Hang Cool Teddy Bear, whose title was taken from a line in Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, is 13 tracks of classic Meat Loaf, primed and ready for the 21st century. More than four decades into his career, the man and his voice are as big, bold and relevant as ever. Meat Loaf s creativity was sparked by working with a new collaborator, producer Rob Cavallo (Green Day, My Chemical Romance, Paramore, Fleetwood Mac), a lifelong Meat Loaf fan who has worked with some of the most explosive names in rock music and who helped to foster a modern and contemporary vibe for the album. Of their relationship, Meat Loaf said, Rob is the number one rock producer in the world because he leaves his ego out of the equation and gives an artist his voice, making it sound better than the artist could even imagine. Thematically, like most Meat Loaf albums, Hang Cool Teddy Bear has a larger concept and was inspired by a short story written by Los Angeles screenwriter, director and longtime Meat Loaf friend Kilian Kerwin. It s the story of a soldier, revealed Meat Loaf. He s been in battle and he s lying face down on the ground. He can t move, but he turns his head and starts to see blood run across the ground, and so he thinks he s going to die. They always say you see your life flash backward when you re about to die. But his life flashes forward - into what possibly could happen. He sees what his life could be: the good and the bad. The songs are the different scenarios he finds himself in. It s not always the same time or the same place, but it s always the same woman. But I don t want to give too much away. I want people to work it out for themselves. Hang Cool Teddy Bear also features a stellar array of big-name guests, including Steve Vai (who appears on Love is Not Real ), former Queen guitarist Brian May (who appears on Song of Madness and Love is Not Real ), American Idol judge Kara DioGuardi (who co-wrote and sings on If I Can t Have You ) and Hollywood star Jack Black, who duets with Meat Loaf on Like a Rose . Honky poignantly illuminates the vulnerability of childhood complicated by the effect of race and class at the deepest human level. From Publishers Weekly I ve studied whiteness the way I would a foreign language, declares Conley at the outset of his affecting, challenging memoir, laced with the retrospective wisdom of the sociologist (at New York University) he has become. As the child of bohemian, white parents, he grew up in an otherwise black and Hispanic housing project on New York s Lower East Side. At elementary school in the 1970s, he found himself placed in the Chinese class, after his stint in the black class--where he was the only student not to receive corporal punishment--left him uncomfortable. Despite the family s lack of funds, they had cultural capital in the form of social connections, and were able to transfer young Dalton to a better school, where he began to feel some snobbery toward kids in his own neighborhood. Yet the friend who accepted Dalton most was a black youth from the neighborhood, Jerome, who was tragically disabled in a random act of violence that helped spur Conley s parents to leave the Lower East Side for subsidized housing for artists. Part of the memoir concerns the universality of poverty--but a thoughtful examination of the privileges of race and class also emerges. Despite the book s title, the author cites only one major episode in which he was threatened and called honky. Conley acknowledges that he doesn t know how to account for such successes as gaining admission into the selective Bronx High School of Science: race? parental protectiveness? his own aspirations? We d already completed the album but we dropped a song that we wrote to put this on our album. GARY This song just blew our hair back. Although we had already tracked everything, we learned we were still budgeted for a little more, so we tracked this the next day and it was stunning. Joe Don TO GOOD IS TRUE Jay DeMarcus, Danny Orton It took just a couple of hours to write that one. I m always a fan of uptempo tunes with great melodies and hooks, and I think we came up with a good one.-JAY As soon as I heard it I loved it. It is catchy, uptempo, and has a lot of energy. It was a no-brainer. JOE DON I MELT Gary Levox, Neil Thrasher, Wendell Mobley That was truly enjoyable to write. Neil and Wendell had the melody idea and a chorus idea, and they called me in and we finished it that day. It s a sexy tune. I think a lot of women would like to hear a man say they don t have to do anything special to make him melt. GARY Just a big old power ballad. It s one of my favorites on the record. If that song doesn t move you, then there s something wrong. JAY MAYBERRY Arlos Smith It hit us the first time we heard it. It s got chord progressions that are really different and unique. We kept that one on hold for a long time and it s one of my favorites on the record. JAY The banjo really stands out on this track. It tells a lot about life in 2002, how busy you can get being caught up in the rat race. It reminds me of my childhood and it s a really cool tune one of our favorites. GARY LOVE YOU OUT LOUD Brett James, Lonnie Wilson That was another one we got when the tracks were finished. It knocked us out. We just knew we had to cut it. It s Rascal Flatts to a T . It s energy, fun, all about being in love and what any man would want to do for his girl. JOE DON Lonnie s a great writer and a great friend, and he and Brett called and said, Man, we ve got a gift for you. They were right. Yeah, that s definitely us. GARY DRY COUNTRY GIRL - Marcus Hummon, Chuck Jones I was writing with Marcus last year and he said, Mind if I play you a song? He played it in my truck while we were on the way to lunch and I was blown away. The melody is so captivating. I played it for Jay and Gary and we loved it and put it on hold. It has a lot of energy and a good little story.--JOE DON The musicians that played on our album took this thing to another level. It really stood out. Plus, melodically, it s so cool. GARY LIKE I AM Joe Don Rooney, Danny Orton This is a very special song for me, since I wrote it after a conversation with my girlfriend Kassidy. For me, like a lot of men, when a women says great things about you it can be hard to believe. I thought, I don t see everything you se in me, but since you see it, I ll try to be that way. It was very easy to write, and as soon as I came up with the melody I shared the idea with Danny Orton and we wrote It. JOE DON I think you can tell Joe Don was influenced by those 80s power ballads. I think we knew we would all love it because we re all suckers for big sappy ballads, and that song just says it all. JAY YOU Brad Crisler, James LeBlanc We were tracking the 11th song for the album when I was going through some tapes and found one that had just been dropped off. I put the song You on in the headphones and said, Gosh, this is great! I played it for Marty and they thought it was great too. We called the publisher and the song was on hold for Tim McGraw, whose people said if he didn t cut it by 2 p.m. that day, we could have it. He didn t cut it and we tracked it that day. Recorded in Ireland, Amarantine is classic Enya and once again, the record is a product of the extraordinary and long-standing creative partnership Enya has enjoyed throughout her career with producer/arranger Nicky Ryan and lyricist Roma Ryan. From the soaring choruses of the title track to the exquisite nuances of Wild Violet based on a haiku by the Japanese poet Basho, everything you could want from an Enya record is here in abundance. Lyrically, however, you will find one or two innovations. In the past, Enya has sung lyrics written for her by Roma in Gaelic, Welsh, Latin and Spanish, as well as English. This time there is no Gaelic. But in addition to the song in Japanese, Enya sings three songs written in a customised language invented by Roma. The idea arose after she d written lyrics in Elvish when Enya was invited to sing the theme song for The Lord Of The Rings - The Fellowship Of The Ring soundtrack, at the personal request of director Peter Jackson. With more than 65 million album sales to date, Enya is one of the world s biggest selling artists. A Day Without Rain was released in 2000 and became her biggest selling album to date, staying on the Billboard album chart for over two years. In 2001 two of Enya s songs May It Be and An ron appeared in the film The Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring. Enya, Nicky and Roma were all nominated for an Oscar and a Golden Globe for May It Be.
