This is the book the interior design world has been waiting for! Since 1929 Scalamandre has been weaving its own exquisite silks, wools, linens and cottons as well as laboriously hand making elaborate and ornate passementerie (trims, cordings, tiebacks and fringes) for some of the finest interiors in the country. Scalamandre has also had the unique role of being the major manufacturer of historical fabrics in the United States, and over the years has woven historically accurate textiles for restorations ranging from the Red Room of the White House to William Morris' home Kelmscott in England. At last, the story of this leading design and manufacturing house is told, and is introduced by personal reminiscences by Adriana Scalamandre (no accent on her name) Bitter, chairman of the board. Visiting high-end homes across the country, designed by a fifteen different professionals, we see the lush, colorful furnishings, draperies, wall coverings and decorative moods that Scalamandre textiles produce. Ranging from Traditional, English Regency Contemporary, Neoclassical and Aesthetic and Cottage styles to Bungalow, Country French and Louis XV elegance, these rooms are rich with color and personality, always touting refinement and elegance. Designers include: Michael Simon, Joan Kruse Rogers, Cass Daley, Melinda Gray, Kent Kiesey, John Rolland, Nancy Serafini, Meredith Moriarti, Carol Knott, Betsy Best, Robert Bitter, and JZ Knight. Three historic homes are featured as well. Brian D. Coleman, M.D., is a practicing psychiatrist in Seattle, Washington. Brian is a graduate of Stanford University and Chicago Medical School. Also an old house enthusiast, Brian has grown his love for historic restoration into an active second career. He is the author of Classic Cottages (see page 00) and has published two books about his home ("Vintage Victorian Textiles", 2001, Schiffer Publishing; "The Victorian Dining Room", 2002, Schiffer Publishing). Brian divides his time between New York, where he maintains an apartment, and Seattle where he lives in a unique Victorian. Dan Mayers is a New York-based photographer whose work appears regularly in Country Decorating magazine's Cottage Style, Country Collectibles and Country Victorian as well as Old House Interiors. His work has been included in such books as the Ultimate Kitchen and has been exhibited both nationally and internationally.

Published in association with Joy of Giving Something, Inc., New York. Hatakeyama's color work is marked by two overarching qualities. The first is a studious quality where the careful compositions and richness of detail associated with large format photography lend the work an impressive formal rigour. Complementing this formality is an attraction to the visual dynamics of industry and production. The two groupings of photographs in Atmos were made in 2003 on the Camargue plain where the Rhône River reaches the Mediterranean Sea in the south of France. The first grouping, bound on the right hand side of the book, reflects the serene wilderness typical of the Camargue. The second group were made on the grounds of a steel factory located on the eastern edge of the delta. During the steel making process, twenty tons of water are poured over the redhot coke, releasing an immense steam cloud which is visible every few minutes. "The etymology of 'atmosphere' is the ancient Greek words for vapor (atmos) and sphere (sphaira). Once I learned this, the air that filled the Camargue and the steam from the steel factory seemed to fuse into one before my eyes. It no longer felt strange to see signs of humanity in the sky and the land, nor to sense nature in the cloud of steam from the factory."- Naoya Hatakeyama

Mirrors is one of Nobel laureate Naguib Mahfouz's more unusual works. First published in serialized form in the Egyptian television magazine, it consists of a series of vignettes of characters from a writer's life -- a writer very like Mahfouz himself. And accompanying each vignette is a portrait of the character by a friend of the author, the renowned Alexandrian artist Seif Wanli. Through each vignette -- whether of a lifelong friend, a sometime adversary, or a childhood sweetheart -- not only is that one character described but much light is thrown on other characters already familiar or yet to be encountered, as well as on the narrator himself, who we come to know well through the mirrors of his world of acquaintances. At the same time, Mirrors also reflects the recent history of Egypt, its political movements, its leaders, its wars, and its peace, all of which affect the lives of friends and enemies and of the narrator himself. As the translator writes in his introduction, "the narrator's acquaintances from childhood, schooldays, and civil service career take him from the lofty heights of intellectual salons to the seamy squalor of brothels and drug dens; from the dreams of youth and nationalistic ideals to the sobering realities of post-revolutionary society and clashing economic and political values."The apparently simple but penetrating portraits by Seif Wanli add an extra, distinctive dimension to this already intriguing book. They originally appeared with the serialized texts in the television magazine, but were omitted when the book was first published in 1972, and were also omitted when the English translation first appeared in 1977. Now, in this special edition, the pictures and the complete text appear together for the first time.

The absolute dedication required by embroidery's sophistica
... Read more
The absolute dedication required by embroidery's sophisticated, precious handiwork has rendered it increasingly rare: as a craft, it calls for mental discipline even more than physical, and for infinite patience, virtues so far from contemporary, so eccentric in a society that wants everything delivered at once, that of course embroidery has come into the spotlight again. Embroidery: Italian Fashion follows the technique's recent rise in a national culture known for its opulence and emotion, and brings readers the experience of both with a soft, embroidered cover. Inside, the details of micro-paillettes, mirrors, bugle beads, ribbons and implausibly thin threads produce virtuosities, coups de theCtre, surprising elegances. Embroidery is a door on a wondrous, opulent dimension where light plays with the richness of threads, and Embroidery shows its meaning transformed by the violence of modern lines and gestures, like the burnt Swarovski crystals that are Riccardo Tisci's hallmark. When Antonio Marras presented a skirt at his first Milan show in which the embroidery seemed to allude to beginner's work, to the gauze on which little girls once learned to sew, he asked his embroiderers to imitate this style, calling it "wrongstitch." And those extraordinary craftswomen, accustomed to perfection, learned just what feeling, what fascination can be concealed in an apparent mistake. The embroiderers and their colleagues remain the silent but ever-present heroines of this revival, their handiwork recalling the human touch at every glance. Includes work from Anna Molinari, Blumarine, Dolce & Gabbana, Emilio Pucci, Gianfranco Ferre, Marni, Roberto Cavalli, Valentino and Versace.

The set of six coasters includes a stand for storage. Artisan Info: "In 1980 I left behind a career as an accountant and I dove into the artistic universe. I began as an artisan's assistant and a sculptor, and gradually I became fascinated with gems and crystals. Soon after, I was exhibiting my work at local art fairs and markets. "Despite the fact my academic formation revolved around sitting behind a desk, now I can tell you I could never go back to a technical or bureaucratic job - I have more patience for art than for logic! "Nowadays I travel throughout Brazil in search of crystals from Bahia, emeralds from Minas Gerais, agates from Rio Grande do Sul, and many other naturally occurring wonders. I continuously learn new techniques and craft different products. I realize I have experienced a great personal transformation. Although many times difficult, I have learned that the path of an artisan is a path without return in which a person experiences beauty to the maximum, as well as moments of singular freedom. Creator of brilliant devotional paintings and mosaics, Cima
... Read more
Creator of brilliant devotional paintings and mosaics, Cimabue (c. 1240-1302) represented the transition from medieval to early Renaissance art; his legacy is revealed in this authoritative volume, the first new monograph in 30 years. Cimabue is credited with bringing a naturalistic style to the stiff Byzantine forms of 13th-century art. The appeal of his work is undeniable: his trademark elements -- gilt thrones for the Madonna and angels with great multicolored wings -- were echoed by generations of artists, and even today his pieces speak with immediacy and power. In the absence of surviving documentation, many elegant, classical works are convincingly attributed to Cimabue, works in the collections of the Uffizi, the Louvre, and the National Gallery in Washington, D.C. Other of his saints and Madonnas still decorate the churches for which they were created: paintings in Arezzo, Bologna, Florence, and Pisa, as well as the frescoes in the church of St. Francis in Assisi that were severely damaged in the earthquakes of 1997 (the frescoes are reproduced here as they looked just before the tremors). Luciano Bellosi's text examines the written and painted documentary evidence -- not only of Cimabue's work but that of the artists he influenced -- to create a vivid portrait of the artist in the historical, political, and cultural context of Tuscany and central Italy.

Like a garment wrapped around a body, Islamic ornament is both a supplement and a self-contained piece of art. Drawing on an endlessly rich arsenal of patterns and motifs-geometrical, vegetal, epigraphic, figural-Islamic artisans cover surfaces densely, filling space with an eye toward continuity and infinity. The results are visually stunning and philosophically complex, and adorn the architecture, objects, and paintings of the Islamic world. The first comprehensive study on the history, function, and significance of ornament in Islamic art, Eva Baer's Islamic Ornament unravels the complexity of this artistic tradition as it developed over 900 years across the terrain of the Middle East and Central Asia. Baer offers the reader an illustrated historical survey, detailing the diverse patterns, motifs, and ornamental designs which compose Islamic ornament and the local traditions, foreign influences, and Islamic transformations which they reflect. At the heart of Baer's study are more fundamental questions about ornament and design, such as what limits, content, and purposes define the boundaries of ornament as an architectural and artistic concept. Baer pushes the reader to understand ornament as a language, as a vehicle by which Islamic artisans and artists expressed contemporary ideas and modified ancient ones.

Prized by the avant-garde and the haute bourgeoisie of central Europe in the nineteenth century, Biedermeier style is experiencing an unprecedented revival around the world today. "Biedermeier", with its newly updated introduction and expanded bibliography, serves as an unrivaled sourcebook for those who are interested in the furniture and decor of an era that has uncanny parallels with our own. Angus Wilkie traces the complex history of this forgotten era, giving a cultural background to the work itself. Providing an overview of the astonishing variety of furniture produced by local cabinetmakers from Germany to Scandinavia, this text showcases the candlesticks, secretaries, and spittoons crafted in rich fruitwoods and subtly decorated with ebony inlay and sunburst veneer. Over 160 specially commissioned color photographs - as well as watercolors of Biedermeier interiors, original textile designs, and original drawings of furniture and draperies - illustrate this book. With its display of entire rooms as well as individual pieces, "Biedermeier" is a magnificent book that has garnered a wide audience among decorators, homeowners, collectors, dealers, and historians.

This volume surveys the history of Modern art, from the turn of the century to approximately 1970. A unique and unprecedented partnership between the Guggenheim Museum and the Musae national d'art moderne brings together more than 300 paintings, sculptures and drawings by over 150 artists, including Joseph Beuys, Jean Dubuffet, Max Ernst, Yves Klein, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso and Jackson Pollock. The Musae and the Guggenheim represent two distinct kinds of museums: a public, government-run institution and a private museum. The former is one institution within a multidisciplinary cultural center; the latter has grown from a private collection of non-objective painting into a network of international museums of Modern and Contemporary art. One originally celebrated almost exclusively the Modern art produced in France, the other various abstract painters from the European avant-garde. Thus does Rendezvous allow a dialogue between two museums renowned for their contributions to the history of Modernism.

This is a unique time in the history of Tibetan furniture, and this is the only comprehensive book on the subject. Tibetans value their painted furniture highly, but their reverence antiquities for their own sake is not particularly strong. The result is that antique Tibetan furniture is more highly valued outside of Tibet than it is within, and it is becoming increasing popular among Western collectors. Contacts with peoples all over Asia can be traced in the designs found on Tibetan furniture, recording a rich history of cultural and trading exchange. In recent centuries the dominant artistic and cultural force has been China and the influence of Chinese decorative arts is a constant theme running through Tibetan painted decoration from the 16th century onwards. Despite this influence Tibetan artisans rarely copied designs precisely; rather they adapted and modified the motifs and the decorative styles they saw to suit their own ends and to reflect their Tantric Buddhist outlook, so that Tibetan furniture cannot be mistaken or confused with work from other cultures. The first several chapters of this book explain the forms and uses of Tibetan furniture, the construction and decoration of the main types, and the history of many designs. Examples illustrate the range of types of furniture in Tibet and the range of decoration, both painted and carved. The last, largest chapter presents examples with descriptions that expand on themes developed earlier. In most cases aesthetic considerations have been the primary criterion for inclusion, but the book is more than a catalogue of attractive pieces. Attentive readers will learn to: identify the main types of Tibetan furniture; appreciate their origin and their uses; identify and understand the most common designs; judge the quality of pieces; and derive increased pleasure from Tibetan furniture they have bought.

Brassaï became interested in the marginal art form of graffiti in the 1930s, seeing it as a form of outsider art that could open the door to new forms of artistic expression. His atmospheric photographs capture the essence of this unfettered creation. Stark contrasts of black and white alternate with softer shades of grey that meld into one another, smoothing the harsh gouges typical of graffiti. Several of these photographs first appeared in the Surrealist review Minotaure; others were first published in France and Germany in 1960, in a work entitled Graffiti, which accompanied an exhibition that visited New York, London, Milan, Baden-Baden, Frankfurt, Hannover, and Paris. The approach was hugely influential, both for the Surrealists and in the domain of Outsider Art. Accompanying the photographs are selections from previously unpublished writings, including extracts from Brassaï's own notebooks, in which he noted the presence of elements of graffiti on the walls of Paris that he intended to photograph. The book also contains an interview with Picasso on the subject of graffiti as an art form. This first English language version of this classic title is a beautifully produced edition of what is undoubtedly a seminal work in the history of modern photography.

Monumental India presents breathtaking panoramic views of North India's famed monuments and sites as well as little-known architectural gems. Produced in a landscape format and including stunning multipage gatefolds, it covers many fascinating varieties of styles and periods and features sprawling Hindu and Jain temple complexes, imposing Islamic tombs and mosques, serene Buddhist monasteries and stupas, colonial and royal palaces, and majestic forts. The camera enters magnificent darbar halls where maharajas once held formal audience, and the opulent interiors of their private apartments, with mirrored decorations, chandeliers, and luxurious brocades. Beginning high in the Zanskar Mountains, Amit Pasricha photographs the 13th-century Thiksey Monastery that clings to a hillside in Ladakh. In Chandigarh, he captures Le Corbusier's revolutionary design that altered the course of modern Indian architecture, and in Agra and Delhi, the iconic Taj Mahal and the colonial North and South Blocks. He travels across the deserts of Rajasthan to the massive 15th-century Rajput fort of Kumbalgarh, and crosses the plains to Madhya Pradesh for the sparkling Jai Vilas Palace and the 2nd-century BCE Sanchi stupa, ending this incredible journey at the prehistoric Bhimbetka Caves Amit Pasricha enlists the elements - sun, snow, mist, and cloud - to give the photographs cosmic drama, and his mastery of the panoramic format underscores the majesty of nature and the glory of manmade structures. His images capture the broad sweep of an edifice along with its finest, most intricate details. Aman Nath's insightful text completes this beautiful collection of photographs, making Monumental India a limited edition to be preserved and treasured.

American picturesque, as defined by John Conron, is America's first aesthetic, one that permeated all aspects of American culture in the nineteenth century. Twenty years in the making, this book presents the picturesque aesthetic as the common thread holding together American literature, art, and landscape architecture. Focusing on the peak years of the aesthetic, 1830 - 1880, Conron describes how the picturesque transformed not only American perception but also American space. American Picturesque demonstrates the sweeping breadth of the concept and the specific aesthetic of the picturesque in many aspects of nineteenth-century American culture. Conron traces the picturesque through landscape, topographical, and genre painting; rural cottages and villas in styles ranging from Gothic and Italian Revival to Queen Anne; a landscape garden (Montgomery Place); a rural cemetery (Mount Auburn); a suburb (Llewellyn Park); Central Park and urban architecture; and prose narratives by James Fenimore Cooper, Henry David Thoreau, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Frederick Douglass, Harriet Wilson, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Elizabeth Stuart Phelps, and others. Ultimately, Conron ably defines the multifaceted structure of the picturesque and establishes its influence on nineteenth-century writers and artists in various media. He also shows how the picturesque aesthetic influenced people from all walks of life in the way they perceived a painting, a woodland scene, a public park, a house, or even one another. This book will appeal to anyone interested in nineteenth-century American art, literature, or culture in general.

Thai style, so vividly revealed in its architecture and interiors, is the product of a distinctive landscape, a skillful use of varied influences, and a history unique among the peoples of Southeast Asia. It is a style that can be found in rustic country homes or chic Bangkok residences elegantly furnished with antiques and family heirlooms. It may be reflected in a number of unique and historic houses which preserve the best of the past, in unmistakably contemporary interiors where old and new sit comfortably side by side, in traditional structures revamped for modern living, and in lush tropical garden settings and seaside resorts. The over 370 color photographs by Luca Invernizzi Tettoni present a luminous vision of this distinctive style. A concise introduction by author William Warren places Thai design in context and adds another dimension to our understanding of Thai culture. It is followed by a photographic essay which isolates elements of Thai style, from traditional objects and art forms to handicrafts and street art.Architecture and interiors are treated in four chapters--Traditions, Traditions Adapted, Foreign Influences and Tropical Modern. Useful measured drawings are featured in the Architectural Notebook, a final section.
