Collecting together the first three series' of THE LEAGUE OF GENTLEMEN, this release also includes the ghoulish Christmas Special from 2000. The action is set in the macabre village of Royston Vasey, where actor/creators Reece Shearsmith, Mark Gatiss, and Steve Pemberton act out a variety of weird and wonderful characters. The League got their start on radio and in the theater, and the influence of both these mediums is apparent in the first series, which relies on mostly sketch-based material. The second series took a turn into darker, more cinematic waters, with an increased budget offering the ensemble the chance to stretch their talents and draw on the influence of old horror films, which is one of their abiding influences. The third series saw the format of the show turned on its head yet again, with Shearsmith, Gatiss, Pemberton, and co-creator Jeremy Dyson focusing on just a few characters per episode. Despite an irritating, tacked-on voice-over narration that somebody must have thought was necessary to make sense of the story (it wasn't), Last of the Dogmen is actually a very moving and magical film. Tom Berenger plays a Montana bounty hunter who helps an anthropologist (Barbara Hershey) search for the descendants of a Cheyenne tribe who disappeared in the 1870s. What the two find in a remote mountain stretch is an entire community of Cheyenne who have kept themselves cut off from the modern world. A Dances with Wolves parallel emerges as the white outsiders gradually fit in, but Last of the Dogmen stands up just fine without comparison to any other films. As in Kevin Costner's Oscar-winning movie, however, there are ways in which this film captures a similar sense of yearning, mystery, and loss. --Tom Keogh Minimize

His follow up, THE FALL, is just as beautiful as his previous work and features a stamp of approval from David Fincher and Spike Jonze. Like those celebrated directors, Tarsem got his start in the highly visual medium of music videos, and THE FALL is appropriately one of the most striking films to hit the screen in recent memory. Set in Los Angeles in 1915, the story revolves around a five-year-old girl (Catinca Untaru) named Alexandria, who wanders around a hospital after breaking her arm. There she meets bedridden Roy (Lee Pace of PUSHING DAISIES), a Hollywood stuntman who is paralyzed after an ill-fated attempt to impress a woman. Roy beguiles Alexandria with a tale that mirrors his own failed romance but his imagination takes it to new levels. People in the hospital appear in the story la THE WIZARD OF OZ, but it's a surreal, fantastic epic that enchants Alexandria and convinces her to bring morphine pills to Roy so he can commit suicide. Based on the Bulgarian film YO HO HO, THE FALL is an excellent example of a triumph of style over substance. The plot is interesting and the acting is solid particularly the work from first-time Romanian actress Untaru but it's hard to pay attention to any of that when Colin Watkinson's cinematography and Ged Clarke's production design are so stunning.
