Joined by co-editors Theresa Severance and Alan Bruce, Joseph Jacoby continues to provide classic scholarly works on criminology in their original form, allowing readers to share in the discovery and unfolding of powerful ideas in the authors' own words. These writings from over the past two centuries represent the most influential approaches to, explanations of, and social responses to crime. The Fourth Edition offers seventy-five selections, thirteen of which are new to this edition. Included in this comprehensive volume are both authors whose work is widely recognized as significant in itself, and authors whose work substantially influenced the thinking of subsequent scholars. This inclusive collection is organized into three sections, each of which opens with a brief editorial introduction to provide context. Section I, The Classic Descriptions of Crime, contains writings whose primary contribution is descriptive, although they also offer important theoretical insights. These works illuminate with great clarity certain aspects of the phenomenon of crime. Section II, Theories of Causation of Crime, covers over two centuries of theorizing about the causes of crime. Most of these writings are specifically about crime, although some emphasize larger social issues that have direct implications for criminology. Section III, The Social Response to Crime, includes writings that variously describe, theorize about, or advocate specific social responses to crime. Some of the best works on the criminal justice process as it operates internally and as it functions in its social setting are included here.

This is the first solo photo book by Australian photographer Paul Freeman. 'Blue' magazine's favorite photographer for many years, Freeman is also known for authoring the best-selling biography of Ian Roberts ('Ian Roberts: Finding Out', Random House, Australia 1997) 'Bondi Classic' stands out in a publishing genre filled, of late, with thoughtless compilations. It's a sumptuous 240-page hardbound, with beautiful production values and design, and exquisite photography. It's the first in a self-published series of 'coffee table' collectibles by Freeman's. A tribute to the Australian hero, Bondi Classic responds to a strong international demand for a book of Freeman's art nude portraiture. With remarkable talent Freeman gives us a sensual yet respectful look at a vast and varied array of Aussie men, including some of Australia's top actors, models, sports stars and Olympians. (Captured champion iron men, Princess Diana's personal trainer, mister Australia body building champions, actors from international theatre and film, television soap heart-throbs, top pro footballers, Olympic boxers, divers and wrestlers, and an Australian Man Of The Year!) Using classic and European religious art references, often within an ancient and moody Sydney coastal environment, Bondi Classic takes us on an epic of unabashed male physicality. Maintaining a reverential distance from his subjects, Freeman's story revels in the paradoxes of masculinity. His subjects are strong yet sensual, courageous while provocative, violent and divinely innocent. Director of the internationally- acclaimed Sydney Festival, Brett Sheehy, gave the book a rave review when he launched it in Sydney in February 2004. Sheehy referred to Freeman as a new Bruce Weber, as well as Australia's own Renaissance man.

Three ancient texts expressing the essence of the Korean Way of Tea are here translated into English for the first time. The oldest, ChaBu Rhapsody to Tea, by Hanjae Yi Mok (1471-1498), is a sophisticated and delicate celebration of tea. The author was a scholar of considerable attainments who died far too early. The 19th century saw a tea revival among Korean literati. Its main guide was the Venerable Cho ui (1786-1866). The first of his tea texts, ChaSinJeon Chronicle of the Spirit of Tea, he copied from a Ming Chinese work to serve as a practical guide to tea. The great poem, DongChaSong Hymn in Praise of Korean Tea, for which Cho ui is chiefly celebrated, is a set of formal poetic stanzas celebrating tea with notes by the author to elucidate the references. This volume offers an English translation of these three remarkable works, with explanatory notes and biographies of the two great masters of Korean tea. It gives readers who are unfamiliar with Classical Chinese access to the essential texts of the Korean Way of Tea.

University professor Louis Fraiberg here assembles essays representing the lifework of his late wife, a celebrated child psychoanalyst and the author of the classic The Magic Years (1959). Though the jargon, detailed expositions of research techniques, literary analyses, and unavoidable repetition make this work more suited to scholars than curious parents, the many moving case studies of infants manifesting pathological defenses and of blind, nutritionally deficient, and behaviorally maladjusted children validate the nurturing parent's indispensable role. Highly recommended to public libraries lacking Fraiberg's earlier works and to collections serving social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, and educators.

With an international clientele--among whom may be numbered royalty, giants of industry, and leaders of state--it is no wonder that interior designer and decorator of renown Alberto Pinto feels himself best suited to the shadows--albeit the shadows of the great. From this privileged position he subtly shapes lifestyles and, to a certain extent, the images of princes. In Alberto Pinto: Classics, author Philippe Renaud offers us an intimate glimpse of Pinto's world, a world of exquisite luxury and opulence, a world in which, by Pinto's hand, elegance and abundance are brought to balance in harmonious accord. We are shown the magnificent interiors of apartments in New York, mansions in Paris, villas on the Riviera, country houses in England, and palaces in Cairo. We are also brought to a ranch in the deserts of New Mexico and to the ocean-side hills of Long Island's elegant Hamptons. Here we find Pinto's cultivated but decidedly eclectic approach to design--an indirect result, perhaps, of his having grown up in post-colonial Casablanca. His roots are Moroccan--under the certain influence of Paris. Of course, his work is more than this: it is an amalgam of British chic, French elegance, and American rationalism; it is a manipulation of classical styles with a twist; it is frequently a brilliantly daring tendency to juxtaposition and apparent paradox in which a surrealistic painting by Magritte might hang below a Neoclassical bust--all of this ultimately resounding in an affirmation of Alberto Pinto as the interior designer and decorator of choice.

Between 1958 and 1970, a distinctive movement for racial justice emerged from unique circumstances in Milwaukee. A series of local leaders inspired growing numbers of people to participate in campaigns against employment and housing discrimination, segregated public schools, the membership of public officials in discriminatory organizations, welfare cuts, and police brutality. The Milwaukee movement culminated in the dramatic—and sometimes violent—1967 open housing campaign. A white Catholic priest, James Groppi, led the NAACP Youth Council and Commandos in a militant struggle that lasted for 200 consecutive nights and provoked the ire of thousands of white residents. After working-class mobs attacked demonstrators, some called Milwaukee “the Selma of the North.” Others believed the housing campaign represented the last stand for a nonviolent, interracial, church-based movement. Patrick Jones tells a powerful and dramatic story that is important for its insights into civil rights history: the debate over nonviolence and armed self-defense, the meaning of Black Power, the relationship between local and national movements, and the dynamic between southern and northern activism. Jones offers a valuable contribution to movement history in the urban North that also adds a vital piece to the national story. (20090512)

On March 7, 1965, voting rights demonstrators were brutally beaten as they crossed the Edmund Petis bridge in Selma, Alabama. One of the most-publicized incidents of the civil rights campaign, images from that day have been seared into the nation's consciousness. Yet little has been written about the civil rights events in the surrounding counties, the vast sections of the rural south. Cynthia Griggs Fleming addresses this gap by bringing to light the struggle for equality of the citizens of Wilcox County, Alabama. Although right next door to Selma, their story has been largely ignored. Through the eyes of the residents of the county, Fleming relates a struggle punctuated by cowardice and courage, audacity and timidity, fear and foolishness. And, in the end, the entrenched power structure refused to yield and the county remains segregated to this day. Personal and compelling, In the Shadow of Selma is essential reading for everyone interested in the continuing struggle for civil rights in the United States.

This book, first published in 1987 and here reprinted with a new foreword by the authors has become a classic in the field of herpetology. In ecological and evolutionary research snakes occupy a unique niche. Studies of their adaptations and life histories have broad applications for the most basic questions in biology. This book fills the need for an up-to-date text/reference in the growing field of snake ecology and evolutionary biology. Here, in one volume is an extensive review of the biology of these fascinating reptiles, including topics such as zoogeography, fossil history, systematics, foraging and reproduction. With contributions from many leading herpetologists, the work is divided into sections on Systematics and Morphology, Methods and Techniques and Life History and Ecology. Each section summarizes what is known about these major fields of snake biology. This book serves the needs of those actively involved in research as well as the amateur naturalist and the beginning student. Dr. Richard A. Seigel became interested in herpetology while an undergraduate at Rutgers University, where he received his B.A. in Zoology and Physiology in 1977. He continued his work with amphibians and reptiles while getting his M.S. in Biological Sciences from the University of Central Florida in 1979 and his Ph.D. from the University of Kansas in 1984. He is currently Full Professor and Chair of the Department of Biological Sciences at Towson University in Maryland. Dr. Siegel's primary research interests are in the population ecology and conservation biology of amphibians and reptiles. He has published over 50 peer-reviewed papers and has co-authored or edited four texts on the ecology and biology of snakes. From 1993-2000, he was the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Herpetology, the largest international publication in its field. Joseph T. Collins has written more than 200 articles on reptiles, amphibians, and fishes throughout North America and twenty-three books, including: Peterson Field Guide to Reptiles and Amphibians of Eastern and Central North America Third Edition (with Roger Conant), Amphibians and Reptiles in Kansas Third Edition (with photographs by Suzanne L. Collins), Natural Kansas, An Illustrated Guide to Endangered or Threatened Species in Kansas, (with Suzanne L. Collins, Jerry Horak, Dan Mulhern, William H. Busby, Craig C. Freeman, and Gary Wallace), A Key to Amphibians and Reptiles of the Continental United States and Canada (with Robert Powell and Errol D. Hooper, Jr.). In 1978, Collins served as president of the Society for the Study of Amphibians and Reptiles, the leading international professional society in that field, as president of the Kansas Association of Biology Teachers (1980-1981) and as president of the Kansas Herpetological Society. He was a distinguished delegate to the First World Congress of Herpetology at Canterbury, England in 1989, and was made a Distinguished Life Member of the Kansas Herpetological Society in 1998. Susan S. Novak, a native of Chicago, has been a Lawrence, Kansas, resident since 1986. Novak has been an editor of scientific/technical, scholarly, and popular work for twenty years, working formerly as the editor at the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory. She joined the staff of the Kansas State Historical Society in 1993, where she has since served as the managing editor of Kansas Heritage magazine and the associate editor of Kansas History: A Journal of the Central Plains, providing regular departments, main articles, photographs, book reviews, and layout and design work.

A Swedish Gone with the Wind by the first woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature-published here in the first new English translation in more than 100 years One hundred years ago, Selma Lagerlöf became the first woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. She assured her place in Swedish letters with this sweeping historical epic, her first and best-loved novel, and the basis for the 1924 silent film of the same name that launched Greta Garbo to stardom. Set in 1820s Sweden, it tells the story of a defrocked minister named Gösta Berling. After his appetite for alcohol and previous indiscretions end his career, Berling finds a home at Ekeby, an ironworks estate owned by Margareta Celsing, the "Majoress," that also houses an assortment of eccentric veterans of the Napoleonic Wars. Berling's defiant and poetic spirit proves magnetic to a string of women, who fall under his spell against the backdrop of political intrigue at Margareta's estate and the magnificent wintry beauty of rural Sweden.

The reissue of a classic work, now with a foreword by Daniel Goleman! Here is a monumental work that continues in the tradition pioneered by co-author Richard Lazarus in his classic book Psychological Stress and the Coping Process. Dr. Lazarus and his collaborator, Dr. Susan Folkman, present here a detailed theory of psychological stress, building on the concepts of cognitive appraisal and coping which have become major themes of theory and investigation. As an integrative theoretical analysis, this volume pulls together two decades of research and thought on issues in behavioral medicine, emotion, stress management, treatment, and life span development. A selective review of the most pertinent literature is included in each chapter. The total reference listing for the book extends to 60 pages. This work is necessarily multidisciplinary, reflecting the many dimensions of stress-related problems and their situation within a complex social context. While the emphasis is on psychological aspects of stress, the book is oriented towards professionals in various disciplines, as well as advanced students and educated laypersons. The intended audience ranges from psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, nurses, and social workers to sociologists, anthropologists, medical researchers, and physiologists.

Psychodiagnosis in Schizophrenia is a reprint of a classic volume in assessment psychology that first appeared in 1966. The book concerns the use of psychodiagnostic techniques in the differential diagnosis of schizophrenia. The author first presents a conceptual analysis of schizophrenic disturbance in terms of impaired ego functioning and extrapolates from schizophrenic ego impairments to psychodiagnostic indices that have been demonstrated to assess them. In particular, Weiner refers to the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, the Rorschach Inkblot Method, and the Draw-A-Person test. Clinical and research data delineating the nature of psychological deficits in schizophrenia are reviewed, and practical guidelines for the clinical assessment of these deficits are presented. The author next considers several differential diagnostic possibilities frequently considered in the evaluation of schizophrenic persons, with separate chapters devoted to the many forms of schizophrenia, such as: acute, chronic, paranoid, nonparanoid, incipient, remitting, borderline and pseudoneurotic. There are also chapters that focus on schizoaffective disorder and adolescent schizophrenia. The conceptual and empirical contributions to these distinctions are reviewed; accordingly, the differentiating characteristics of these subcategories are related to parameters of psychodiagnostic test performance. In additon, the process of differential psychodiagnosis in schizophrenia is illustrated by detailed case studies. In an extended new preface, the author comments on current perspectives and contemporary literature related to the individual chapters of the text.

Ten years of research have led the author of the best-selling classic Wild Swans, Jung Chang and her husband, historian Jon Halliday, to write what is considered today as the official and most comprehensive biography of Mao Tse-Tung written to date. Full of surprising revelations, this book presents a side of Mao unknown to this day –a man who was not driven by ideology or idealism but by a secret thirst to dominate the world. The pursuit of his dream caused the death of 38 million people in the most devastating famine the world has seen. Ironically, more than 70 million people perished during the period of peace under Mao’s reign.

'Screen Writings: Genres, Classics, and Aesthetics' offers close readings of genre films and acknowledged film classics in an attempt to explore both the aesthetics of genre and the definition of 'classic' - as well as the changing perception of so-called classic movies over time. Implicitly theoretical as much as it is unashamedly practical, this book is a model not only of film analysis, but also of the enlightened deployment of cultural studies in the service of cinema study.
