Developed by the team behind the critically acclaimed games MadWorld, Infinite Space, and Bayonetta, and directed by the creator of the Resident Evil series, Vanquish is a fast-paced 3D shooter set in a space station orbiting near-future Earth. With the world's resources dwindling rapidly, the United States sought to solve its energy woes by building a space station to harness solar power. But a nationalistic military group stages a successful coup in Russia, and subsequently attacks and captures the U.S. space station. The group, known as the Order of the Russia Star, then diverts the station's stored solar energy into a blast wave that demolishes San Francisco. With New York next to be destroyed, the United States springs into action, sending a team of space-based special operations forces and Marines to assist the few remaining soldiers aboard the station. Players join the rescue effort as Sam Gideon, a young researcher from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), who is officially on the team to test out the Agency's new Augmented Reaction Suit (ARS), but is also secretly tasked with tracking down the designer of the space station, Dr. Francis Candide. The ARS turns Gideon into something of a hybrid of Iron Man and RoboCop, with powerful armor, tremendous mobility due to jet thrusters on each of his arms and legs, massive firepower thanks to a system that can replicate any weapon he finds, and a special "AR" mode that allows for slow-motion attacks and evasion during periods of extreme duress. Players can store three weapons at a time, and the ARS also enhances Gideon's strength, allowing him to unleash deadly melee attacks at close range. He is not invincible, however, as the ARS can only boost for a short duration before it requires a cooling down period, so gamers are best advised to make use of Vanquish's sticky cover system during vulnerable moments. The game's environments were designed to be massive and interactive, with destructible elements, fights between background characters, and enough space for Gideon to comfortably boost, and Vanquish features a scoring mechanic engineered to dissuade over reliance on any one style of play by awarding multipliers for stringing together boosts, melee attacks, and slow-motion "AR" mode combat.

Players who journey through the Phantasy Star Universe, can find action as a single gamer in either an offline "Story" mode, as an individual adventurer online, or within a group by connecting to the Internet. Offline, gamers take the role of 17 year-old Ethan Waber, a young cadet in a human security group known as the Guardians. Ethan is thrust into war after an alien race known as the SEED attack a colony of humans and kidnap his sister in the process. To save his sister and eventually the entire Phantasy Star Universe, Ethan must travel through a variety of challenges while earning experience, upgrading his gear and attributes, and discovering hidden trinkets and treasures found throughout the game. Connecting to the Internet opens up three types of missions for single-player and group adventuring. Online universe users begin by creating their own character through a customization process complete with a variety of adjustable physical attributes. After avatar generation, a gamer receives a "bedroom" of sorts for storing items, selling merchandise, and crafting goods. All players then gather in a pre-mission lobby to select and attempt a quest to complete, either alone or with a group of friends. Mission points, items, and other goodies are awarded in all three adventures based on performance. There are three types of weapons with 200 variations and 20 categories found in Phantasy Star Universe, including melee, TECHNIC, and ranged combat options. TECHNIC is a type of magical combat executed with a wand or other magic casting weapons. Two items can be equipped at one time, and gamers can group their weapon sets according to each tool of destruction's strength and weakness. All three styles can be used, interchanged, and improved to battle over 200 diverse enemies found in the game.

EA Games makes an offer it hopes fans of Mafioso mythology cannot refuse, in this video game translation of the award-winning 1972 Francis Ford Coppola film. Players take the role of a small-time thug, newly inducted into the Corleone family and looking to make it big. By running missions for the family in the game's rendition of 1940s New York City, players can earn the respect of the family and be promoted to positions of power and influence in the organization. The game is designed to track the player's decisions and interactions throughout the criminal career, such that NPCs will remember how they were treated in the past and react appropriately in future dealings. In order to encourage players to truly take on the role of their own Corleone henchman, EA Games' The Godfather offers a "MobFace" custom character creator which allows for adjustment of physique, facial features, and attire. All other major characters featured in the game are voiced by the actors who played them in the movie, including Marlon Brando (posthumously) as Don Vito Corleone, James Caan as Sonny Corleone, and Robert Duvall as consigliore Tom Hagen. The Wii version of the game features a few upgrades in terms of environment and gameplay. Gamers direct the actions of their onscreen character with the Nunchuk and the Wii Remote; using a variety of hand gestures to accomplish such tasks as fighting back, strangling someone, using a shotgun, driving, and pushing people out of the way. Players now have a choice of professions, and they may walk the path of an Enforcer or direct from the shadows as an Operator. Each career comes with a unique skill tree where players can learn new abilities and gain greater control over character upgrades. As they journey through the game, players will find themselves in a variety of environments including rooftops, a shipyard, and a train station. Gamers may take over the transportation hubs to earn a little loot with the help of a paid police force or a Corleone hit squad. Additionally, players may wire cars with bombs and watch their enemies go up in a giant ball of fire.

Intended for mature players, Catherine is an unusual action-adventure game that involves the commitments of love, the compellations of lust, and the unsettling perils of a nightmarish alternate reality. The story centers on Vincent, a man in his prime who becomes torn between his desires for two different women. The game is played in two indirectly related settings. During the day, Vincent spends his time at the corner bar, an establishment called the "Stray Sheep," which seems to exist here in the "real" world. At night, however, when he falls asleep, Vincent visits a surreal realm populated by deadly traps, hideous monsters, and an imposing number of bipedal sheep, which are sometimes involved in solving some of the game's platform-climbing puzzles. Most of the action in the game takes place in the nightmare realm, where Vincent must build stairs by pushing and pulling large blocks, and climb to safety before time runs out. Sometimes, the hero must also defeat tricky boss characters in order to survive his night's sleep. While awake and at the bar, in the daytime mode of play, Vincent can send text messages to other characters. He can also order drinks that will later endow him with enhanced abilities, in the action-oriented nightmare setting. The game gauges Vincent's morality, based not on major plot points but on small decisions and dialog-tree selections he makes throughout the adventure. Players' choices in these matters affect the development and conclusion of the story. A troubling malady has beset Vincent's neighborhood. Healthy young men are dying in their sleep, discovered in the morning with anguished grimaces frozen on their faces. As these disturbing stories spread to the media, rumors begin to circulate, involving the hypothesis that when a person dreams of falling and does not wake up, he dies in his sleep. While sitting in the bar one day, contemplating marriage to his long-time girlfriend Katherine, Vincent meets a beautiful woman who has the same name but spells it differently Catherine. He is unable to resist his the instant passion he feels for her, and she seems eager to requite his affections. Once the two new acquaintances spend a dreamy evening together, however, Vincent's nightmares begin. Characters and settings are rendered in virtual 3D with an anime-inspired art style. Along with the main single-player adventure, same-screen two-player modes are available, with cooperative and competitive options. Catherine was developed by the Atlus team behind Japan's popular Shin Megami Tensei: Persona games, with visual design by Shigenori Soejima and music composed by Shoji Meguro.

The interactive adaptation of Tintin's computer-animated debut is an action-adventure game in true spirit, presenting players with a variety of platforming challenges as they proceed along a central storyline, based on the Steven Spielberg film. Players lead the ambitious young reporter to explore exotic locations around the world, overcoming perilous situations with clever thinking and agile button-presses. Captain Haddock, Snowy, and other characters can be unlocked, to play through parts of the story from their own perspectives, using their distinct strengths and special abilities. Much of the game is played like a 2D platformer, presented in polygonal 3D. Tintin must climb, dash, and make nimble leaps to find his way through each level. In both single-player and co-op modes, his companions lend a hand in puzzle solving, whenever Snowy may need to squeeze ahead through a tight gap, or Haddock may need to stay behind to hold down a gate trigger. Other escapades have the heroes driving, swimming, sword fighting, and piloting a plane. The player's point-of-view shifts as puzzle and action sequences are presented from conventional perspectives. Graphics are in the style of the movie.

The sequel to Yu Suzuki's 70 million-dollar cinematic adven
... Read more
The sequel to Yu Suzuki's 70 million-dollar cinematic adventure for Dreamcast makes its long-awaited U.S. debut as an Xbox exclusive. The story begins where the original game left off: Ryo Hazuki's relentless pursuit of the man who killed his father. As Hazuki's boat lands in the port of Aberdeen, Hong Kong, he once again must rely on basic detective work to gather leads, which involves interviewing local residents, exploring his surroundings, taking an odd job or two to raise some cash, and piecing together the clues needed to track down the elusive Lan Di. Unlike the first title, where combat represented an estimated ten percent of gameplay, Shenmue II increases the amount of fighting and frequency of Quick Time Events. Quick Time Events are scripted action sequences fueled by quickly pressing certain buttons at specific times in a manner similar to the original Dragon's Lair. Shenmue II also minimizes the waiting associated with the first game. Players are still free to explore during the day and at night, but they can also advance time to attend a meeting or enter a shop rather than wait around town. Throughout the game's four main regions (Aberdeen, Wan Chai, Kowloon, and Guilin), players have an opportunity to earn money in a variety of ways. Players can gamble on dice games or pachinko machines, engage in fighting or arm wrestling contests, sell trinkets at a pawnshop, or perform menial tasks like moving crates or books. This money can be used to purchase maps, toys, artwork, or for services such as a night at the local inn. As in the original, players can drop coins into authentic arcade games, including Out Run, Space Harrier, After Burner II, and Hang-On. Each area in Shenmue II is an estimated ten times larger than its predecessor's locales and features bustling crowds, changing weather, and potential threats in the form of thieves and gangs. Dynamically changing Chinese music accompanies Ryo as he moves from area to area, and each character can be spoken to as he or she communicates with animated facial expressions to help further the sense of realism. Among the areas players will visit are markets, parks, piers, wharfs, apartment complexes, gardens, warehouses, alleys, and a martial arts training ground. Progress can be saved at any time to the Xbox hard drive.

From a first-person shooter perspective, players travel through remote expanses of craggy foothills, pine forest, and snow-swept mountainside, to stalk towering moose and elk, sure-footed mountain rams, and more than a few big, angry bears. Cabela's Big Game Hunter 2012 sticks to the series' tradition of realistic hunting simulation in extreme outdoor conditions. Building upon intricacy of the virtual wildernesses in previous Cabela's games, Big Game Hunter 2012's environments offer the player more choices while posing new dangers. In some locations, virtual hunters can climb above the brush for a better shot, but risk being spotted themselves. Those who choose the low ground may be well concealed, but have poor visibility of their surroundings. Each of the animals is programmed with authentic behaviors, and observing their movements can yield clues to their mood and future actions. The wilderness is rife with natural hazards, so players must balance speed with safety when the trail leads through difficult terrain. The game's dynamic weather system also adds a realistic unpredictability. To even the odds, a wide selection of virtual firearms and Cabela's brand outdoor equipment is available, as virtual hunters gear up before each expedition. Rifle upgrades and special-use accessories can be purchased as players progress through the game. As with the previous year's Dangerous Hunts 2011, Big Game Hunter 2012 is specifically compatible with the Top Shot Elite rifle controller.

Released alongside the Paramount Pictures computer-animated film, Rango for PlayStation 3 is a mixed action-adventure game that puts players in the role of the imaginative lizard who decides to become a sheriff in the Wild West. Play involves platform-style environmental puzzles, driving sequences aboard a speedy roadrunner mount or flying bat, and gun-slinging shoot-outs, including special "golden bullet" challenges that reward precision and quick thinking. The action is set in and around the frontier town of Dirt, where a strong-willed farmer named Beans needs help restoring the water supply and rescuing her kidnapped father. Rango's missions play out in familiar places around the town, as well as in new locations inspired by the film. The local rodent outlaws pose plenty of adversity for the greenhorn lizard, but some missions feature more fantastical opponents, such as zombies or extraterrestrial aliens. Brutally poor sportsmanship and fantasy combat clash in a gruesome battle for glory and gold, in Southpeak's PlayStation Portable version of Blood Bowl. A tongue-in-cheek combination of Warhammer RPG-style battle and American football, the game is won by passing or running the ball into the opponent's end zone for a touchdown, but the players on the field wear armor and wield deadly medieval weapons. Gamers take the roles of coaches, drafting their teams from one of eight fantasy races, including humans, elves, orcs, and goblins. Each race offers a different balance of strength, speed, and accuracy. Individual players' skills can affect their chances of successfully blocking, dodging, tackling, and throwing or catching the ball, and also their combat moves. Over the length of a season, teams can be improved by drafting new players and purchasing gear upgrades. The PSP game follows the official Blood Bowl rulebook. The turn-based mode is played much like grid-lined console RPG combat, except that the goal is not (necessarily) to slay everyone on the other team, but to move the ball across the field. A real-time mode is also available, to challenge the coaches' quick thinking abilities as well as their tactical planning skills. The original tabletop version of Blood Bowl, played with miniature figures and dice, was created in 1987 by Jervis Johnson of Games Workshop, who also helped design Warhammer 40,000 and Warhammer Ancient Battles. The console and computer versions of the game were developed by France's Cyanide studio, whose previous credits include the European releases Pro Rugby Manager and Chaos League.

In Dementium II, Nintendo DS gamers become trapped in the most horrid reaches of their own imaginations. The sequel to developer Renegade Kid's 2007 handheld survival-horror game returns players to the first-person role of the unfortunate William Redmoor, who appears to have just undergone brain surgery at the Bright Dawn Treatment Centre. William awakes to find that he is alone, in a macabre prison populated by violent zombies, tortured lunatics, and indescribably grotesque monstrosities of bloody flesh and sinew. Or is he? In a flash, the setting seems to change; sterile hospital corridors take the place of blood-spattered walls, and undead enemies are revealed to be well-meaning sanitarium orderlies and security guards. Such unsettling shifts move the player's perceptions from an eerily reassuring hospital setting to the hellish surroundings of an industrial dungeon, seeding defensive unease and moral uncertainty throughout the adventure. The play of the game involves exploration and puzzle-solving, as well as combat using both firearms and melee weapons. New weapons, such as the sledgehammer, have been made available since the first game, and players can now hold the flashlight with one hand while wielding a small weapon in the other. Featuring prominent themes of violence and gore, the "M"-rated Dementium II is intended only for the bravest of grown-up gamers.

A hero is born, in this interactive adaptation of Christopher Nolan's 2005 comics-inspired cinema. Based directly on the movie, the Batman Begins video games are designed to allow players to discover the Batman as for the first time, by exploring the roles of both young Bruce Wayne and his fledgling alter ego. In addition to the combat one would expect from any adventure featuring the grim hero, gameplay involves exploration and stealth. Batman's famous utility belt comes into play, as different gadgets allow him to reach remote areas, survey situations from a safe location, and unleash surprise attacks. The film spotlights its heavy-duty interpretation of the Batmoblie, as well, and the highly versatile vehicle is featured in the game's combat racing sequences. Game characters are designed to look like their silver-screen counterparts and are voiced by the actors featured in the film, including Christian Bale as the dark hero, Liam Neeson as mentor Henri Ducard, Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox, and Cillian Murphy as Dr. Jonathan Crane. Unlike earlier Batman games of the 128-bit generation, Batman Begins is published by Electronic Arts.

Every meal is graded by Chef Ramsay, and as gamers progress they can unlock authentic recipes from Ramsay's personal collection.
