For 2004, the 5 Series is redesigned down to its aluminum wheels for the first time in eight years. BMWs premise for the all-new 5 Series seems to be more: more room, more equipment and more sophisticated technology, including BMWs controversial iDrive computer interface. Fun, beautiful, but crappy electrical/power systems

Author's Rating: Rating: 2/5 stars

Pros: Exciting to drive, strikingly gorgeous design

Cons: Tempermental electronic systems: an extremely complicated car

I love my 525i when it's in full working order. It's gorgeous and even with the small engine it is a powerhouse. This was my first BMW, and I am very disappointed in the defects in the power and electrical components (the main drive train and engine have never given me a problem). The service response from the dealer has been friendly but mediocre at best and BWMUSA plain sucks in terms of responsiveness. I emailed BWM more than a month ago, got an auto reply saying someone would get back to me in 24 hours. They didn't. I'm having huge service problems with getting seat heater repaired -- already repaired twice, in October caught seat on fire, and dealer is claiming backorders. Car has also had defective Idrive screen, adaptive headlights, seat module, CAS, steering rack. Still under warranty, but no one seems to give a damn about my problems. Bought from Flow dealership in North Carolina. Other than the seat heater, all the fixes seem to have worked. But it's like a trophy wife: beautiful and fun but a pain in the butt.
