The Civil War was not only a stunning event in military history; it defined the American people by forcing them to grapple with the founding principles of the nation. Rachel Seidman brings together an array of primary sources from the antebellum period, the war, and Reconstruction to provide a well-rounded account of this pivotal era. Political debates and military developments may occupy the historical foreground, but it is the letters, diary entries, memoirs, and testimony of blacks, Native Americans, women, children, farmers, and foot soldiers in the richly textured background that bring the Civil War to life. Ex-slave Frederick Douglass's abolitionist speeches and writings contrast with Southern magazine editor James DeBow's defense of the slave system to set the political conflict in a national context. Northern traveler Caroline Seabury's heartbreaking letter about a slave auction and Southern slave mistress Ella Thomas's conflicted diary entries about her servant Isabella detail the daily brutality of slavery. Confederate general James Longstreet's report of the Battle of Gettysburg and Union general William T. Sherman's letter to the leaders of Atlanta document tactics introduced in the Civil War, while letters between soldiers and their families record the anguish and the courage on the battlefield and at home. A picture essay entitled "Images of War" graphically demonstrates the devastation wrought by the war through photography--a new medium in the 1860s that profoundly changed American attitudes about warfare.Despite the South's surrender, violence and conflict continued during Reconstruction. The 13th Amendment abolished slavery, but state-sanctioned Black Codes limited African American freedoms. At the cost of some 620,000 lives, the battles had ended, but America's struggle with the legacy of slavery was only beginning.

America still reels from the effects of its racial past and conflicts--slavery and affirmative action, agriculture vs. industry, and states rights vs. federal rights, to mention just a few trouble spots. Arranged alphabetically for ease of use by students at all levels, the set will also appeal to general readers searching for explanations and information. Full of battle descriptions and four-color maps, the books are excellent military history. ... Read more
While the Yankees and the Confederates fought a ruthless civil war in the United States, Britain and the northern states waged a 'war in anticipation' as British North America waited and wondered whether the federal army of the United States would invade. Robin Winks's classic study is a dramatic examination of the impact of the American Civil War on Canada, especially on the movement toward Confederation. From the Chesapeake incident off the coast of Nova Scotia, through the St Albans Raid from Quebec into Vermont, to the reinforcing of garrisons across British North America in response to the Trent Affair, "The Civil War Years" ranges across the early Canadian landscape. It offers an in-depth survey of Canadian public opinion on the war, the role of Confederate sympathizers in Canada, and the number of Canadians enlisted in the armies of the North and South. The second edition includes a new introduction that provides an overview of Civil War studies since the book's original publication in 1960. "The Civil War Years" remains a valuable contribution to Canadian history, the history of Canadian-American and Anglo-American relations, and Civil War studies.

This collection of essays represents the best recent history written on Civil War activity in Arkansas. It illuminates the complexity of such issues as guerrilla warfare, Union army policies, and the struggles between white and black civilians and soldiers, and also shows that the war years were a time of great change and personal conflict for the citizens of the state, despite the absence of "great" battles or armies. All the essays, which have been previously published in scholarly journals, have been revised to reflect recent scholarship in the field. Each selection explores a military or social dimension of the war that has been largely ignored or which is unique to the war in Arkansas -- gristmill destruction, military farm colonies, nitre mining operations, mountain clan skirmishes, federal plantation experiments, and racial atrocities and reprisals. Together, the essays provoke thought on the character and cost of the war away from the great battlefields and suggest the pervasive change wrought by its

This book delivers a fresh, personal, eyewitness account of America's most divisive war from the men and women who experienced it. Amidst the many Civil War books about military strategy, Lincoln, the great generals, and infamous battles, lies a wealth of undiscovered personal stories from the men and women who actually lived during what is arguably America's most fascinating war. Prize-winning journalist C. Brian Kelly has collected the most riveting letters, diaries, eyewitness accounts, and autobiographies, weaving in pertinent historical background to create a factually compelling human interest lens of the Civil War.Readers will discover, for example, that Ulysses S. Grant wrote as he approached his first battle, of his "heart... getting higher and higher until it felt to me as though it was in my throat." It seems the man who eventually defeated the Confederacy was as human as the rest of us.
