On top of this load was perched the pretty little girl. The boy rode a wild young burro. The fine looking brave possessed the only saddle and bridle in his outfit, the others riding with blanket and hakemore. As my volcanic companion still rumbled defiance, I did not regret the departure of the Indians. After allowing them an hour's start we followed in their tracks--presumably they would lead to fresh water and no other trail was in evidence. The body of water which had seemed to bar our advance the preceding evening we found to be merely the lower end of the Laguna Salada and easily fordable. As our course for the day was northwest and west we had every opportunity to observe this most strange lake. It reaches out into the barren desert for eight or nine leagues with a width of from one hundred to several hundred metres. According to Indian report, it gains depth, width and saltiness from the overflows of the Hardy; when there has been no rain storm and no recent overflow, it is almost drinkable; at other times, lured to its shores by thirst, men have died miserable deaths. Shortly after fording the Laguna Salada I caught sight of a pair of nice looking young porkers rooting along the shore. Yet, according to history, California's Governor John Bigler sent out Captain Harry Love and his state rangers with orders to bring back the outlaw. Captain Love brought back a head, ensconced in a keg of brandy to preserve it, which he claimed to be that of Joaquin, but others dispute this. Because of the lack of police and court records, the true story of Joaquin Murrieta may never be known. Author Alton Pryor gives the reader enough information that they, themselves, can ultimately decide whether Joaquin was a true Mexican bandido, or simply the myth of an imaginative gold rush newspaper reporter. For the first time on one CD, the two CALIFORNIA SUITE versions as recorded by Mel Tormé with the orchestras conducted by Hal Mooney (Capitol, 1949) and Marty Paich (Bethlehem, 1957). An historic musical event, reissued in a very special package, including two different and comprehensive booklets full of memorabilia, photos and lyrics. "California Suite" was originally a 30-minute lyrical and musical narrative composed and dedicated by Mel Tormé to the Golden State. Mel spent six months writing the piece, which was recorded in 1949 by Capitol Records, and released the following year with notable critical acclaim, albeit with some qualifications about its cohesiveness and clarity. Encouraged by fans and musicians to revisit the concept, eight years later he recorded, this time for Bethlehem, a revitalized, extended version arranged and conducted by Marty Paich, with much more jazz influence than was evident in the original recording. Some stereotypical touches remained, but Paich's real genius exploded like a bombshell in the studios. This is the first time both versions have been compiled in an individual set. It is proof of Tormé's many-faceted ability as a singer and composer, and it also confirmed Paich's pre-eminence as a progressive arranger among his contemporaries. Minimize

In terms of recording, California lagged far behind the south, southwest and major media centers like Chicago and New York, where labels largely ignored the regions cowboy and hillbilly artists. The popular Crockett Family, based initially in Fresno, had recorded for Brunswick, and the San Francisco Bay area institution Harry Haywire Mac McClintock record prolifically for Victor beginning in 1928. There were others including Len Nash - featured here - who were in the studios prior to the Stock Market crash of 1929. This collection gathers recordings by several other early California groups, les heralded and less obviously influential, but no less interesting.
