John Ford's memorable screen version of John Steinbeck's epic novel of the Great Depression--often regarded as the director's best film--stars Henry Fonda as Tom Joad. After having served a brief prison sentence for manslaughter Joad arrives at his family's Oklahoma farm only to find it abandoned. Muley John Qualen a neighbor now nearly mad with grief tells Tom of the drought that has transformed the farmland of Oklahoma into a desert and of the preying land agents who have plowed under the shacks of the sharecroppers. Joined by former hellfire preacher Casy John Carradine Tom finds his extended family including Pa Charles Grapewin and his indomitable Ma Jane Darwell packing their ramshackle truck to seek work in the fields of California. As the family treks across the country their dissolution begins with the deaths of Tom's grandparents at close intervals. When they arrive in California the Joads find only an abundance of poverty-stricken migrants like themselves and little in the way of potential work. Yet ever resilient they maintain their dignity hoping for the best. Among the talented cast Fonda does perhaps the best work of his career as does Qualen in the film's most haunting sequence. Director of photography Gregg Toland captures the suffering and the weathered luminous nobility of the Joads and the other uprooted drifting families creating striking images equal to the best work of Dorothea Lange and Walker Evans. In a stirring film that stands as a microcosm of the depression experience of millions Ford gives poverty a human face in a way that was rare then and even rarer in the decades to follow as Hollywood films with a sense of class consciousness dwindled like a species nearing extinction.

Jennifer Jones won a Golden Globe and an Oscar for her screen debut in this true story. Jones plays young French peasant girl Bernadette Soubirous, who sees a vision of a "beautiful lady" near her home in Lourdes in 1858. Based on the novel of the same name by Franz Werfel, THE SONG OF BERNADETTE explores Bernadette's trials and tribulations from her impoverished family to her difficulties at school to the derision her visions bring upon her and at last to her affliction with bone-marrow cancer. Under the incisive eye of director Henry King, the film is seen through Bernadette's perspective but at the same time focuses upon the effect that Bernadette has upon her family, her champions, and her detractors. The acting is excellent, and no detail has gone untouched in the art direction, costumes, and cinematography. Best of all, THE SONG OF BERNADETTE stands among a rare group of Hollywood films in which visual integrity is matched step for step with thematic zeal.

The Song of Bernadette (1943) Jennifer Jones, William EytheDirector: Henry KingCo-stars: Charles Bickford, Vincent Price, Lee J. Cobb, Gladys Cooper, Anne Revere156 minutes, Black and WhiteDVD: Region 1The Song of Bernadette is a reverent recounting of the life of St. Bernadette of Lourdes. As a teen-aged peasant girl growing up in the tiny French village of Lourdes in the 19th century, Bernadette (Jennifer Jones) experiences a vision of the Virgin Mary in a nearby grotto. At least, she believes that she did. The religious and political "experts" of the region cannot accept the word of a silly little girl, and do their best to get her to renounce her claims. Bernadette's vision becomes a political hot potato for many years, with the authorities alternately permitting and denying the true believers' access to the grotto. No matter what the higher-ups may think of Bernadette, there is little denying that the springs of Lourdes hold some sort of recuperative powers for the sick and lame. Eventually, Bernadette dies, never faltering in her conviction that she saw the Blessed Virgin; years later, she is canonized as a saint, and the Grotto of Lourdes remains standing as a permanent shrine. The 20th Century-Fox people knew that The Song of Bernadette would whip up controversy from both the religious and the agnostic. The company took some of the "curse" off the project with a now-famous opening title: "To those who believe in God, no explanation is necessary. To those who do not believe in God, no explanation is possible." Jennifer Jones's performance in The Song of Bernadette won her the Best Actress Oscar.

Terrence Malick's follow-up to BADLANDS is an exquisitely photographed story of a group of early-20th-century itinerant workers who find themselves entangled in a deadly love triangle. Bill (Richard Gere) and Abby (Brooke Adams) are lovers who are forced to flee Chicago after Bill accidentally murders his foreman. Together, with Bill's little sister, Linda (Linda Manz), they settle on the land of a wealthy farmer (Sam Shepard) and spend their days working in the wheat fields. Bill discovers that the farmer is terminally ill and convinces Abby to marry him so they can inherit his fortune. As the days progress, it becomes apparent that the farmer isn't getting any sicker, and when he discovers that Abby and Bill had initially set out to con him, their carefree existence comes to a deadly end.Notorious for its extended postproduction schedule, DAYS OF HEAVEN remains a beautifully composed work of art. Malick uses dialogue minimally, sometimes choosing not to fade in the sound of a scene until the actors have fin

This GOING MY WAY sequel stars Bing Crosby, reprising his role as worldly-wise Father Chuck O'Malley, and introduces Crosby's beloved song "Aren't You Glad You're You?" Father O'Malley is transferred to the soon-to-be-condemned school run by Sister Benedict (Ingrid Bergman), and the two quickly match wits and stubbornness, eventually finding a middle ground. A surprisingly light touch of sentimentality and humor gives this film by director Leo McCarey a glow of genuine feeling that effortlessly captures viewers' hearts.Though the debate still rages over which Father O'Malley film is better (GOING MY WAY or THE BELLS OF ST. MARY'S), the two films' nominations in back-to-back years for the Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Song Academy Awards declare that both films are a treat to watch.

This intelligent, fun sci-fi TV series aired from 1974-77, and developed a large fan base with its stop-motion animation, special effects, and the quality of its writing. The show followed the adventures of Ranger Rick Marshall and his two children, Will and Holly, whose canoeing trip takes an unexpected turn when they accidentally tumble over a waterfall and enter the Land of the Lost. This is an alternate, ancient realm peopled by the peaceful, Neaderthal-esque Pakuni tribe, as well as the evil lizard creatures known as the sleestaks, which only come out at night and are afraid of fire. The family also encounter a number of dinosaurs both friendly and otherwise, and adopt a baby brontosaurus as a pet and name him Dopey. In the second season, Dopey becomes mired in the "Tar Pit,"and everyone comes together to save him. In "The Test," the Marshall's young Pakuni friend Cha-Ka goes through a harrowing rite of passage to become a man, in which he must steal the egg of a menacing allosaurus. Holly is attacked by

Brian De Palma SCARFACE directed this lavish adaptation of Tom Wolfe's best-selling satirical novel featuring Tom Hanks Melanie Griffith and Bruce Willis. Hanks stars as Sherman McCoy a distinctly 1980s brand of wealthy Wall Street wizard who takes a mighty fall from his glitzy lifestyle after he and his mistress Griffith put a Bronx youth into a coma via a hit-and-run accident. Alcoholic reporter Peter Fallow Willis sees the crime as an opportunity for big headlines and soon Sherman is the target of every political and media group in the city including an Al Sharpton-style black leader named Rev. Bacon John Hancock and a sleazy D.A. F. Murray Abraham. SEX IN THE CITY babe Kim Catrall costars as Sherman's long-suffering wife and Morgan Freeman is the judge who tries to reign in this three-ring media circus of a case. Like the decade it parodies this film is proudly over the top in its lavishness. It's also filled to overflowing with inspired casting wildly inventive comedy and the sort of artistically ambitious tracking shots for which its director is renowned.
