Women's bodies are different from men's, so women-specific cycling clothing should be different, too. Although that seems self-evident, it seldom happens; however, the Castelli Vizio Due Women's Shorts have been designed with the specific needs of women in mind. The Action micro fiber that Castelli uses must be considered one of the wonder fabrics of the world. Soft and stretchy, it is a Power Lycra that keeps you properly compressed without squeezing too tight. What makes this such a perfect fabric for cycling shorts, however, is the fact that in spite of its soft smoothness, it is incredibly durable and abrasion-resistant. You won't have to worry about overheating on hot days because the back quarter panels have been made from the Breath microfiber which has an open weave design that allows significant airflow. The partial Giro3 gripper at the leg hems will work to keep shorts in place on your leg. But the folks at Castelli have thoughtfully kept the leg opening from being so snug so as to create the dreaded "sausage effect." The four-needle flat-lock stitching is also a big reason why you'll find these shorts so comfortable, as is the plissAA insert at the waist that makes it pliant and comfortable even when you are hunkered down in the drops. Where you will really be thankful that Castelli has taken such trouble to make these the best shorts possible is in the insert they've used. The Kiss3 Donna-Specific Seat Pad is as comfortable and advanced as Castelli's top-of-the-line Progetto X2, but costs less. It made the seamless skin care layer from a super soft brushed microfiber to maximize the luxurious comfort and perfect fit. Since it is seamless, there will be no worries about unwanted chafing along boundary lines, while the flexibility of the material will help the pad move with you. It has also been given a bacteriostatic treatment to avoid saddle sores and infections.

There's no shame in admitting that a short has to look as good as it performs to earn the right to live in your cycling wardrobe. Few brands understand this as well as Capo, which has created a strikingly good-looking women's line that features all of the comfortable and performance-maximizing technologies as their men's line. The Capo Modena Donna Shorts are an exemplary do-it-all addition to your kit with a flattering fit and just hint of that classic Italian panache that Capo is so adept at re-creating. The Capo Modena Donna Shorts are crafted from Power Lycra, which offers a supportive and comfortable fit without compromising breathability or freedom of movement. The extra-wide waistband crosses at the front, to prevent the short from pinching or digging into your tummy while you're hunched over in the drops. After only a few hours in the saddle, this is a significant feature that can certainly affect how much you look forward to throwing a leg over your bike. The chamois is an Italian-sourced multi-density, women's-specific Veloce HD EIT Insert designed specifically for Capo. This anatomically-optimized pad is channeled for maximum airflow, and is designed to stretch and move with you as you dance on the pedals. This level of comfort and support is as ideal for an all-day century ride as it is for a quick power-hour in spin class. The Modena Donna Shorts feature anatomically contoured panels which are joined via soft, flatlock stitching to reduce chafing and abrasion. The left leg has a subtle logo hit which nicely matches the Modena Donna Jersey. A silicone bead on the inside of each leg hem helps keep the shorts in place while you ride. While Black is the only color available, you may choose from sizes X-Small through Large.

Especially in the available White colorway, there's an undeniably bold Euro-fabulous aesthetic to the Capo Dorato Bib Shorts. Even the name 'Dorato' itself is Italian for 'gold,' and is acknowledged in the golden stripe accents on the sides and back of the short. However, a deeper inspection reveals a highly technical short capable of tackling long rides through Tuscan wine country and tall climbs over the French alps, before stopping for gratuitous post-ride pastries and espresso drinks. The Dorato Bib Shorts follow the contoured construction seen in Capo's top-shelf shorts while simplifying things a bit. There are eight panels rather than ten (or more), three around and one wrapping the bottom of each leg. The bib suspenders are a more traditional lightweight and breathable mesh. The legs are constructed from a high-gauge (HG) Lycra. The material feels dense and three-dimensional in the hand. This feature gives it muscle compression for greater comfort, abrasion resistance for durability, and moisture-transfer so you won't feel like you're bathing in perspiration on hot days. Rather than use a traditional gripper on the leg cuff, the Dorato utilizes a wide, doubled-over layer of laser-cut HG Lycra with a light silicone treatment to the underside. It's the same careful hem detail that Capo uses on their top-tier Volta and Drago kits. The generous width of the band makes the grip gentle, while the two layers limit stretch and thus grip your legs no matter how much they move. The chamois is Capo's Anatomic-DP Carbon Elastic Interface Technology (EIT) Insert. They use high-density open-cell foam bonded to an anti-microbial microfiber layer that has antimicrobial carbon fiber threads woven through it to aid in moisture evaporation. In addition to the slim, movement-freeing shape, there are 6mm and 8mm-thick pads built into the pre-curved profile to optimize support on longer rides. The Capo Dorato Bib Shorts come in Black or White. Sizes run from Small to XX-Large.

Not every day can be 70 degrees and sunny. Louis Garneau designed the Fit Sensor 2 Shorts to help your body regulate its temperature in chillier weather conditions. You get all the fundamentals here, such as 10 panel ergonomic construction, seamless inner thighs, back and bottom reflective logos, and flatlock seams. But the real story is in the fabric selection.Fit Sensor fabric is the key to GarneauAAAs cold weather strategy. The nylon outer layer isn't just abrasion-resistant, but keeps out skin-chilling wind. The inner layer of brushed polyester is soft to the touch and wicks moisture away from your skin. The high Lycra content (16%) ensures a comfortable fit and provides muscle support. It also reduces the fatiguing effects of road vibration. Fit Sensor boasts an SPF rating of 50, which is key on long rides where waterproof sunscreen doesnAAAt stand a chance against perspiration. Garneau also incorporated Powerbands at the cuffs to keep the shorts in place. The Airzone chamois features Beveled Molding Edges that provide a smooth transition from pad to fabric to eliminate pinching and chafing. Garneau also reduced the size of the vents in the chamois, but doubled their numbers. This increases comfort and durability. The seamless, four-way stretch Airzone chamois receives an anti-bacterial treatment to control odor, and pre-molded wings to add comfort while protecting against inner-thigh chafing.Louis GarneauAAAs Fit Sensor 2 Shorts are available in Black. They come in sizes XS to XXL.

Research on endurance athletes -- cyclists in particular -- has shown that performance suffers as core temperature rises. At first glance, the Hincapie Emergence Bib Shorts don't look like they'd do anything to help keep you cool. They are solid black, and black absorbs heat more readily than lighter colors. However, Hincapie is offering a new technology called Coldblack, made by Schoeller. Coldblack is a finish that coats the shorts, reflecting heat energy away from your body and helping to keep you cooler. The 11-panel bibs are cut from Hincapie's AT1 Dynamic fabric, a lightweight and handkerchief-soft nylon/polyester/elastic blend. Body mapping technology allows the fabric to be changed within individual panels so that the amount of elasticity or breathability even within a given panel can be dialed to the exact needs of the rider. You'll get extra give where you need it, like across the rear, while other areas can provide less stretch and more support, such as along the hamstrings. The fabric is coated with a hydrophilic finish that speeds wicking anddrying to keep you as cool and dry as possible. The Emergence chamois features multi-thickness, high-density foam and a 3D-curved anatomic shape. This means that it conforms to your body more naturally than other pads that are manufactured flat and then sewn into shorts. The foam is covered with an antimicrobial microfiber for a soft feel against the skin that won't cause chafing. The cover also features Carbonium fibers to increase heat dispersion on hot days. Another bonus is that the carbon in the chamois also provides some antibacterial protection. The Hincapie Emergence Bib Shorts are Coldblack and come in five sizes from Small through XX-Large. The Coldblack finish helps regulate heat by reflecting environmental heat away from the body and providing a 50+ SPF for significant UVA and UVB protection. Seams are flatlocked for minimal bulk.

The Capo lineup changes subtly from season to season, but the venerable Modena Bib Short and matching kit is simply too classic to be replaced. The timeless, monochromatic, double-striped graphic on the right leg band is simple and looks fast AAA culling inspiration, in fact, from Italy's Modena Autodrome and the daredevil racers of yesteryear. Throwback or not, racing stripes are never out of vogue, which is probably why the Modena kit has cemented itself in the Capo catalog. Quite frankly, we couldn't be happier. Of course, what is style without substance and function. The Modena Bib Shorts use Power Lycra with panels that wrap around the quads. This gives a subtle degree of compression that will help keep your muscles fresher for longer AAA often, quite possibly the difference between suffering or sprinting at the end of a long, hard race. These are seven-panel shorts, three per leg, with a panel across the lower back. The bib upper uses Capo V-Mesh for comfort and light weight. The chamois in the Modena is the Anatomic L HD Carbon EIT Insert. This is a simple pad relative to what you find in other Capo shorts, but it's pretty sophisticated when you compare it what we used to think of as a regular chamois. First of all, it stretches AAA which is not a big deal, unless you know that many pads don't stretch. It is open-cell foam bonded to a soft, anti-microbial, microfiber layer that has carbon fiber threads woven in to expedite moisture evaporation. A perineal channel for pressure relief runs front to rear between raised pads in the chamois. And, as with all EIT pads, this one is shaped as it's molded; it's designed to curve around your body, not sit flat in a box.The Capo Modena Bib Shorts are available in Black with white stripes, and new for this year, Navy Blue with white and red stripes. Just because the Contour Plus Bib Shorts are no longer at the top of the De Marchi bib heap, that doesnAAAt mean that they arenAAAt still just about the best bib shorts you could ever expect to wear. If you are looking for long-term comfort and Italian styling at a great price, then these will be your bibs of choice.De Marchi uses their pro-grade extra stretch Lycra fabric with high elastane content to deliver a compressive fit. Key muscle zones like the quads and bum get a generous amount of compression while the areas around the genitals and the cuffs have more of a tender hold. Being overly compressed can be just as bad as feeling like weAAAre flopping around inside our shorts, so youAAAll be extremely happy during the beginning, middle and end of a four hour ride that De Marchi has taken the trouble to design a short that is intended to move with your natural anatomy. In the bib, the inelastic mesh at the back it in place while providing essential ventilation. For the insert, De Marchi has relied on its proprietary Contour C12 chamois. Long a comfort reference for cyclists, this pad makes use of De MarchiAAAs unique half-moon shape that allows for a special channel through the center of the pad that suspends the prostate rather than compress it. The design has been streamlined so that the pad is even less obtrusive around the genital area. The midsection of the pad uses a high density polyurethane foam to cushion and support the soft tissues around the prostate. And for the area that cushions the ischiatic bone, De Marchi incorporates their super-high density foam thatAAAs vented so air can easily and keep that typically moist area drier. Silver threads are also woven into the pad fabric to keep bacteria to a minimum and reduce fatiguing static. The De Marchi Contour Plus Bib Short come in three colors: Black, Black/Titanium and Black/White. They are available in sizes Small through XXX-Large.

In the realm of relentless, grinding climbs, the Mortirolo is one near the top of the list. It has an average gradient of 10.5% for over 12 kilometers. The Castelli Mortirolo Bib Shorts capture much of the subtle splendor youAAAd expect from a name like Mortirolo.TheyAAAre part of CastelliAAAs Podium collection, and theyAAAre styled to match the rest of the Mortirolo lineup. What youAAAll get is a contemporary design, but one that is timeless to ensure your kit will still be just as stylish next season. The Mortirolo Bib Shorts are built with a seven-paneled design to mimic the muscular shaping of your legs, and Castelli uses flatlock seam construction to ensure a sleek, comfortable fit without irritation. One detail that we really like is the low cut front panel that facilitates natural breaks if youAAAre an over-the-top kinda guy. And if you prefer it out-the-leg, then itAAAs worth mentioning that these bib shorts donAAAt use gel grippers on the leg cuffs. This makes them comfortable and super easy to get on and off. Castelli uses a doubled lycra cuff here instead. The bib straps are stretchy mesh and disappear underneath your jersey. The Castelli KISS3 pad features triple-layer, multi-density foam to absorb road vibration, and it offers a velour elastic antibacterial surface fabric to reduce the possibility of saddle sores. The seamless construction ensures no hot spots or irritation and provides an anatomic molded shape. The Castelli Mortirolo Bib Shorts are available in six sizes from Small to XXX-Large and come in three colors -- Acid Green, Black/cyan, Black/grey. Please check the dropdown menu for availability.

Off-road riding necessitates fabrics with durability for those instances when a tree comes too close or you miss calculate the sharpness of a turn. Long rides and weekend mountain tours require a more supportive chamois and shorts that stay comfortable in warm conditions. The Women's Countdown Shorts are made with Gore Bike Wear's signature design ingenuity. You can pedal singletrack in the morning and cruise around the city in the afternoon without missing a beat, or switching outfits.Situated dead-center in the Gore Bike Wear off-road line, the Women's Countdown Shorts are a close sister to the Fusion Shorts. A comfortable elastic waistband in the outer shorts allows for natural movement on the bike while a concealed front zip gives a smoother look. Two side pockets with hook and loop closures and a single hip pocket provide ample storage options on short rides when a pack isn't necessary. A reflective logo on the side, and piping on the back and sides keep you visible during evening excursions. The Power chamois in the removable liner rounds out these shorts. The seamless finish helps prevent chafing so your sit-bones and soft tissue stay comfortable. Sensible design makes it a workhorse on medium to long rides, and the channeling on top of the chamois and the moisture-wicking micro-fiber outer fabric make these shorts ideal for mountain biking and adventure riding. The Gore Bike Wear Women's Countdown Shorts comes in Earth Beige, Pool Blue/black, and Black. They're available in X-Small to XX-Large with an inseam length of 23cm (9in).

Presto is what stretchy shorts do for you in the eyes of the public. You wear skin-tight shorts while riding a bike and poof! You're a cyclist, a super-hero. Wearing Castelli Presto Bib Shorts makes you a smart, comfortable cyclist in the eyes of those in the know.We consider these to have a moderately conservative look for Castelli gear. The eight-panel design is curved to fit your body, but they're only using one kind of Lycra, Affinity. Affinity is your classic 190g spandex fabric that is smooth, semi-matte, and has great stretch and rebound. The Castelli name on the legs is sublimated into the fabric so it will look great for the life of the shorts. The panels are sewn together with four-needle flatlock stitching, which is a great-looking, durable method of joinery. Castelli uses contrast stitching to highlight the curved panel design. The bib is classic mesh fabric and the legs are held in place with silicone gel grippers. Each of the legs has reflective tabs on the back. The chamois is Castelli's KISS3 seat pad. The KISS pad is a simpler version of the Castelli's Progetto X2 chamois. The top layer is soft and seamless and lined with 4mm of cushy foam. Underneath that soft layer is an infinitely-shaped high-density foam pad that gives you exactly the right kind of protection exactly where you need it.The Castelli Presto Bib Shorts come in four colors and are sized from Small to XX-Large.

The Pursuit kit occupies the top of Capo's Corsa range. Corsa is a series of shorts and jerseys that use Italian-sourced fabrics to offer club ride-ready comfort, but with the performance you would expect from the technical style savants at Capo. The Pursuit Bib Shorts follow the contoured construction seen in Capo's top-shelf shorts while simplifying things a bit. There are eight panels rather than ten (or more), with three around and one wrapping the bottom of each leg. The cuffs are treated with a traditional silicone bead to keep them in place while you ride. The chamois is Capo's Anatomic-L HD Carbon Elastic Interface Technology (EIT) Insert. They use high-density open-cell foam bonded to an anti-microbial micro-fiber layer that has antimicrobial carbon fiber threads woven through it to aid in moisture evaporation. In addition to the slim, movement-freeing shape, there are 6mm and 8mm-thick pads built into the pre-curved profile to optimize support on longer rides. The Capo Pursuit Bib Shorts are made in Canada. They come in Black, and sizes run from Small to XX-Large.

Sizes run from Small to XX-Large.

Every clothing manufacturer battles for legitimacy by putting its kits on the backs of professional cyclists, but few can lay claim to having been worn on the podium of the sport's greatest stage. Without forcing its name with the pretenses of legitimacy, the Hincapie Equipe Bib Shorts are the same short worn by the BMC Racing Team. Yes, the same team that rode into Paris in July of 2011, with the kit of their leader resplendent in yellow. The Equipe Bib Shorts utilize a broad fabric story to achieve the perfect balance of maximum performance and all-day comfort that the pros crave. Hincapie constructs the Equipe around two key fabrics: AT2 Tour Lycra Power, and AT2 Transition Lycra. The inner Power Lycra 'lining,' is the contact point for your skin, providing compressive support for your muscles at key points. The outer Transition Lycra 'shell' still moves with your body, but its lighter-weight ribbed polyester helps pull moisture off the garment and speed evaporation on the warmest summer rides. Both of these fabrics provide SPF 30+ superior protection from harmful ultraviolet rays. Hincapie also finishes the wind-facing fabric faces and leg bands with their textured DimpleTek fabric, to smoothen airflow over the short. Because of the compressive nature of the Lycra Power already holding the short in place, Hincapie is able to dramatically relax the stretch tension on the upper straps, using their super-soft, self-aerating Diamond Mesh to prevent chafing and enhance cooling under your jersey. These fantastically stretchy and moisture-wicking shoulder straps are especially comfortable for the longer torsos of taller riders. Finally, to ensure the short is comfortable enough for the harsh cobbles on the Spring classics, and cool enough for the hottest climbs into Basque country during the Giro, Hincapie furnishes the Equipe with their seamless and multi-density Team Chamois.

DonAAAt feel like you have to hide the fact you prefer plain shorts to bib shorts; no one here will make fun of you. We have used the Castelli Velocissimo Due Shorts and understand that sometimes it is better to go strapless. Whether you are heading out for a long family ride and want to have some protection under your regular shorts, or you actually prefer having less fabric covering your torso particularly on hot days, youAAAll never regret wearing this version of the Castelli Velocissimo line because, simply, itAAAs so darn comfortable.Part of the genius behind these shorts is a cut that makes full use of the qualities of the special Affinity Lycra 210GR fabric. The Affinity Lycra is the secret weapon behind many of CastelliAAAs most comfortable pieces because it has a wonderful stretch-return aspect that allows it to give when you need to, but then retake its shape once you are back in your habitual riding position. Essentially, it moves with you and doesnAAAt fight or rub against you. ThatAAAs because it has an amazingly soft and smooth texture with an attractive semi-matte finish. Using this fabric in a ten-panel construction means that the bibs will follow your contours so well that you wonAAAt even remember you have them on. Where you will really be thankful that Castelli has taken some trouble to make these the best shorts possible is in the insert it has used. Castelli calls it the Kiss3 chamois, and youAAAll realize the name suits it as soon as you sit on the saddle. It is nearly as comfortable and advanced as their top-of-the-line Progetto X2, but costs considerably less. They have done this by using all of the same comfort features while saving slightly on the construction. What youAAAll get is the seamless skin care layer that is made from a super soft brushed microfiber to maximize the luxurious comfort and perfect fit.
