In the summer of 2006, an ambitious but unproven Bollywood director started filming "Shootout at Lokhandwala", a movie based on an "encounter" between police and gangsters in Bombay in 1991. With a star-studded cast and a true-life story, the film's release was highly anticipated. In the lead role, playing a famous vigilante cop, was superstar Sanjay Dutt. Unfortunately, Dutt was also involved in a massive terrorist trial that had been going on since 1993, and the case came to a head just as filming began. SHOT IN BOMBAY joins the filmmaking team on the last leg of shooting in January 2007, as they try to finish the film before their lead actor is sent to prison. This fast-paced, often surreal documentary weaves together three stories about India's most complicated city: behind the scenes on the set of a star-studded gangster film helmed by director Apoorva Lakhia; a lesson in crime and punishment narrated by retired cop A. A. Khan ("Bombay's Dirty Harry"); and a profile of one of India's most beloved and troubled stars, heartthrob Sanjay Dutt. Lakhia needs a hit, as his last two films flopped. Khan needs to quash rumours that the whole shootout was a setup masterminded by internationally wanted terrorist Dawood Ibrahim. And Sanjay Dutt desperately wants his courtroom saga to be over and his name to be cleared. It's not an easy ride for any of them, and SHOT IN BOMBAY is a rollercoaster-ride along the thin line that separates fact from fiction, and heroes from gangsters. SHOT IN BOMBAY is the fourth film by director Liz Mermin, whose other films include The Beauty Academy of Kabul, Office Tigers, Team Qatar, and Horses."Sensationally entertaining" **** Metro"Absolutely fascinating" **** Time Out London "(Mermin's) keen eye for ironies and quiet wit make for a superior, very entertaining documentary" **** The Telegraph"Cocksure" *** Financial Times"Mindblowing" **** Total FilmThis product is manufactured on demand using DVD-R recordable media. Imagine a movie with the lavish production of Moulin Rouge!, the emotional complexity of a story by the great Russian writer Dostoevsky, a cast of staggeringly beautiful people, and the spectacular choreography of Bollywood extravaganzas? You've just imagined Saawariya, a lush romantic saga decked out in dazzling jewel tones--the entire world gleams with shades of sapphire, emerald, and amethyst. An innocent musician named Raj (Ranbir Kapoor, half Justin Timberlake, half the Scarecrow from The Wizard of Oz) falls madly in love with a lovely young woman named Sakina (Sonam Kapoor), who stands every night on a bridge with a black umbrella. But when he learns that she's in love with another man, a man who has been gone for a year but who promised to return that very week, Raj's pure soul turns corrupt with jealousy and longing. The charming lead actors are both making their feature film debut, but in supporting roles are two Bollywood superstars: Salman Khan (once voted the 7th best-looking man in the world by People Magazine) as Sakina's wayward beloved and the rapturously lovely Rani Mukherjee (sometimes known as the Queen of Bollywood) as a prostitute who counsels Raj in his affair, though she may have feelings of her own for the foolish young man. There's nothing else like Bollywood cinema; Saawariya combines wildly theatrical performances and insane dance sequences with an irresistibly sweeping romanticism that puts Titanic to shame. Truly a feast for the eyes and the heart. --Bret Fetzer
