The foliage of this very interesting plant is held in horizontal planes on vertical stems and the leaves can be up to one foot long. The leaflets are stiff, leathery, and a grayish or bluish green color above with an olive green underneath with spiny toothed edges. The plants produces panicles of fragrant golden yellow flowers in mid winter or very early spring spring followed by grape-like cluster of blue black fruit. The fruit is actually more attractive than the flowers and is a source of food for wildlife. This shrub will perform best on a well drained acidic soil and is intolerant of poor drainage. It works well as a barrier shrub or specimen as it only grows 4-8 feet tall and and 4-5 feet wide. Zone 7-8.

Corkscrew Willow (Salix matsudana 'Tortuosa') The Corkscrew Willow tree, Salix matsudana,'Tortuosa', is a small to medium-sized, upright spreading tree of about 30 feet in height with a 15-foot-spread. This deciduous tree is also known as Tortuosa or Dragon's Claw Willow. Perhaps best grown as a specimen for display of its twisted branching. Branches arise from the trunk at an acute angle and grow up almost parallel to the trunk before they curve back to the horizontal. The winter branch pattern is most interesting and accounts for the popularity of the tree. Corkscrew Willow trees tolerate any soil, especially wet soils with poor drainage. It is a fast growing tree with narrow light green leaves. Zone 5-9. Planted in the Jardin botanique de Montreal

Quickfire Late Panicle (Hydrangea x 'Quickfire') Paniculata
... Read more
Quickfire Late Panicle (Hydrangea x 'Quickfire') Paniculata hydrangeas will grow and bloom in a wide variety of climates (hardy to Zone 3!). If your weather is too cold to support the pink and blue hydrangeas or if your landscape doesn't have much shade, consider growing one of the many types of paniculatas. North or south, we can all enjoy them. Another desirable trait of all paniculatas is their tolerance for pruning. One can prune them at any time except when they begin forming bloom heads in the summer. The name "paniculata" comes from the fact that the blooms are usually panicle-shaped (somewhat cone shaped) rather than ball-shaped. Many paniculata blooms develop a lovely pink shade as the blooms age, extending their beauty into the fall. Paniculatas often get very large. 8-10 feet tall and wide is not unusual. Quickfire The first to bloom! Quickfire blooms about a month before other Hydrangea paniculata (hardy hydrangea) varieties. Extend the hydrangea season in your garden with a planting of Hydrangea Quickfire. The flowers turn pink very quickly, and will be an extremely dark rosy-pink in the fall. Quick and easy to grow. The flowers on Quickfire are not affected by soil pH. They are produced on ‘new wood’ and will bloom after even the harshest winters. Beautiful for use as a cut (fresh or dried) flower. Plant with Little Lamb and Limelight for months of hydrangea flowers. Their mature hight is 5-6 ft and 5-6 ft wide, can be kept somewhat compact and pruned in late fall or early spring since they bloom on new wood. For instructions on pruning, please email Diane . Since you may want to prune this plant up and over your perennial border or let it weep over your Hydranga serratas . Zone 3-9. Thanks to good shipping rates, we are able to ship these all year, they ship with soil in their containers.

The Florida Azalea blooms in early spring before as the leaves are beginning to expand. The fragrant blossoms come in shades of orange through gold and yellow, and measure approximately 1 to 1.5 inches across. This species has very long stamens and the tube of the flower is often flushed with red but there is no blotch. Discovered by Dr. A. W. Chapman before 1865, R. austrinum is similar in many respects to R. canescens including the sticky glanular hairs on the flower tube, but differs in the color variations which are orange to yellow rather than pink to white. R. austrinum makes an excellent landscape plant as well as a valuable hybridizing resource, especially in southern gardens where heat tolerance is important. Zone 6-10.

Bigleaf Magnolia is a rare deciduous native found in the understory of rich forests with enormous tropical-looking leaves (the largest simple leaves of any tree in the US) that have auriculate (earlobe-shaped) bases. It is much less common than the similar Umbrella-Tree (M. tripetala), which has smaller leaves (though still large) without the lobes at the base. Surprisingly, the tree itself doesnt get especially big, usually no more than 50 feet tall. Most plants have a thick trunk and a rounded crown of stout branches. The fragrant flowers, which appear in late spring or early summer, have six white petals surrounding a yellow and purple center. Unfortunately they are often partly hidden in the foliage and thus hard to see from ground level. The fruit is a cone-shaped pod containing large red or scarlet seeds. Zone 5-8.

The Winter Jasmine is easy to grow, often ignored since it does not mind poor treatment, which it may answer with loosing some leaves. This is probably the main reason why this shrub is so often left to its own devices in life. If you have it do so too, it does not to trimmed, pruned or butchered. It will grow in most soils, in most aspects, dry or moist, sun or part shade. It will even tolerate either slightly acidic or slightly alkaline soil. It is usually grown as a 'wall' shrub, and is certainly magnificent on a sunny wall where the wood can ripen ready to burst into flower in the depth of winter - or from mid-autumn. We have it growing into a trellis with just a little guidance. A little feeding cannot be wrong, some organic manures, Fish Fertilizer, blood & bone meal will speed it along very well. With its lax habit it can have a height of 4 ft. and a width of 7 ft. or more. On a trellis it can go to 15 ft. Zone 6-10.

Hydrangea serrata 'Little Geisha' JAPANESE MOUNTAIN HYDRANGEAS are hale and hardy. Bud hardy yet very feminine. High maintenance? Not these ladies. In 10 years they have bloomed every year for everyone I have planted. They remain dormant longer and avoid late frosts. Generally they are somewhat smaller than the H. macrophylla. H. serrata 'Little Geisha' This is a small shrub about 2 feet high. Tennis ball size blooms. It's not uncommon for a a plant to have 50 to 100 blooms. Blooms range in color from light blue to pink depending on soil pH. By far the most floriferous serrata. Like their 'French' cousins they like good drainage, good soil and water and fertilizer. But you don't have to hover over them. Just plant them well to begin with and water once a week. Give them acidity, (sulphur) for better blues and alkalinity, (lime) for more pinks. Don't trim them. Just cut yourself some bouquets. Do yourself a favor...grow some of these. You don't have 15 years to waste. Zone 6-10.
