These colorful earrings are made with African sandcast bead
... Read more
These colorful earrings are made with African sandcast beads and accented with bicone wood beads from Thailand. The gunmetal plated brass hoops with lever back closure measure 1 1/4" diameter. The sandcast beads are made in Ghana, Africa. Sand cast beads, also known as powdered glass beads, are a unique form of artwork used in jewelry out of Ghana, Africa. The majority of them currently are hand made in Ghana, although other west African countries produce them as well. The beads are made by grinding up scrap glass, such as bottles, to a very fine powder. They are then fired in clay molds at low temperatures which has the effect of adding additional texture to the beads. Once done, the bead makers apply paint for additional style and decoration. Due to this very hands-on process, no two beads will ever be identical, and slight variations in size, texture, shape, and so on are to be expected. This is an art form, and not items that are mass produced by machinery.
