The third title in Thames & Hudson's major new Art Works series, this 'exhibition in a book' features the work of over 100 artists who examine the place and function of performance in the contemporary world. The book is divided into eight rooms on the themes of: Inside the Box/Outside the Box; Perofrming the Object; Exchange and Transform; Still Life/Tableaux Vivants; Provoking the Everyday; Traces/Oblivion; Narrate/Withhold; and The Performer is in All of Us. Some of the artists present themselves as living, performing objects, others make the audience the main protagonists in the creative process. Some create ephemeral or short-lived pieces, or pieces that are designed to leave traces of the artist's or viewer's actions, while others freeze time in dramatic images or hyperrealistic sculptures. Some explore storytelling in their performances, while others offer only cryptic fragments. Complete with over 300 illustrations, most in full colour, Perform explores performnce in art from a wide range of artistic attitudes and practices. The book closes with a round-table discussion between the author-curators and a handful of fellow critics, artists and writers on themes and ideas stimulated by the topic of the book.

'At last, the past has arrived! Performing Remains is Rebecca Schneider's authoritative statement on a major topic of interest to the field of theatre and performance studies. It extends and consolidates her pioneering contributions to the field through its interdisciplinary method, vivid writing, and stimulating polemic. Performing Remains has been eagerly awaited, and will be appreciated now and in the future for its rigorous investigations into the aesthetic and political potential of reenactments.' - Tavia Nyong'o, Tisch School of the Arts, New York University 'I have often wondered where the big, important, paradigm-changing book about re-enactment is: Schneider’s book seems to me to be that book. Her work is challenging, thoughtful and innovative and will set the agenda for study in a number of areas for the next decade.' - Jerome de Groot, University of Manchester Performing Remains is a dazzling new study exploring the role of the fake, the false and the faux in contemporary performance. Rebecca Schneider argues passionately that performance can be engaged as what remains, rather than what disappears. Across seven essays, Schneider presents a forensic and unique examination of both contemporary and historical performance, drawing on a variety of elucidating sources including the "America" plays of Linda Mussmann and Suzan-Lori Parks, performances of Marina Abramovic´ and Allison Smith, and the continued popular appeal of Civil War reenactments. Performing Remains questions the importance of representation throughout history and today, while boldly reassessing the ritual value of failure to recapture the past and recreate the "original."

This is the first full-length study in English of Japan's folk performing arts covering such topics as the different categories of presentations, public policies affecting the folk performing arts, performance events within and without communities, and the folk performing arts in literature. Throughout, it addresses issues concerning the survival and preservation of traditional culture in contemporary Japan. Once largely unknown outside of their local community settings, Japan's folk performing arts have today captured universal attention. In Japan, almost every municipality is home to one or more of the diverse dramatic, dance, narrative, and musical presentations that make up the folk performing arts. They can be seen at events that range from long-established festivals to newly created folk-culture and tourist programs. Since the 1920s, a growing body of work by folklorists, theater historians, and other academic specialists, together with literary treatment by well-known authors, brought the folk performing arts into the national cultural spotlight. The postwar Cultural Properties Protection Law conferred on them the status of legally designated cultural assets.

This book explores the organization of creative industries, including the visual and performing arts, movies, theater, sound recordings, and book publishing. In each, artistic inputs are combined with other, "humdrum" inputs. But the deals that bring these inputs together are inherently problematic: artists have strong views; the muse whispers erratically; and consumer approval remains highly uncertain until all costs have been incurred. To assemble, distribute, and store creative products, business firms are organized, some employing creative personnel on long-term contracts, others dealing with them as outside contractors; agents emerge as intermediaries, negotiating contracts and matching creative talents with employers. Firms in creative industries are either small-scale pickers that concentrate on the selection and development of new creative talents or large-scale promoters that undertake the packaging and widespread distribution of established creative goods. In some activities, such as the performing arts, creative ventures facing high fixed costs turn to nonprofit firms. To explain the logic of these arrangements, the author draws on the analytical resources of industrial economics and the theory of contracts. He addresses the winner-take-all character of many creative activities that brings wealth and renown to some artists while dooming others to frustration; why the "option" form of contract is so prevalent; and why even savvy producers get sucked into making "ten-ton turkeys," such as Heaven's Gate. However different their superficial organization and aesthetic properties, whether high or low in cultural ranking, creative industries share the same underlying organizational logic. (20010504)

This book explores the new performativity in art theory and practice, examining ways of rethinking interpretive processes in visual culture. Since the 1960s, visual art practices - from body art to minimalism - have taken contemporary art outside the museum and gallery; by embracing theatricality and performance and exploding the boundaries set by traditional art criticism. The contributors argue that interpretation needs to be recognised as much more dynamic and contingent. Offering its own performance script, and embracing both canonical fine artists such as Manet, De Kooning and Jasper Johns, and performance artists such as Vito Acconci and Gunter Brus, this book offers radical re-readings of art works and points confidently towards new models for understanding art.

Awakening the Performing Body is an exemplary work of practice-based research presented in a pedagogical format. This text is clearly laid out for any acting teacher who wishes to pursue a more spiritual approach to acting and participate in the goal of reclaiming the sacred in theatre - or indeed for any acting teacher who seeks a more body centered and imaginative approach to character and actor-audience connections. This book is a crucial contribution to acting pedagogy. Per K. Brask, University of Winnipeg, Canada Here at last, is a deep, probing and totally fascinating inquiry into the palpable yet unseen forces at work and at play in the theatre. McCutcheon, flaming torch in hand, has entered the mysterious dark cavern where one knows there's a magic exchange. AWAKENING is an awakening - to link mind, body and spirit - to holistically mine acting education where the WHOLE person is engaged, so that magic we long for and crave, becomes something you can actually set out to entice into the light - not something one hopes might appear if we are lucky. An extraordinary work. Dean Carey, Artistic Director/Founder, Actors Centre Australia

As explained throughout the book, having the talent is one thing, but amassing the knowledge, resources, equipment, etc, and then getting yourself into a position where you can entertain people with a view to earning some money is another. Like any trade, the entertainment industry is not something you can just jump into. You have to learn the basics and learn about the industry you are getting involved in. There has to be some kind of an 'apprenticeship' of sorts. If you are even considering starting up as a 'gigging' musician ( going on the road ), spend a couple of weeks or even months with a working act or band, preferably the latter. Travel with them from the moment they leave for the gig. Don't just meet them at the gig, that's cheating. Jump in from the start. You should get an idea how long it can take to pick up band members and equipment with the added bonus of travelling in the back of a cramped van! It's very surprising how much you learn from attending 'coal face' gigs from start to finish. Don't be afraid to ask questions if you need to; they had to start somewhere themselves!

Kriya Yoga - Its Mystery & Performing Art, written by Swami Sadhanananda Giri is described by many of its readers as the Kriyayoga Samhita or the Holy book of Kriyayoga. The luminous words of this inspiring & empowering title are pregnant with spiritual wisdom, which has changed the lives in hundreds of its readers exposing the proper practice of Kriya as originally taught by Yogiraj Sri Sri Lahiri Mahasaya. It is highly recommended as a follow-up of the classic 'Autobiobraphy of A Yogi' written by Paramahansa Yogananda. Paramahansa Yoganandaji's luminous words in 'Autobiobraphy of a Yogi' have inspired millions of people across the world to taste the innermost essence, the nectar of Kriyayoga. But even with such huge number of followers, an ideal & authentic text book of Kriyayoga with both theoretical & practical details is in demand. The secret behind the success of the above title in reorienting its readers' outlook & lifestyle in general is nothing but translation of the divine powers of its author into its contents. The present title with its inspiring & empowering words is a gift to the mankind from another Sadguru - Swami Sadhanananda Giri - from the same lineage. It is a printed shape of his realizations emanating from highest level of spiritual wisdom. Kriyayoga is a novel science comprising of all the best techniques available in different traditional oriental systems of yoga for control of the innate breathing exercise or Pranayama. Yoga - in its totality - prepares the mind as well as the body for the ultimate goal of life - association & assimilation of the individual consciousness with the Supreme Consciousness. The path described for such a marvelous journey is same, simple & secret in every religion - control of the senses & concentration of the mental faculty through control over the respiratory process. Kriyayoga is mentioned in the ancient renowned philosophy of the great sage Patanjali, as a mean for communication with the Absolute by way of certain significant practices – intensely secret. Our revered Sri Sri Lahiribaba revived that sacred tradition & presented to us as the most advanced, up-to-date way of spiritual practice - suitable for both the familymen & renunciants, for any human soul beyond any barrier of religion, caste, age, sex or nationality. As in every art, practice of Kriyayoga too has to be performed under the supervision of an able Master - a self-realised Guru - in living, who himself has crossed all the stages of yogic sublimity. He is the sole origin & medium of transfer of spiritual energy to an obliged & obeisant disciple. Only He holds the key to self-realisation for the disciple. The insurmountable restlessness of human mind has to be focused in the way taught & tutored by the Guru. Any attempt to sail alone in spiritual practice is totally prohibited. Swami Sadhanananda Giri descends from a sacred Guruparampara, the traditional Indian lineage of Guru. Through this masterpiece he wishes to provide every spiritual practitioner in the path of Kriyayoga a ‘practical guide’, to satiate his inquisitiveness, for an insight into the knowledge necessary to allay all misgivings & also to help him appreciate his journey through newer stages of spiritual upliftment during sadhana.

From David Blaine’s death-defying feats of will to Harry Potter’s boarding-school victories against evil forces, the darker side of magic and its performance clearly strikes a cultural nerve. The conjuror’s act of bringing the impossible into being and summoning both the grotesque and marvelous with a sudden gesture challenges spectators’ assumptions of reality and fantasy. Performing Dark Arts explores the paradox of the conjuror and the broader cultural implications of magic’s assault on human perception.Michael Mangan illuminates the history of the conjuring arts and tests the boundaries of theatrical scholarship by analyzing magic acts alongside more conventional dramatic forms. This bracingly original volume discusses the performances of individual magicians and public reception of their acts and locates the mysterious cultural significance of the dark arts and those who practice them. Shining a light on the grey area between acting and being, perception and reality, Performing Dark Arts is a book that will open your mind to the possibilities of magic. “If you want to learn about the one trick that all good conjurers have up their sleeve, the oldest in the book—here it is, rehearsed across the centuries. It is to make sure that whichever cup the audience looks under—mere chicanery or actual sorcery—the ball is not there.”—Mark Stafford, Times (UK) “Conjurors as performers have always had a special niche in exploiting the marvelous or the uncanny and trading upon our hope or fantasy that some real magic may be at work. Mangan’s delightful book shows that they will always be able to do so.”—Rob Hardy, Commercial Dispatch “This is an erudite book which wears its scholarship lightly and is a pleasure to read. Complex theoretical frameworks are introduced in ways that will make them accessible to the general reader, and the book's argument opens up new implications and applications for the study of magic as performance. . . . I was genuinely surprised and delighted with many of Mangan's observations.”—Roberta Mock, University of Plymouth, United Kingdom (20070714)

Many of today's hottest selling games-both non-electronic and electronic-focus on such elements as shooting up as many bad guys as one can (Duke Nuk'em), beating the toughest level (Mortal Kombat), collecting all the cards (Pokémon), and scoring the most points (Tetris). Fantasy role-playing games (Dungeons & Dragons, Rolemaster, GURPs), while they may involve some of those aforementioned elements, rarely focus on them. Instead, playing a fantasy role-playing game is much like acting out a scene from a play, movie or book, only without a predefined script. Players take on such roles as wise wizards, noble knights, roguish sellswords, crafty hobbits, greedy dwarves, and anything else one can imagine and the referee allows. The players don't exactly compete; instead, they interact with each other and with the fantasy setting. The game is played orally with no game board, and although the referee usually has a storyline planned for a game, much of the action is impromptu. Performance is a major part of role-playing, and role-playing games as a performing art is the subject of this book, which attempts to introduce an appreciation for the performance aesthetics of such games. The author provides the framework for a critical model useful in understanding the art-especially in terms of aesthetics-of role-playing games. The book also serves as a contribution to the beginnings of a body of criticism, theory, and aesthetics analysis of a mostly unrecognized and newly developing art form. There are four parts: the cultural structure, the extent to which the game relates to outside cultural elements; the formal structure, or the rules of the game; the social structure, which encompasses the degree and quality of social interaction among players; and the aesthetic structure, concerned with the emergence of role-playing as an art form.

From the Editor's Introduction: "The purpose of this volume is to highlight and discuss the collections that document, inspire, and inform the work of costume designers. Entitled Documenting: Costume Design, this volume is the second in a planned series published by Theatre Library Association which focuses on performance design documentation... This volume is intended for librarians, archivists, researchers, and designers to better understand the historical context of costume design for dance, theatre, and film. It also provides an introduction to extraordinary collections and the range of materials available for research. The topic is extensive in scope and therefore the volume is limited to Western performance traditions and collections maintained in the United States. Image collections and costume collections are inextricably linked to costume design research and several selected collections have been included." The complete list of contributors includes: Sarah Acheson, Helen Adair, Susan Brady, Alvan Bregman, Mary Cargill, Danielle Castronovo, Anne Coco, Nena Couch, Barbara Cohen-Stratyner, Maxine Fleckner Ducey, William Eddelman, Megan Hahn Fraser, Nancy E. Friedland, Julie Graham, Myung-Ja "MJ" Han, Melinda K. Hayes, Marty Jacobs, Diana King, Deirdre Lawrence, Mei-Chen Lu, Phyllis Magidson, Linda Harris Mehr, Robert Melton, Jill Morena, Genevieve Podleski, Mark Quigley, Derek Reid, Melanie Schuessler, Tamsen Schwartzman, Deirdre Clancy Steer, Gayle Strege, Kirsten Tanaka, Melissa Wayne, Timothy R. White, and Eric M. Zafran. The volume includes 16 pages of plates, some in color.
