Originally developed by Chase Aircraft the C-123 Provider was well received during its experimental and trial phases but due to political concerns Fairchild Aircraft was eventually awarded the contract for C-123 production. Good initial performance and a stellar showing at a follow-up army evaluation trial made the C-123 an ideal aircraft for U.S. Army transport operations in Vietnam. C-123s were also utilized in a number of specialty roles such as VIP transport paradrop training and defoliation operations in Vietnam.
