This is the first solo photo book by Australian photographer Paul Freeman. 'Blue' magazine's favorite photographer for many years, Freeman is also known for authoring the best-selling biography of Ian Roberts ('Ian Roberts: Finding Out', Random House, Australia 1997) 'Bondi Classic' stands out in a publishing genre filled, of late, with thoughtless compilations. It's a sumptuous 240-page hardbound, with beautiful production values and design, and exquisite photography. It's the first in a self-published series of 'coffee table' collectibles by Freeman's. A tribute to the Australian hero, Bondi Classic responds to a strong international demand for a book of Freeman's art nude portraiture. With remarkable talent Freeman gives us a sensual yet respectful look at a vast and varied array of Aussie men, including some of Australia's top actors, models, sports stars and Olympians. (Captured champion iron men, Princess Diana's personal trainer, mister Australia body building champions, actors from international theatre and film, television soap heart-throbs, top pro footballers, Olympic boxers, divers and wrestlers, and an Australian Man Of The Year!) Using classic and European religious art references, often within an ancient and moody Sydney coastal environment, Bondi Classic takes us on an epic of unabashed male physicality. Maintaining a reverential distance from his subjects, Freeman's story revels in the paradoxes of masculinity. His subjects are strong yet sensual, courageous while provocative, violent and divinely innocent. Director of the internationally- acclaimed Sydney Festival, Brett Sheehy, gave the book a rave review when he launched it in Sydney in February 2004. Sheehy referred to Freeman as a new Bruce Weber, as well as Australia's own Renaissance man.

A guide to classic English men's fashion, for would-be dandies everywhere.Today, classic English tailoring is admired worldwide, and rightly so. There is nothing quite like a pair of well-polished brogues, a tailored dinner jacket, or even freshly laundered striped cotton pajamas. And when it comes to tailoring, there is nobody quite like Jeremy Hackett. Hackett takes us on a grand tour of the world of Bentleys and polo, bicycles and picnics, bow ties and Sussex spaniels. Along the way, he muses on sartorial codes: why plus twos beat plus fours, the pros and cons of cuff-links, the art of monogramming, how one should dress for a shooting party, and how to get that bow tie looking "just so." Brimming with anecdotes and observations as sharp as his suits—as well as nostalgia for a time when a man knew how to dress for an occasion—this is a book for those who appreciate the finer things in life. 136 illustrations and photographs, 49 in color

This is the story of my rent journey to Selma Alabama with my father and my son. We went to say our final farewell to a half brother I never knew. My brother had a long career of military service overseas and had only recently returned to Selma near the end of his life. I had never been to Selma before, but I was interested to see my father's hometown. I expected to meet my family and introduce my son to a different part of the country. What I did not expect was to be overwhelmed and excited by seeing a birthplace of the Civil Rights Movement. My son and I saw the Edmund Pettus Bridge where hundreds of marchers crossed on their way to obtain voting rights in the state capitol of Montgomery. The marchers had been beaten and turned back from the bridge until Dr. martin Luther King arrived and President Johnson called in the National Guard to protect the people. Dr. King then lead a lager and determined group across the bridge and on the march to Montgomery in 1965. My son recognized the great importance of this bridge with a child's clear view. This is our story.

Every family has its own story to tell. Be it tragic, heartbreaking, or triumphant, each tale forms part of a clan's history and defines its identity. Author John Schissler, Jr. started with an autobiographical essay in his history class in 1964, but didn't really give it much thought. Recently, through his brother's urging, he felt somewhat obliged to reveal their storied past. After a painstaking research, he now comes up with a book that narrates the fascinating history of his family entitled Passage: The Making of an American Family. What started as a school requirement now developed into a detailed memoir of a family's story that impacts the lives of many. Passage chronicles the humble beginnings of John Schissler's family and its struggles to weather the storms of life. Thinking he already had the skeleton of the story, Schissler looked for ways to make the pieces of the tale fall into place. Through the help of his parents, relatives, and friends, he looked for connections, photos, and other evidences to corroborate the existing story he already had. Author Schissler traces his family's roots and finds out that their relatives came from Donaueschingen. Germany, where there are two streams that come together to form the source of the Donau (Danube) river. He believes it is only fitting that his family, who were Donauschwaben, eventually ended up in Wisconsin, which in Native American language means "gathering" or "meeting of the waters."Passage is not merely a story of a clan who survived the horrors of the world war against the innocent; it also serves as a memorial to all the forgotten souls and unsung heroes murdered by Stalin, victims of the "final solution", and other nameless ones who were dumped indiscriminately into mass graves.Accompany John Schissler, Jr. as he revisits family's and his own unforgettable voyage to survival in this remarkable, imagery-filled memoir. Follow their exploits as they sought refuge in a foreign soil that embraced them as if they were its own. Join them as they celebrate diversity in their newfound land, their new home called Amerca. Witness the bonds they formed, the friendships and families they built, the failures that brought forth success, and life's challenges that made them what they are today.According to author Schissler, "War crimes don't necessarily end with the war. This is a true story about an ordinary, World War II European family, who was forced to embark on an extraordinary odyssey fraught with danger, disease, and death to reach the shores of the 'Promised Land'. Shot at by British planes, imprisoned by the Russians, and forced to work in the peat bogs of East Germany, we finally escaped to West Germany where we found temporary asylem until we completed our pilgrimage to Ellis Island. The saga continues with my family's physical, emotional, and social struggles to get a piece of that American Dream and our eventual assimilatinon into that cultural diversity of that melting pot which is America."

Lars Sjöberg has made it his life's work to understand and preserve the Swedish manor houses of the 17th and 18th centuries. Here, exquisitely photographed by Ingalill Snitt, are the eight houses (and one church) that he has acquired over more than 40 years. The book focuses on Sjöberg's first, most complex project: the manor of Regnaholm. Unoccupied for about 40 years when Sjöberg arrived in 1966, it allowed him to experiment with interior decoration and refurnishing, copying old furniture, reweaving, and reprinting old fabric patterns. His other projects include Ekensberg, a three-story Italianate villa near Lake Mälaren, built in 1788-90, and Salaholm in Västergötland with a garden laid out in the first half of the 17th century. Odenslunda, a small manor from the 1770s with a panelled exterior and a säteritak or manor-house roof, is his family home, while Sörby, a scaled-down early 17th-century manor house, was reproduced in its entirety for an exhibition in Stockholm. Full of insight and inspiration, this is a deeply personal summary of everything Lars Sjöberg has learned in his years of working and living with classic Swedish interiors.

From the celebrated author of The English Patient and In the Skin of a Lion comes a remarkable new novel of intersecting lives that ranges across continents and time. In the 1970s in Northern California, near Gold Rush country, a father and his teenage daughters, Anna and Claire, work their farm with the help of Coop, an enigmatic young man who makes his home with them. Theirs is a makeshift family, until it is riven by an incident of violence—of both hand and heart—that sets fire to the rest of their lives.Divisadero takes us from the city of San Francisco to the raucous backrooms of Nevada’s casinos and eventually to the landscape of south-central France. It is here, outside a small rural village, that Anna becomes immersed in the life and the world of a writer from an earlier time—Lucien Segura. His compelling story, which has its beginnings at the turn of the century, circles around “the raw truth” of Anna’s own life, the one she’s left behind but can never truly leave. And as the narrative moves back and forth in time and place, we discover each of the characters managing to find some foothold in a present rough hewn from the past. Breathtakingly evoked and with unforgettable characters, Divisadero is a multilayered novel about passion, loss, and the unshakable past, about the often discordant demands of family, love, and memory. It is Michael Ondaatje’s most intimate and beautiful novel to date.

New York Times bestselling author Tess Gerritsen knows how to expertly dissect a brilliantly suspenseful story, all the while keeping fascinated readers riveted to her side. By turns darkly enthralling and relentlessly surprising, The Keepsake showcases an author at the peak of her storytelling powers. For untold years, the perfectly preserved mummy had lain forgotten in the dusty basement of Boston’s Crispin Museum. Now its sudden rediscovery by museum staff is both a major coup and an attention-grabbing mystery. Dubbed “Madam X,” the mummy–to all appearances, an ancient Egyptian artifact–seems a ghoulish godsend for the financially struggling institution. But medical examiner Maura Isles soon discovers a macabre message hidden within the corpse–horrifying proof that this “centuries-old” relic is instead a modern-day murder victim. To Maura and Boston homicide detective Jane Rizzoli, the forensic evidence is unmistakable, its implications terrifying. And when the grisly remains of yet another woman are found in the hidden recesses of the museum, it becomes chillingly clear that a maniac is at large–and is now taunting them.Archaeologist Josephine Pulcillo’s blood runs cold when the killer’s cryptic missives are discovered, and her darkest dread becomes real when the carefully preserved corpse of yet a third victim is left in her car like a gruesome offering–or perhaps a ghastly promise of what’s to come. The twisted killer’s familiarity with post-mortem rituals suggests to Maura and Jane that he may have scientific expertise in common with Josephine. Only Josephine knows that her stalker shares a knowledge even more personally terrifying: details of a dark secret she had thought forever buried. Now Maura must summon her own dusty knowledge of ancient death traditions to unravel his twisted endgame. And when Josephine vanishes, Maura and Jane have precious little time to derail the Archaeology Killer before he adds another chilling piece to his monstrous collection. From the Hardcover edition.

This fascinating autobiography recounts the story of the author's long and distinguished life, from his birth in south-east London in 1912 through to a colourful career in the diplomatic service and beyond. Showing considerable promise as a student, K. D. Luke thrived within the educational system and went on to attend Oxford University from 1933 to 1935. An aptitude for languages and a strong desire to travel led to his enrolment with the Malay Education Service; so it was that he found himself teaching at the Malay College at Kuala Kangsar. By 1941, however, World War II caught up with Malaya; the author, along with all other expatriates still resident in the region, was taken as a prisoner of war by the Japanese and forced to work on the infamous Thai-Burma Railway. Reunited with his wartime bride, Phyllis, when hostilities ceased, Kenneth's career blossomed, with headships of two Malay schools followed by various appointments, working for the British Government and later the UN, utilizing his expertise in education all over the world, including the USA, Africa, Laos, Israel and many other areas. The overwhelming impression given in this book is that of the author's humanity in the face of many challenging situations. In particular, his description of his years as a prisoner of war is deeply moving, though never melodramatic. Equally interesting are the insights we are given into the world of international diplomacy, from the personal relationships built up and treasured to the elegant cocktail parties.

'What is the connection, if any, between the author's intentions in (while) writing a work of literature and the truth (acceptability, validity) of interpretive statements about it?' With this question, Gary Isminger introduces a literary debate that has been waged for the past four decades and is addressed by philosophers and literary theorists in Intention and Interpretation. Thirteen essays discuss the role of appeals to the author's intention in interpreting works of literature. A well-known argument by E.D. Hirsch serves as the basic text, in which he defends the appeal to the author's intention against Wimsatt and Beardsley's claim that such an appeal involved 'the intentional fallacy'. The essays, mostly commissioned by the editor, explore the presuppositions and consequences of arguing for the importance of the author's intentions in the way Hirsch does. Connections emerge between this issue and many fundamental issues in metaphysics and the philosophy of mind as well as in aesthetics. The (old) 'New Criticism' and current Post-Structuralism tend to agree in disenfranchising the author, and many people now are disinclined even to consider the alternative. Hirsch demurs, and arguments like his deserve the careful attention, both from critics and sympathizers, that they receive here. Literary scholars and philosophers who are sympathetic to Continental as well as to Anglo-American styles of philosophy are among the contributors. Author note: Gary Iseminger, William H. Laird Professor of Philosophy and the Liberal Arts at Carleton College, has published several other books and many articles in leading philosophical periodicals. He is on the editorial board of the "Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism" and the board of officers of the American Philosophical Association.

Thomas Hobbes was the first great English political philosopher. His work excited intense controversy among his contemporaries and continues to do so in our own time. In this masterly introduction to his work, Bernard Gert provides the first account of Hobbes’s political and moral philosophy that makes it clear why he is regarded as one of the best philosophers of all time in both of these fields. In a succinct and engaging analysis the book illustrates that the commonly accepted view of Hobbes as holding psychological egoism is not only incompatible with his account of human nature but is also incompatible with the moral and political theories that he puts forward. It also explains why Hobbes’s contemporaries did not accept his explicit claim to be providing a natural law account of morality. Gert shows that for Hobbes, civil society is established by a free-gift of their right of nature by the citizens; it does not involve a mutual contract between citizens and sovereign. As injustice involves breaking a contract, the sovereign cannot be unjust; however, the sovereign can be guilty of ingratitude, which is immoral. This distinction between injustice and immorality is part of a sophisticated and nuanced political theory that is in stark contrast to the reading often incorrectly attributed to Hobbes that “might makes right”. It illustrates how Hobbes’s goal of avoiding civil war provides the key to understanding his moral and political philosophy.Hobbes: Prince of Peace is likely to become the classic introduction to the work of Thomas Hobbes and will be a valuable resource for scholars and students seeking to understand the importance and relevance of his work today.

Book Description: "Ossian purports to be a translation of an epic cycle of Scottish poems from the early dark ages. Ossian, a blind bard, sings of the life and battles of Fingal, a Scotch warrior. Ossian caused a sensation when it was published on the cusp of the era of revolutions, and had a massive cultural impact during the 18th and 19th centuries. Napolean carried a copy into battle; Goethe translated parts of it; the city of Selma, Alabama was named after the home of Fingal, and one of Ingres' most romantic and moody paintings, the Dream of Ossian (above) was based on it.James Macpherson claimed that Ossian was based on an ancient Gaelic manuscript. There was just one problem. The existence of this manuscript was never established. In fact, unlike Ireland and Wales, there are no dark-age manuscripts of epic poems, tales, and chronicles and so on from Scotland. It isn't that such ancient Scottish poetry and lore didn't exist, it was just purely oral in nature. Not much of it was committed to writing until it was on the verge of extinction. There are Scottish manuscripts and books in existence today which date as far back as the 12th century (some with scraps of poetry in them), but they are principally on subjects such as religion, genealogy, and land grants. For this and several other reasons which are dealt with in the Preliminary Discourse et seq., authenticity of the work was widely contested, particularly by Samuel Johnson. A huge (and probably excessive) backlash ensued, and conventional wisdom today brands Ossian as one of the great forgeries of history. In fairness, themes, characters and passages of Ossian are based on established Celtic and Scottish folklore. Much of the fourth volume of J.F. Campbell's massive Popular Tales of the West Highlands is devoted to tracking down Ossianic fragments in circulation prior to Macpherson, or elicited from illiterate Highland peasants who had never heard of Ossian.Macpherson is today considered the author of this work. The language of composition was probably English: As Campbell determined, Macpherson wasn't even particularly fluent in Gaelic. The work has literary merits, and historical importance. The project resembles other Romantic era attempts at national epic-building such as the Finnish Kalevala; however the Kalevala is acknowledged to be based on years of ethnographic fieldwork by Elias Lönnrot. Lönnrot is now believed to have composed a few bridge portions of the Kalevala; but he didn't pull a great deal of the work out of thin air, as did Macpherson." `One can only applaud the bravery of an author who gently send up Kierkegaard's wilful obscurantism and cleans out the acrid smoke of Gauloises from the room. With welcome clarity and sanity, Mick Cooper efficiently lays out the concepts, techniques and directions adopted by several key figures in the broad field of existentially informed psychotherapy. In an excellent first chapter, Mick Cooper pointed out my `ontic' from my `ontological'; and I could see, behind the long-words-with-dashes, the true resonance of these ideas with real human and therapeutic issues, dilemmas and goals' - Clinical Psychology `This book proves to be a real treasure chest: what you always wanted to know about existential psychotherapy but failed to find anywhere else in such a comprehensive, clear and concise manner. In that sense, this publication provides a missing link. One merit of the book is its systematic structure. As extensive, and in part as heterogeneous as existential philosophy and therapy also maybe, Mick Cooper had nevertheless been able to build convincing clusters with, on the one hand, an enormous understanding of details and, on the other, a far-sightedness that, like a map, provides orientation in the diversity of existential therapy. I really appreciate this publication and can recommend it very strongly' - Person-Centred and Experiential Psychotherapies `Existential Therapies will I suspect, suddenly make "existentialism" come alive. The author, Mick Cooper loves his subject, it fascinates and enthrals him, and we get to experience some of that, even though the book is "academic". The connections and overlaps with person-centred psychology are there for us to be, but so are the differences' - Person-Centred Practice `As an overview of a number of different existential therapies the book is extremely welcome and manages in a relatively short space to cover a wide arena. Overall I rate the book highly. To pull together a large and somewhat disparate literature, then make sense of it and finally retains the reader's interest, is difficult' - Existential Analysis `Mick Cooper has done an impressive job in writing a much needed, current and user friendly survey of the field of existential therapies. If I were to teach this course, I would use this book. I applaud Mick Cooper for having admirably achieved the aim he set out to achieve. 1927. From Canadian author de la Roche, comes the popular Jalna saga. The series, consisting of 16 volumes, made her a popular novelist. The story covers 100 years of the wealthy Whiteoak family history, and it is partly based on de la Roche's own experiences. The central characters are Adeline Whiteoak, his grandson Eden and his half-brother Renny, his wife Alayne with a number of spouses, ex-spouses, and spouses-to-be. The seventh book in the series, Jalna begins: Wakefield Whiteoak ran on and on, faster and faster, till he could run no farther. He did not know why he had suddenly increased his speed. He did not even know why he ran. When, out of breath, he threw himself face down on the new spring sod of the meadow, he completely forget that he had been running at all, and lay, his cheek pressed against the tender grass, his heart thudding against his ribs, without a thought in his head. He was no more happy or unhappy than the April wind that raced across his body or the young grass that quivered with life beneath it. He was simply alive, young, and pressed by the need of violent exertion. See other titles by this author available from Kessinger Publishing.

CHAPTER I THE Street stretched away north and south in two "lines of ancient houses that seemed to meet in the distance. The man found it infinitely inviting. It had the well-worn look of an old coat, shabby but comfortable. The thought of coming there to live pleased him. Surely here would be peace - long evenings in which to read, quiet nights in ,vhich to sleep and forget. It was an impression of home, really, that it gave. The man did not know that, or care particularly. He had been wandering about a long time - not in years, for he was less than thirty. But it seemed a very long time. At the little house no one had seemed to think about references. He could have given one or two, of a sort. He had gone to considerable trouble to get them; and no,v, not to have them asked for - There was a house across and a little way down the Street, with a card in the window that said: "Meals, nventy-five cents." “If this is your first taste of Howard, I envy you.”—From the Introduction by George R.R. Martin Acclaimed cult author Waldrop's stories are sophisticated, magical recombinations of the stuff our pop-culture dreams are made of. Open this book and encounter jazz singers, robotic cartoon ducks, nosferatu, angry gorillas, and, of course, the dodo. The first paperback (and twentieth anniversary) edition of a landmark debut collection. Waldrop’s capacious, encyclopedic knowledge of superheroes, baseball players, world wars, long-dead film stars, Mexican wrestlers, pulp serials, and fairy tales is put to good use in these sophisticated re-combinations of oddball television shows, radio plays, scientific expeditions, extinct species, knock-knock jokes, and questions like these: * What if the dodo wasn't extinct after all? * What if sumo wrestlers could defeat their opponents with the power of the mind? * What if Izaak Walton and John Bunyan went fishing for Leviathan in the Slough of Despond? Never published in paperback, long out of print, and extremely collectible, Howard Who? was Waldrop's seminal debut collection. If you haven't read Waldrop before, you're in for a treat. "The best Waldrops tend to mix the humorous and wistful.... Italo Calvino once said that he was "known as an author who changes greatly from one book to the next. And in these very changes you recognize him as himself." Much the same could be said of Howard Waldrop. You never know what he'll come up with next, but somehow it's always a Waldrop story. Read the work of this wonderful writer, a man who has devoted his life to his art -- and to fishing."—Michael Dirda, Washington Post "A charming collection."—Los Angeles Times "Back in print after so many years, Howard Who? remains a terrific collection of short stories. There is nobody else alive writing stories as magnificently strange, deliriously inventive, and utterly wonderful as Howard Waldrop." —Metrobeat Table of Contents Introduction by George R. R. Martin. In their follow-up to The Hamptons: Life Behind the Hedges, authors Susan Meisel and Ellen Harris take the reader on yet another intimate journey through the Hamptons that they love. From the beaches to the farms and produce stands, from mansions to humble cottages, from sparkling backyard pools to lush gardens and manicured lawns, this insider's tour allows the reader a glimpse of a quieter side of the Hamptons. Often lost in the fray of traffic, shopping, and partying, the Hamptons revealed in these pages is a place long beloved by artists, writers, and those seeking respite from the rigors of the city. Through Meisel's gorgeous photography and the authors' personal, conversational text, the essence of the Hamptons is vividly conveyed. We see the surf caressing the sand as a white-hot sun kisses the water's edge; wisteria vines wending its way across the facade of a tiny cottage; wide open fields of perfectly plowed rows of potatoes wrapping around a huge red barn; a majestic mansion overlooking the bay; a gate, slightly ajar, reveals the interior of a well-groomed garden; a yellow table and chairs is set beside a velvet-purple lavender garden, so inviting for a bit of reading and an ice-cold lemonade. Perusing these images, it's easy why the Hamptons continue to draw people to come for a vacation...or to stay forever.

This new translation, the lifework of the author, is fully academically oriented. Given that it is the largest Japanese poetic anthology and thus the most important compendium of Japanese culture of the Asuka period (AD 592 710) and most of the Nara period (AD 710 784), it is very much more than a work of literature, which has been the single focus of previous translations by Pierson and Suga. Thus, in this translation the author has sought to present the Man'yoshu to the reader preserving as far as possible the flavour, sounds and semantics of the original poems. The result is a more literate but true translation. In addition, because the realia of the Man'yoshu are mostly alien to both Westerners and modern Japanese, the text contains appropriate commentaries that illuminate the context. Also unique to this new version is the appearance of the original text, kana transliterations, romanization and glossing with morphemic analysis for the benefit of specialists and students of Old Japanese. The entire translation will consist of 20 volumes, paralleling the original twenty books. The first to be published is volume 15 (announced here) one of six books written mostly in phonographic script. The author argues that the importance of book 15 lies in the fact that it contains a large number of Western Old Japanese grammatical forms and constructions that are not attested in any other Western Old Japanese text, but are extremely important in understanding this language, thereby providing a valuable foundation for all the other Man'yoshu texts, including those written in semantographic text. Volume 15 will be followed by publication of volumes 5 (Autumn 2009), 14 and 17 (2010), 18 and 20 (2011) also written largely in phonographic script. The publication sequence and anticipated dates of the remaining volumes will be announced at a future date.
