This is the new 3rd edition of Angus Baxter's classic In Search of Your Canadian Roots, now brought up to date with revised listings of finding-aids, record repositories, and e-mail and web site addresses. Handled with the acumen we have come to expect of Canada's leading genealogist, it first discusses the great migrations of Scots, Irish, English, Germans, Huguenots, Ukrainians, and Jews to Canada; describes the national archives in Ottawa, with its holdings of censuses, parish registers, naturalization records, land and homestead records, military records, and passenger lists; summarizes the holdings of the LDS Church relating to Canada; and explores the vast nationwide record sources such as census records and church registers. Next it provides a province-by-province survey of genealogical sources--in effect, a step-by-step guide to the records and record repositories in each of the ten provinces and the Yukon and Northwest territories. This core section gives a detailed breakdown--by province and territory--of vital records, wills, land records, censuses, church records, newspapers, and books, then lists libraries, societies, and archives and their major holdings and ongoing projects. For both beginners and experienced researchers alike, the new 3rd edition of In Search of Your Canadian Roots gives common-sense tips on where to begin your research, how to work backward in time from the known to the unknown, how to test your facts and avoid common mistakes, and, ultimately, how to create a family tree. Whether your family has been in Canada for centuries or only several generations, this superb book will show you how to trace your Canadian roots and have fun doing it.

Introduction from the Author When I began my college search
... Read more
Introduction from the Author When I began my college search, the top two qualities for my ideal school were: first, to be located in a big city; and second, to have a journalism program. Needless to say, these aren’t the same things that other students look for, and I realize now that these factors are not the most important things about Emerson College (especially because I switched from journalism to writing, literature, and publishing before even taking a journalism class). The qualities about Emerson that have turned out to be the most important and worthwhile parts of the school are the students that I met here, the professors who became my friends and have helped me immeasurably, and the opportunities to get experience in my desired career field. These are the qualities about Emerson that make it one-of-a-kind, and make its students proud of their years spent here. Emerson is changing and growing. The school is relocating the dorms from one side of the Boston Common to the other. Emerson is building new facilities for growing classes, and most importantly, Emerson is preparing its students for a changing job market. The school has begun increasing its admission standards and breadth of offered classes. This is a great time to begin school at Emerson. As the College continues to grow, the opportunities for learning and grabbing internships grow as well. If you’ve gotten this far in your college search, you probably already know that Emerson is a communications and performing arts school. You probably also know that it has limited majors, but those that it does have are very specialized, and definitely cool. The next thing you should be researching is something a lot more subjective. Is Emerson going to provide you with the best college experience—and by that I mean an academically, socially, culturally, and financially sound experience—that you can get? Hopefully the following pages will help you determine that. Jordan Ross, Author Emerson College

Goguryeo tomb murals, now a registered UNESCO World Heritage, are an important part of Korea s cultural heritage and an historic record of the kingdom, which was one of the most powerful states in Northeast Asia 2000 years ago. The murals, which were excavated from the late third to seventh centuries in areas of Pyeongyang and Anak in North Korea and Ji'an in China, not only reflect the Goguryeo people's view on the world, the universe, and afterlife but also provide important insights into their daily life. Through this book, readers can comprehend characteristics of Goguryeo culture depicted in the Goguryeo tomb murals: individuality based on diversity, universality with originality, and openness with selectivity.

With enthusiasm and sincerity biologist Soren Bondrup-Nielsen recalls his experience as a graduate student in the 1970s researching the Boreal Owl in northern Ontario and Alberta. After receiving his B.Sc. in the spring of 1974, Bondrup-Nielsen travels by train to Kapuskasing to begin his study of this tiny, elusive species, cousin to the Tengmalm’s Owl of Scandinavia. Though initially dissuaded by his supervisor, the author sets about recording the owl’s call and locating individual territories. On cross-country skis, pulling a toboggan of supplies, Bondrup-Nielsen begins his first field season with reason for optimism, recording two distinct calls and being struck in the head by a male Boreal within his first week. After repairing to the nearby logging camp (Camp 86) where the food is plentiful and the beds much warmer than his tent, Bondrup-Nielsen continues his research to the great amusement of the cutting crew and camp staff. Taking the first photos of the owls, learning to differentiate between male and female calls, and observing mating behaviour, he finishes the season having located ten males on territories. In subsequent field seasons, Bondrup-Nielsen completes his graduate research. The book details his experimental tracking and recording methods, including telemetry, homemade traps, and a recording device fashioned out of an alarm clock, some tinfoil and a sewing needle. Bondrup-Nielsen’s inquiring mind and passion for both winter and the outdoors bring an infectious sense of adventure to his fieldwork. His studies are punctuated by close encounters with coyotes, bears and a moose, glimpses of the Aurora Borealis, first love and self-discovery. With some of the author’s original journal entries, notes and sketches, A Sound Like Water Dripping captures the beginning of what continues to be a committed and inspiring dedication to the study of ecology. “Owls seem to hold a fascination for just about everyone,” says Bondrup-Nielsen. “Maybe it’s their appearance: We see ourselves reflected in their faces. Their beaks resemble our noses and their big eyes, similar to ours, look forward, with eyelids that close from above, unlike other birds whose eyelids close from below. They seem to represent wisdom rather than reminding us of the fierce predators that they are. Owls also have ghost-like qualities, flying on silent wings, active mainly at night. In some cultures, owls are harbingers of death. In any case, there’s something magical about them. I studied the Boreal Owl in northern Ontario and Alberta from 1974 to 1976, and am still approached by naturalist societies with invitations to talk about this small northern owl so few people have ever seen. In my teaching, as well, when I get a chance to talk about my research on owls the whole class listens intently. Thus, after I had finished my first book, Winter on Diamond, I felt a longing for the solitary but exciting experience of disappearing into my head again, this time to relive my discovery of the Boreal Owl.”

The stories in this book are my experiences recovering gold in the Philippines over a five-year period that started with a simple trip to Manila, at the request of a Mexican businessman, to assist with a gold transaction he had put together with a Filipino businessman. During those years, often armed with an M16 machine gun, I managed to explore the whole Philippine archipelago from Aparri at the top of northern Luzon to Zamboanga in southern Mindanao. My mode of travel varied from a stainless steel jeep to flying with ex Air America pilots to hidden locations in fixed wing aircraft and military helicopters as well as pleasure cruiser around the seaways. I was often in the Cagayan Valley, the Cordillera Central and Sierra Madre Mountains on foot, searching for and recovering treasure sites, long hidden in the jungles and caves along the Aurora and Isabela coastlines. This applies also to the mountains of Mindanao. I had many exciting adventures and some downright dangerous, often coming under fire from opposition groups. This opposition came not only from other treasure hunters but included the police, military, and ex CIA operatives (mercenaries) who had their own private agendas and members of Japanese groups who were watching over some of the remaining major sites. During those five years I was to meet and become friends with Robert (Bob) Curtis. I visited his home in Nevada where I was invited to examine many of the thousands of documents in his possession concerning Marcos and his gold transactions. I was able to see various engineering drawings of the sites Curtis opened for Marcos that resulted in the recovery of 600,000 tons of gold for Marcos. This was just the beginning as Marcos recovered 13 of the 175 recorded sites. At the time of writing this book, the CIA and a number of private groups are still working on several recoveries. This book is my attempt to show the Yamashita Gold story from the other side. Review of the Book Must reading for anyone interested in gold hunting or the secret world of goldtrading! Like a great adventure novel, it's packed with gripping, page-turning adventures, murders, high-speed chases, and treachery at every turn. But it's all true. Tom Cyran is one of those rare authors who has lived through every one of these high adventures, with his feet on the ground in the Philippine jungles. He knows all the power-players, from the Marcoses and the army generals, to the New Peoples Army, the Moslem rebels, and aboriginal villagers who have discovered vast hoards of Japanese war loot from World War II. Tom's job was to see if the gold was real, then bring in buyer's who could get the gold into the world market. Go with him, and you're guaranteed a terrific read! Sterling Seagrave, bestselling author of GOLD WARRIORS and THE MARCOS DYNASTY.

This two-volume slipcased publication is produced on the occasion of American artist Matthew Day Jackson's 2010 exhibitions at Peter Blum's two New York galleries. The first volume, The Tomb, In Search of, records one of the artist's most powerful works: a sculpture of eight astronaut pallbearers (rendered from scraps of wood and plastic) carrying a life-size figure enshrined in a glass case, titled "The Tomb." Based on a fifteenth-century sculpture by Antoine Le Moiturier, "The Tomb" carries echoes of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, Day Jackson's own mortality and Paul Thek's 1967 "Tomb." In Search of, the Film is based upon the eponymous 1970s TV series hosted by Leonard Nimoy, which investigated paranormal phenomena. Day Jackson's video looks at varieties of anthropomorphism in our view of other life forms, the allegories of artists' journeys and the transmission of history through artifacts.

After landing, he proceeded to Shandong's then-capital, Qingzhou, where he remained for a year translating and editing the scriptures he had collected. His work is not only one of the world's greatest travel books, but is filled with invaluable accounts of early Buddhism, and the geography and history of numerous countries along the so-called Silk Roads at the turn of the 5th century AD. ... Read more
Members of adoption triangles -- adoptees, birthparents, and adopting parents -- must struggle with difficult and sometimes heartrending issues. Should adopted children be enabled to trace their biological parents? Does the individual's right to self-discovery outweigh another's wish for confidentiality? In this thoughtful book, sociologist Katarina Wegar offers a new perspective on adoption and the search debate, placing them within a social context. She argues that Americans who are embroiled in adoption controversies have failed to understand how much the debate, adoption research, and the experience of adoption itself are affected by persistent social beliefs that adopted children are different from and somehow inferior to children reared by their biological families.Wegar begins by considering the historical and legal development of adoption and of sealed-records policies, showing how kinship ideology, the helping professions, and gender issues intersect to frame adoption policies and the ongoing debate. Drawing on articles in social work and mental health journals, activist newsletters, and autobiographies by search activists, as well as on popular images of adoption portrayed in talk shows and other media, she analyzes the rhetoric to reveal the unconscious biases that exist. She concludes with a discussion of ways in which adoption reformers can avoid perpetuating harmful and confining images of those who participate in adoption.

You are the first to arrive at the scene. You secure the area, and record what the human eye can see so far. You begin your search. You come across what appears to be physical evidence, and proceed to carefully document, package, and transport it to the lab. You fill out the routine paperwork, and feel secure in the knowledge that you have done everything possible to uncover every piece of crucial evidence - but have you?Co-authored by two seasoned forensic professionals, the Illustrated Guide to Crime Scene Investigation is an essential reference that explains the protocols used in successful crime scene investigation. It presents straightforward and scientifically supported procedures in a vivid pictorial format that explain how to accurately and efficiently document what has been left behind at the scene of a crime. This comprehensive resource presents the concept of SCRIPT: the Searching for and Collection of, Recording, Initializing, Packaging, and Transporting of physical evidence from the scene of a forensic inquiry to a forensic laboratory. It outlines this methodology by providing step-by-step instructions, over 400 photographs, other illustrations, and short narrative segments that guide you through crime scene investigations involving burglary, homicide, robbery, sex crime, and arson or explosion. If you want to be confident that you have uncovered and carefully processed every bit of potential physical evidence on the scene, then the Illustrated Guide to Crime Scene Investigation is the one reference to have with you every time.

In The Search for the Codex Cardona, Arnold J. Bauer tells the story of his experiences on the trail of a cultural treasure, a Mexican “painted book” that first came into public view at Sotheby’s auction house in London in 1982, nearly four hundred years after it was presumably made by Mexican artists and scribes. On folios of amate paper, the Codex includes two oversized maps and 300 painted illustrations accompanied by text in sixteenth-century paleography. The Codex relates the trajectory of the Nahua people to the founding of the capital of Tenochtitlán and then focuses on the consequences of the Spanish conquest up to the 1550s. If authentic, the Codex Cardona is an invaluable record of early Mexico. Yet there is no clear evidence of its origin, what happened to it after 1560, or even where it is today, after its last known appearance at Christie’s auction house in New York in 1998.Bauer first saw the Codex Cardona in 1985 in the Crocker Nuclear Laboratory at the University of California, Davis, where scholars from Stanford and the University of California were attempting to establish its authenticity. Allowed to gently lift a few pages of this ancient treasure, Bauer was hooked. By 1986, the Codex had again disappeared from public view. Bauer’s curiosity about the Codex and its whereabouts led him down many forking paths—from California to Seville and Mexico City, to the Firestone Library in Princeton, to the Getty Museum in Los Angeles and Christie’s in New York—and it brought him in contact with an international cast of curators, agents, charlatans, and erudite book dealers. The Search for the Codex Cardona is a mystery that touches on issues of cultural patrimony, the workings of the rare books and manuscripts trade, the uncertainty of archives and evidence, and the ephemerality of the past and its remains.

Although rooted in noble aims, the United Nations has a long history of failing to solve the world's most critical problems—such as war, terrorism, genocide, poverty and pandemics. Despite this poor track record, the U.N. has managed to increase its budgets and expand its mandate and activities into new areas in which it has little expertise. Billions of hard-earned American tax dollars are invested in the U.N each year, but U.S. efforts to improve the effectiveness of the organization seemingly have little effect. This book discusses the many weaknesses and failings of the current U.N. system and offers practical solutions for reform. The group of U.N. experts gathered here discuss a range of issues addressed by the U.N., including peace and security, international law, human rights, economic development, and transnational concerns like health and the environment. They suggest ways to improve efforts to work within the U.N. framework to address critical international problems and ways to work outside of it when the U.N. proves to be a poor vehicle. In some cases, they propose alternative multilateral efforts to address problems for which the U.N. is uniquely unsuited.Published in cooperations wtih the Heritage Foundation.

The Search is neither predominately scholarly, historical, nor inspirational. Rather, it is a book that seeks to understand why Jesus said what he said and did what he did in light of the fact that he was not only a loyal Galilean Jew but he was also a loyal Roman subject, who was probably educated in Greco-Roman influenced schools, who probably worked under the authority of Roman administrators, who ministered under the protection of Roman officials, and who died as a enemy of Rome as mandated by Roman law.The book is not intended to present Jesus in any lesser light than that of deity. Yet, within the context of known Greco-Roman history, customs, philosophies, and manners of the time in which Jesus lived and ministered. It attempts to show under what circumstances his ministry and popularity grew and flourished in Roman Mare Nostrum and then floundered. The Search is historical in that it portrays the life of Jesus as it was in Roman Mare Nostrum East. It is scholarly in that it confirms each Gospel recorded event with non-biblical authenticating documentation. It is inspirational in that it assumes that the Gospel records are the most accurate records available about the life of Jesus and that the word and deeds recorded in the Gospel narratives have been preserved for two millennia because they were the narratives that God felt would be most spiritually beneficial to this Current generation. This book will attempt to discover Jesus' life by filling in the empty center between birth and death by reaching beyond the bare bones skeleton of historical Jesus and alighting upon the fully developed historical epic of Jesus-the loyal Jewish Roman subject of Roman Mare Nostrum East.

Introduction from the Author Not long ago, I flipped through college guidebooks and viewbooks trying to gain a better understanding of what different schools had to offer. I kept thinking that there might be one perfect school for me, but I later realized it wasn’t about finding the perfect school. It was about finding the school that allowed me to be who I was, and to shape me into whom I want to become. I did not consider Bowdoin College until near the end of my college search because of its small size, unassuming reputation, and rural location. However, I’m glad it came into my radar because had it not, I would have never discovered how supportive teachers, friends with similar dreams, and encouraging coaches and staff drive me to become a better learner, a better athlete, a better leader, and most importantly, a better person. Eventually, I saw Bowdoin for everything it had to offer. Bowdoin offers excellent resources for a school of its 1600 student body size. The faculty, administration, and staff are warm, friendly, and encouraging. They put students wishes and desires as their priorities. They serve as the students guide and advocate. Bowdoin’s faculty put teaching first and research second. They have designated office hours, but will work with students on an individual basis. The professors are experts in their field, and often get invited to speak at prestigious universities. The Career Planning Center on campus offers databases that schools of much greater size barely offer and works on pioneering consortiums with other reputable institutions to give its students the resources to find the best internships, fellowships, and jobs. The best thing about Bowdoin is the warm and encouraging student body. The closeness this provides is an appeal over larger institutions. Although half of students on campus graduated from private schools, level-headedness remains the standard. Studying is done for the sake of learning, and not out of competition with your peers. It’s all about pushing yourself to do your best at Bowdoin. Interesting, intellectual conversations and passionate debates about politics, sports, philosophy, and life routinely fill the dining halls, union, and dorms. Everyone brings a unique ability and interest in the arts, music, writing, sports, community service, and more—with enthusiasm in all they do. Their zest for life energizes campus. Bowdoin is an amazing place to spend four years. What distinguishes the school is its ability to empower Bowdoin students to face any challenge head on, to take risks, and to get the sense that they are part of a bigger picture. This place is an ideal choice for any high school senior to spend their undergraduate years as they transition from adolescence to adulthood. Derrick Wong, Author Bowdoin College

Like any profound technological breakthrough, the advent of sound recording ushered in a period of explosive and imaginative experimentation, growth and competition. Between the commercial debut of Edison's “talking machine” in 1889 and the first commercial radio broadcast three decades later, the recording industry was uncharted territory in terms of both technology and content. This history of the earliest years of sound recording—the time between the phonograph's appearance and the licensing of commercial radio—examines a newly created technology and industry in search of itself. It follows the story from the earliest efforts to capture sound, to the fight among wire, cylinder and disk recordings for primacy in the market, to the growth and development of musical genres, record companies and business practices that remain current today. The work chronicles the people, events and developments that turned a novel, expensive idea into a highly marketable commodity. Two appendices provide extensive lists of popular genre and ethnic recordings made between 1889 and 1919. A bibliography and index accompany the text.

Its completion today is the fruit of that search and has been facilitated by the kindness of many people, to all of whom my thanks are due. They go in the first place to the history department of Columbia University for the SchiflE Fellowship which made possible much of the necessary research and very specially to Professor Carlton J. H. Hayes and Professor John A. Krout under whose guidance this study has been written. To librarians and assistants in many eastern libraries, particularly the Manuscript Division of the Library of Congress, the Boston Athenaeum, the American Philosophical Society, the Historical Society of Pennsylvania and the John Carter Brown Library in Providence, where Mr. Lawrence Wroth has been exceptionally kind, I am indebted for valuable aid in finding rare and forgotten material and for clues to still further treasures. I am likewise indebted to the descendants of the French revolutionary exiles, especially Miss Elizabeth Keating, for a welcome of the Old World in its grace and of the New World in its warmth, and for permission to see and use their family re cords. Miss Louise Beaman, Mrs. Avery Claflin and Miss Beulah Parker have given me friendly and patient assistance in the tedious tasks of typing, translating and editing, Mrs. Ernest Tracy in the difficult one of proofreading they all deserve my sincere thanks. Last but by no means least I wish to express my gratitude to Professor Gilbert Chinard of Princeton University for stimulating and generous assistance and for the opportunity to publish this study under the aus pices of the Institut Frangais de Washington. This book in essence is a personal search for family history, and a record of the same. In 1485, William Gilpin was killed in the Battle of Bosworth Field whilst fighting alongside his king, Richard III. The search also unearthed some other interesting facts, such as the loss of Kentmere Hall by the Gilpin family as a consequence of their involvement in the English Civil War in the seventeenth century, and a possible association with Ireland as a direct result. At the same time the imprisonment of Captain Thomas Gilpin of Warborough for his refusal to continue fighting in Cromwell's army after becoming a Quaker. The son of the above Thomas, Joseph Gilpin, and his wife Hannah, left England for a new life in America sometime after the Civil War. One of Joseph and Hannah's descendants was an aid to George Washington. And there is a connection between the Gilpin and the Washington families with the marriage of a William Gilpin and Elizabeth Washington. There is also recorded an interesting encounter between one of Joseph and Hannah's descendants and Abraham Lincoln. My search also unearthed a family secret, the murder of poisoning of my own great-grandfather, James Gilpin. To add a little local interest, three legends associated with the Kentmere Valley have been added, including the story of the Kentmere Giant. Along with some more general history associated with the search.

With demands on leaders at an all-time high and executive tenure at a record low, executive search consulting is positioned to gain unprecedented influence over who makes it to the leadership table and who doesn't. But little has been known about this powerful, invisible force that operates at the epicenter of the war for senior talent and global competitiveness, until now. In this rich expose, Joseph McCool pulls back the curtain to reveal how senior management recruiters influence compensation, workplace diversity, high profile CEO succession, organizational performance, culture, profits, and the very definition of leadership. He trains his investigative journalist's eye on the growing influence of this elite band of management consultants to expose the recruitment practices and exploits of some of the country's leading businesses-from Avery Denison and the Campbell Soup Company to Disney. Deciding Who Leads makes a hard-line business case for taking control of the executive recruitment and hiring process, laying out the new leadership mandate, best practices for recruiting senior talent, strategic priorities for hiring organizations, and tactical advice for making the most of executive leadership recruiting and management succession.

"A Journey in Search of Korea's Beauty" was a yearlong project that Bae Yong Joon undertook in order to learn more about traditional Korean culture from the unfledged yet earnest point of view of one Korean, and to record in a down-to- earth way what he learned and felt in the process. He chose 13 subjects he has been interested in out of the traditional Korean culture and folded into six categories. This book is intended not only for foreign readers who would like to learn more about traditional Korean culture but do not have easy access to it, but also for Korean readers as well who are in search of this country's beauty.

This book examines one of the most intriguing figures in the religious life of the ancient Mediterranean world, the Phrygian Mother Goddess, known to the Greeks and Romans as Cybele or Magna Mater, the Great Mother. Her cult was particularly prominent in central Anatolia (modern Turkey), and spread from there through the Greek and Roman world. She was an enormously popular figure, attracting devotion from common people and potentates alike. This book is the first comprehensive assembly and discussion of the entire extant evidence concerning the worship of the Phrygian Mother Goddess, from her earliest appearance in the prehistoric record to the early centuries of the Roman Empire.Lynn E. Roller presents and analyzes literary, historiographic, and archaeological data with equal acuity and flair. While previous studies have tended to emphasize the more outrageous aspects of the Mother Goddess's cult, such as her orgiastic rituals and the eunuch priests who attended her, this book places a special focus on Cybele's position in Anatolia and the ways in which the identity of the goddess changed as her cult was transmitted to Greece and Rome. Roller gives a detailed account of the growth, spread, and evolution of her cult, her ceremonies, and her meaning for her adherents. This book will introduce students of Classical antiquity to many aspects of the Great Mother which have been previously unexamined, and will interest anyone who has ever been piqued by curiosity about the Mother Goddess of the ancient Western world.

One day in 1698, Robert Pyle of Pennsylvania decided to buy a black slave. The next night he dreamed of a steep ladder to heaven that he felt he could not climb because he carried a black pot. In the dream, a man told him the ladder was the light of Jesus Christ and would bear any whose faith held strong; otherwise, the climber would fall. Pyle woke that morning positive that he should eschew slaves and slavery, having equated the pot with the slave he wished to buy. In fact, so acutely did this dream awaken him to his sins that he became a dynamic advocate of liberation. This dream literally changed his outlook and his life.Teach Me Dreams delves into the dream world of ordinary Americans and finds that as their self-perception increased, transforming them on a personal level, so did a revolutionary spirit that wrought momentous political changes. Mechal Sobel considers dreams recorded in the life narratives of 100 people, revealing the America of the Revolutionary Era to have been a truly dream-infused culture in which analysis of dreams was encouraged, and subsequent personal reevaluation was striking. Sobel uses a wealth of information--letters, diaries, and over 200 published autobiographies from a wide range of "ordinary" people; black, white, male, female. In these accounts, many previously neglected by historians, dreamers explain how their nighttime adventures opened their eyes to aspects of themselves, or unveiled new paths they should take both personally and politically. Such paths often led them to challenge those in power.Charting the widely dreamed of opposition between blacks and whites, men and women, Sobel offers astounding new insights into how early Americans understood their lives. Her analysis of the dreams and lives of ordinary Revolutionary-Era people demonstrates links between dreaming, self reevaluation, and participation in the radically changing politics of the time. This book will appeal to specialists in the fields of American and African-American history, and anyone interested in dreams and self-development.

While many books have been written about Bertrand Russell's philosophy and some on his logic, I. Grattan-Guinness has written the first comprehensive history of the mathematical background, content, and impact of the mathematical logic and philosophy of mathematics that Russell developed with A. N. Whitehead in their Principia mathematica (1910-1913).This definitive history of a critical period in mathematics includes detailed accounts of the two principal influences upon Russell around 1900: the set theory of Cantor and the mathematical logic of Peano and his followers. Substantial surveys are provided of many related topics and figures of the late nineteenth century: the foundations of mathematical analysis under Weierstrass; the creation of algebraic logic by De Morgan, Boole, Peirce, Schröder, and Jevons; the contributions of Dedekind and Frege; the phenomenology of Husserl; and the proof theory of Hilbert. The many-sided story of the reception is recorded up to 1940, including the rise of logic in Poland and the impact on Vienna Circle philosophers Carnap and Gödel. A strong American theme runs though the story, beginning with the mathematician E. H. Moore and the philosopher Josiah Royce, and stretching through the emergence of Church and Quine, and the 1930s immigration of Carnap and GödeI.Grattan-Guinness draws on around fifty manuscript collections, including the Russell Archives, as well as many original reviews. The bibliography comprises around 1,900 items, bringing to light a wealth of primary materials.Written for mathematicians, logicians, historians, and philosophers--especially those interested in the historical interaction between these disciplines--this authoritative account tells an important story from its most neglected point of view. Whitehead and Russell hoped to show that (much of) mathematics was expressible within their logic; they failed in various ways, but no definitive alternative position emerged then or since.

According to the theory of relativity, we are constantly bathed in gravitational radiation. When stars explode or collide, a portion of their mass becomes energy that disturbs the very fabric of the space-time continuum like ripples in a pond. But proving the existence of these waves has been difficult; the cosmic shudders are so weak that only the most sensitive instruments can be expected to observe them directly. Fifteen times during the last thirty years scientists have claimed to have detected gravitational waves, but so far none of those claims have survived the scrutiny of the scientific community. Gravity's Shadow chronicles the forty-year effort to detect gravitational waves, while exploring the meaning of scientific knowledge and the nature of expertise.Gravitational wave detection involves recording the collisions, explosions, and trembling of stars and black holes by evaluating the smallest changes ever measured. Because gravitational waves are so faint, their detection will come not in an exuberant moment of discovery but through a chain of inference; for forty years, scientists have debated whether there is anything to detect and whether it has yet been detected. Sociologist Harry Collins has been tracking the progress of this research since 1972, interviewing key scientists and delineating the social process of the science of gravitational waves.Engagingly written and authoritatively comprehensive, Gravity's Shadow explores the people, institutions, and government organizations involved in the detection of gravitational waves. This sociological history will prove essential not only to sociologists and historians of science but to scientists themselves. (20041015)
