michael Duncan) who, very slowly, reveals a special gift that will change the men working and dying (in the electric chair, masterfully and grippingly staged) on the mile . As with King's book, Darabont takes plenty of time to show us Edgecomb's world before delving into John Coffey's mystery. With Darabont's superior storytelling abilities, his touch for perfect casting, and a leisurely 188-minute running time, his movie brings to life nearly every character and scene from the novel. Darabont even improves the novel's two endings, creating a more emotionally satisfying experience. The running time may try patience, but those who want a story, as opposed to quick-fix entertainment, will be rewarded by this finely tailored tale. --Doug Thomas

You certainly can't accuse this film of not covering its "erotic movie" bases. It starts out with an adolescent girl (Annie Belle) being picked up from her finishing school by her "father". There's some definite shades of "Lolita" here. But despite having been with this "father" since she was 13, she's still (technically) a virgin as their relationship is still(sort of) platonic--so throw in a little "Baby Doll" too. They then travel to Orient, which can not help but evoke the then-recent softcore porn hit "Emmanuelle" (Belle herself would later star in the real-life Emmanuelle Arsan's directorial debut "Laure" and would play the "White Emanuelle" to Laura Gemser's "Black Emanuelle" in one of the rip-off Italian films). In Hong Kong, her "father" gets arrested for currency smuggling, and she ends up in the clutches of some jaded libertines, much like in "Eugenie" (the producer of this film, Harry Allan Towers, had produced the Jess Franco's superior version of that erotic tale). Not that this story is entirely unoriginal--in an unusual plot twist the wife of one couple falls madly in love with the younger woman and has her husband seduce her while she listens on the phone (and has some very literal phone sex). And in the end, the young girl proves to be more independent-minded than all the aforementioned erotic heroines combined. The Italian director Massimo Dallamano had kind of taken over as director for eccentric producer Towers. Interestingly, Belle herself (who was barely 18 at the time) is credited with the story. Fortunately, she's also credited with taking her clothes off a lot and showing off her magnificent body, most memorably where she rides around Hong Kong butt-naked on the back of a motorbike (I guess they don't have helmet laws there). I was a little disappointed though that while she started off the movie with long brown hair, she quickly reverted to her usual bad bleach-blond pixie cut. This isn't great, but it's worth a look.
