Prisca Martens's most powerful teacher has been her daughter Sarah. When Sarah at age four responded "I already know how to read" to the suggestion that this was something she would learn in kindergarten, Martens realized children's perceptions of literacy and of themselves as learners may differ from those of adults. Over the three years Martens observed and analyzed Sarah's reading and writing (ages two through five), Sarah helped Martens rethink her notions about literacy: what literacy is, how children learn literacy, and as Sarah entered kindergarten, what teachers can do to support and facilitate that learning in school. In I Already Know How to Read Martens documents how Sarah, through meaningful literacy experiences in her social community, understood literacy and invented reading and writing for herself. Numerous reading and writing samples, organized around broad research questions, present Sarah as an inquirer who actively constructs her understanding of literacy and ways to be literate. Martens recognizes that children's opportunities and experiences with print differ. But by looking closely at one child's literacy development, we learn how to see and understand the literacy development of others. The implications for the classroom are extraordinary-as Sarah taught her mother to see, her story will help practicing and preservice teachers to see as well.

How do ordinary people come to know or believe what they do
... Read more
How do ordinary people come to know or believe what they do? We need an account of this process to help explain why people act as they do. You might think I am acting irrationally--against my interest or my purpose--until you realize that what you know and what I know differ significantly. My actions, given my knowledge, might make eminently good sense. Of course, this pushes our problem back one stage to assess why someone knows or believes what they do. That is the focus of this book. Russell Hardin supposes that people are not usually going to act knowingly against their interests or other purposes. To try to understand how they have come to their knowledge or beliefs is therefore to be charitable in assessing their rationality. Hardin insists on such a charitable stance in the effort to understand others and their sometimes objectively perverse actions. Hardin presents an essentially economic account of what an individual can come to know and then applies this account to many areas of ordinary life: political participation, religious beliefs, popular knowledge of science, liberalism, culture, extremism, moral beliefs, and institutional knowledge. All of these can be enlightened by the supposition that people are attempting reasonable actions under the severe constraints of acquiring better knowledge when they face demands that far outstretch their possibilities.

A self-made man, Max Siegel, CEO of a major marketing branding firm and business consultant to some of the country's biggest corporations, manages artists and sports teams, singers and Nascar drivers. He's convinced recording artists to experiment with new kinds of music and talked athletes into working for the good of the team over their own individual glory. Few situations daunt him, and in his view, there's hardly a dilemma that can't be solved. The child of an African-American mother and a white, Jewish father, he grew up poor in a climate of divorce and violence. Yet, throughout his life, he has discovered ways to turn disadvantage to advantage. How? The secret, Siegel says, is in knowing what makes others tick. For some it's money, for others more time, a bigger office, more respect, better support. In just nine simple steps he shows how to assess what motivates others, find the right people to help achieve their goals, and establish a mutual realization of these goals as the core component of relationships. Following the universal rules outlined in "Know What Makes Them Tick", readers can get what they need in every area of life, from work and love to spirituality and family.

This book by a practitioner (not an academic, a government official, or a pundit) has been written for practitioners and offers fresh thinking on how to do international development work. It combines that thinking with practical guidance, in plain English, on what to do-and perhaps just as importantly-what not to do on the ground. We Do Know How takes buzzwords commonly used in development circles-"demand-driven," "results-oriented," "accountability," and others-and makes them real, spelling out a proven approach for expanding business sales and generating jobs for poor people. Although government has a role to play in development, in the end the actions of businesses drive economic growth and expand people's incomes. We Do Know How shows how to build on the incentives that drive businesses and, in the process, create jobs for the poor. Specifically, it urges development practitioners to support only those business opportunities for which there is market demand, abiding by the maxim, "produce what you can sell," not "sell what you produce." More than that, it cautions practitioners not to become solutions looking for problems but to search creatively for ways to solve the specific problems that stand most in the way of clients meeting buyers' requirements. We Do Know How challenges much conventional wisdom on how to do development work. At the same time, and in contrast to other books on development, it shows how, by maintaining focus and discipline, development practitioners can deliver demonstrable increases in jobs for those who need them.

Since the term "standard" met the term "movement" well over a decade ago, the phrase "what students should know and be able to do" has increasingly come to determine classroom practice. Now, fixed, absolute end-point measures dictate what we know about our students-grade level by grade level, subject area by subject area, school by school. Worse, our students have been backed into marginal, nonparticipatory roles in their own education: their voices no longer heard; their capacity to assess their knowledge no longer recognized. The Portfolio Standard provides an antidote to our current national mania for measuring, proposing instead that today's standard setters learn from the students they are so anxious to assess. Without our students' active participation in reflecting on their own learning, the authors argue, we are left with static, outdated, arbitrary notions of "what [our] students should know and be able to do." Without such active partnerships, our roles as teachers wither. This book, by contrast, offers thoughts, projects, and first-hand accounts of portfolio keeping in the voices of the keepers themselves.

Which few decisions or activities, if done incorrectly, almost always negatively affect performance, even if most other things go right? And which decisions or activities, done correctly, will almost always deliver disproportionately positive effects on performance? People working in the financial markets and businesses linked to the financial markets, such as HR, IT, credit or legal departments are expected to understand a range of ever-changing financial concepts, products and practices. Yet too often there is no direct experience upon which to draw, or practitioners have become over-specialised. For example, the bond marketer will only have a sliver of knowledge about FOREX markets, or the marketing relationship manager who only has a fleeting acquaintance with derivatives, or the high-flying graduate entrant who is feeling daunted by all the terminology and market jargon. Market Know-How: Finance and Markets is an exciting and targeted training book written for anyone who feels that they may not have all the facts, or for those wanting an authoritative introduction to the financial markets. It brings together experts in securities trading, derivatives, foreign exchange traders and IT consultants to provide explanations and advice on situations, conditions and market uses and applications. This book will be the difference between success and failure - it is from the markets, for the markets. The following people have contributed to the book: Tony Blunden, Chase Cooper Sue Cooper, Enigma Management Development Bill Hodgson, Sapient Richard Moore, ex-Citigroup and FX market legend Mike Simmons, Independent trainer and author

"Millions of people want to know the origin of the words they use. Word columns in daily newspapers and numerous books attempt to satisfy their curiosity. Word histories are usually digested like pills: the user is interested in getting well, not in the chemistry of the prescribed medication. Those who send letters to the Editor also want a straight answer without bothering about how "editors" come by their knowledge. Therefore, they fail to realize that etymologies are seldom definitive and that the science of etymology is intensely interesting. Perhaps if someone explained to them that, compared to the drama of words, Hamlet is a light farce, they might develop a more informed attitude toward philological research and become students of historical linguistics rather than gullible consumers of journalists' pap."--Anatoly LibermanWord Origins is the only guide to the science and process of etymology for the layperson. This funny, charming, and conversational book not only tells the known origins of hundreds of words, but also shows how their origins were determined. Liberman, an internationally acclaimed etymologist, takes the reader by the hand and explains the many ways that English words can be made, and the many ways in which etymologists try to unearth the origins of words.Part history, part how-to, and completely entertaining, Word Origins invites readers behind the scenes to watch an etymologist at work.

What Does Google Know about You? And Who Are They Telling? When you use Google’s “free” services, you pay, big time–with personal information about yourself. Google is making a fortune on what it knows about you…and you may be shocked by just how much Google does know. Googling Security is the first book to reveal how Google’s vast information stockpiles could be used against you or your business–and what you can do to protect yourself. Unlike other books on Google hacking, this book covers information you disclose when using all of Google’s top applications, not just what savvy users can retrieve via Google’s search results. West Point computer science professor Greg Conti reveals the privacy implications of Gmail, Google Maps, Google Talk, Google Groups, Google Alerts, Google’s new mobile applications, and more. Drawing on his own advanced security research, Conti shows how Google’s databases can be used by others with bad intent, even if Google succeeds in its pledge of “don’t be evil.” Uncover the trail of informational “bread crumbs” you leave when you use Google search How Gmail could be used to track your personal network of friends, family, and acquaintances How Google’s map and location tools could disclose the locations of your home, employer, family and friends, travel plans, and intentions How the information stockpiles of Google and other online companies may be spilled, lost, taken, shared, or subpoenaed and later used for identity theft or even blackmail How the Google AdSense and DoubleClick advertising services could track you around the Web How to systematically reduce the personal information you expose or give away This book is a wake-up call and a “how-to” self-defense manual: an indispensable resource for everyone, from private citizens to security professionals, who relies on Google. Breakthrough research on knowledge transfer reveals five pr
... Read more
Breakthrough research on knowledge transfer reveals five proven methods for making knowledge sharing a reality - which are right for your company? While external knowledge - about customers, about competitors - is critical, it rarely provides a competitive edge for companies because such information is equally available to everyone. But internal 'know-how' that is unique to a specific company - how to introduce a new drug into the diabetes market, how to decrease assembly time in an automobile plant - is the stuff of which sustained competitive advantage is made. Nancy Dixon, an expert in the field of organizational learning, calls this knowledge borne of experience 'common knowledge', and argues that in order to get beyond talking about knowledge management to actually doing it, companies must first recognize that all knowledge is not created - and therefore can't be shared - equally. Creating successful knowledge transfer systems, Dixon argues, requires matching the type of knowledge to be shared to the method best suited for transferring it effectively. Based on an in-depth study of several organizations - including Ernst & Young, Bechtel, Ford, Chevron, British Petroleum, Texas Instruments, and the U.S. Army - that are leading the field in successful knowledge transfer, "Common Knowledge" reveals groundbreaking insights into how organizational knowledge is created, how it can be effectively shared - and why transfer systems work when they do. Until now, most organizations have had to rely on costly 'trial and error' to find a knowledge transfer system that works for them. Dixon helps managers take the guesswork out of this process by outlining three criteria that must be considered in order to determine how a transfer method will work in a specific situation: the type of knowledge to be transferred, the nature of the task, and who the receiver of that knowledge will be. Drawing from the successful - but very different - practices of the companies in her study and providing compelling illustrative stories based on the experiences of real managers, Dixon distills five distinct categories of knowledge transfer, explains the principles that make each of them work, and helps managers determine which of these systems would be most effective in their own organizations. "Common Knowledge" gets to the heart of one of the most difficult questions in knowledge transfer today: what makes a system work effectively in one organization but fail miserably in another? Going beyond 'one-size-fits-all' approaches and simple generalities like upper management involvement and cultural issues, this important book will help organizations of every kind construct knowledge transfer systems tailored to their unique forms of 'common knowledge' - and in the process create the best kind of competitive advantage there is: the kind that can't be copied.
