The weather is getting hotter, and photographer L.B. Jefferies (Jimmy Stewart) is stuck in his apartment with a broken leg and nothing to do that is, nothing to do but spy on his neighbors through their open windows across the way in the apartment complex. There's an attractive and scantily clad dancer, a songwriter, a lonely woman, and the Thorwalds (Raymond Burr and Irene Winston), a bickering couple, among others. But when Mrs. Thorwald disappears, Jefferies is sure that something's wrong. Soon, despite the warnings of his girlfriend, Lisa (Grace Kelly), and his motherly nurse, Stella (Thelma Ritter), Jefferies has out his binoculars and telephoto lens and is studying his neighbor "like a bug under glass." However, looking in from the outside might not be as safe as Jefferies assumes. REAR WINDOW is not only a gripping story of murder and suspense, it is a celebrated allegory on the nature of film itself, a story in which the audience watches Jefferies watch the story unfold. The different windows represent the various different stories that are often told on film and also can be seen as representing the coming of television, as Jefferies can watch a multitude of "shows" from the comfort of his own apartment.

SPARTACUS based on Howard Fast's popular novel is Stanley Kubrick's glorious masterpiece about a slave uprising in Rome in 70 B.C. Kirk Douglas who also served as executive producer stars as the title character a man born of a slave woman and a slave master who has known nothing but chains his entire life. After being forced to put on a gladiator show--that almost leads to his death--for wealthy Romans including a marvelously conniving Laurence Olivier as the power-hungry Crassus Spartacus leads a slave revolt across Italy that soon has thousands marching on Rome. Meanwhile he has fallen in love with the beautiful Varinia an effervescent Jean Simmons pledging his life to her. Douglas assembled a fabulous all-star cast for the film; in addition to himself Simmons and Olivier terrific performances are turned in by Charles Laughton as the curmudgeonly senator Gracchus John Gavin as the young Julius Caesar Tony Curtis as Antoninus a "singer of songs" with all lines delivered in a beautifully thick New York accent and especially Peter Ustinov an Oscar winner for his portrayal of the businessman Batiatus who always wants to know what's in it for him. Blacklisted writer Dalton Trumbo's melodramatic script and Alex North's thrilling soaring score add a majesty that helps make SPARTACUS one of the finest costume epics to ever come out of Hollywood.

This album finds Dave Hollister s talents in peak form. The first single, One Woman Man is as good as his debut. From a pre-millennial musical landscape cluttered with pop pretenders and ersatz R&B lovermen comes a singer whose songs of the street establish him as a new urban guru. Indeed, Dave Hollister is a musical storyteller. Also an accomplished producer, he has recorded and performed with the likes of Patti LaBelle, Mary J. Blige, Tupac, Usher and perhaps most notably, BLACKstreet. But Hollister s technical prowess, bold lyrical perspective and emotional delivery have never been more in evidence than on Ghetto Hymns (Def Squad/DreamWorks), his solo debut album.

For most people, Plan B is nothing more than a fall-back, a pale imitation of the grand plan that might have been. Maria Bamford, as even casual fans will admit, is not ''most people.'' There's no telling what her Plan A might have entailed (perhaps a one-woman rendition of ''Grey Gardens?''), but Bamford's Plan B turns out to be a virtuoso, one-woman performance of a self-imposed stint in Northwoods exile. Filmed live at the Varsity Theater in Minneapolis, the extra-packed DVD now out from Stand Up! Records has an intimate and theatrical flavor that may feel unexpected to some of Bamford's followers, but skillfully weaves together the most well-wrought portions of her repertoire. More focused than her usual stand-up routine, in Plan B Bamford takes on the story of her own Hollywood life, viewed from the much safer - and possibly much weirder - climes of Duluth, MN. Playing all of the characters, from her parents to her high school nemesis-cum-Target checkout girl, Bamford lovingly skewers her origins, reminding us that, while there may be no place like home, there's really no place like home. Among the most charming aspects of the whole disc, the many fantastic extras reveal a commentary track voiced by Bamford and her proud parents, Joel and Marilyn. The familial trio falls in easily together, watching Plan B, bantering, reminiscing, and occasionally setting the record straight when it comes to the way things were and the way things were... to Maria.

Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins will likely be forever associated with their roles in this bone-chilling masterpiece, based on the novel by Thomas Harris and directed by Jonathan Demme. FBI trainee Clarice Starling (Foster) is sent by her supervisor (Scott Glenn) to interview ferociously intelligent serial killer Hannibal "The Cannibal" Lechter (Hopkins) at his cell in a Maryland mental hospital. The FBI hopes Lechter can provide insight into the mind of killer-at-large, Buffalo Bill (Ted Levine), whose current abductee happens to be the daughter of a senator. Intrigued by Clairice, Lechter demands information about her personal life and in exchange for clues, and the two begin to form a strangely intimate connection, with a girl's life hanging in the balance. Starling is gradually revealed as a woman struggling out of her own darkness, bound to aid the dysfunctional males around her on their own paths of transformation, liberation, and destruction. This is a film of brilliant and disturbing beauty that transcends its B-movie origins (though it does honor them with a cameo appearance by Roger Corman). Its enduring influence has led to a slew of similarly dark-toned serial killer films, and a sequel, HANNIBAL (2001).

In John Ford's 3 GODFATHERS based on Peter B. Kynes's allegorical novel about a trio of bandits Robert Hightower John Wayne Pedro Roca Fuerte Pedro Armendariz and William Kearney aka the Abilene Kid Harry Carey Jr. robs a small-town bank in Arizona under the nose of Sheriff Buck Sweet Ward Bond. Although Abilene is wounded the trio makes a clean getaway with Buck's posse in close pursuit. Realizing that Buck has set a trap for them at the Mojave water tank the bandits head toward Terrapin Tanks but lose the trail and their horses in a terrible sandstorm. Now on foot they find the tanks defunct but come upon a lone covered wagon with a woman Mildred Natwick about to give birth. Although they're able to deliver the baby the mother dies--but not before getting the bandits to promise to protect her child. Ford's sentimental tribute to the great Western icon Harry Carey Sr. The screen dedication reads "To the memory of Harry Carey bright star of the Western sky" who starred twice in silent versions of the story including Ford's 1919 film MARKED MEN 3 GODFATHERS features fine performances by Carey's son and by Wayne who developed his famous persona in part by emulating the elder Carey's onscreen expressions and mannerisms. An air of tender inspiration permeates the film which combines rousing action scenes with surprisingly subtle moments of self-sacrifice redemption and love.

Probably best remembered for the 1956 biblical epic, The Ten Commandments, and his appearance (as himself) in 1950’s Sunset Blvd., Cecil B. DeMille’s remarkable cinematic career stretches back as far as Charlie Chaplin’s. DeMille’s reputation as a demanding perfectionist was made in the early days of silent cinema, guiding the careers of such stars as Gloria Swanson, Mary Pickford, and Wallace Reid. This remarkable collection of vintage DeMille classics – some making their DVD debut - includes the very first film "CB" ever made – 1914’s The Squaw Man – and continues to the end of the silent era, just before sound ushered in an entirely new art form – one in which DeMille, once again, thrived. Bonus Features include rare newsreel footage of DeMille, an interview with Charlton Heston, and the complete 1921 film Miss Lulu Bett – directed by Cecil’s brother, William! The Squaw Man (1914) – 74 mins. *The Virginian (1914) – 50 mins. Carmen (1915) – 56:30 mins. The Cheat (1915) – 59 mins. Joan the Woman (1916) – 133 mins. *The Romance of the Redwoods (1917) – 90 mins. *The Little American (1917) – 65 mins. Old Wives for New (1918) – 71:30 mins. The Whispering Chorus (1918) – 81 mins. Don’t Change Your Husband (1918) – 79 mins. Male and Female (1919) – 115 mins. Why Change Your Wife? (1920) – 91 mins. The Affairs of Anatol (1921) – 117 mins. Manslaughter (1922) – 100 mins. *The Road to Yesterday (1925) – 107 mins. *The Volga Boatman (1926) – 120 mins. BONUS FEATURES Miss Lulu Bett (1921) – 71 mins. Newsreels Interviews * - DVD Premiere Disc One The Squaw Man (1914) – A British captain (Dustin Farnum, recreating his stage role) comes to America and settles out West with an Indian girl (played by a Winnebago Indian woman named Princess Red Wing). DeMille’s first film and one of the first features ever produced. Cecil himself appears as the Faro dealer. 74 mins. The Virginian (1914) – A cowboy (Dustin Farnum of The Squaw Man) must save his friend from the hangman’s noose by exposing the real bad guy (Billy Elmer of Kitty Foyle) before he can get the girl (Farnum’s future wife, Winifred Kingston). 50 mins. Carmen (1915) – Based on the same novel that inspired Bizet’s opera, the story concerns a poor cigarette girl (Metropolitan opera star Geraldine Farrar) who falls for a bullfighter (Pedro de Cordoba of The Ghost Breakers), driving her jealous guardian (the doomed Wallace Reid) to murder. 56:30 mins. The Cheat (1915) – Powerful melodrama about a two-timing wife (Broadway star Fanny Ward in her screen debut) who hooks up with a wealthy – and sadistic – Japanese ivory baron (Sessue Hayakawa of The Bridge on the River Kwai). 59 mins. Disc Two Joan the Woman (1916) – A soldier in World War I (Wallace Reid of The Affairs of Anatol) uncovers Joan of Arc’s sword, leading to her appearance (Geraldine Farrar of Carmen) in a vision and the telling of her life story. 133 mins. The Romance of the Redwoods (1917) – A naive New England girl (the legendary Mary Pickford) moves out West and winds up falling for a stagecoach robber (Elliott Dexter of The Affairs of Anatol). 90 mins. The Little American (1917) – Once again, the great Mary Pickford stars, this time as a young girl who finds herself pursued by a German-American (Jack Holt of San Francisco) and a French-American (Western star, Raymond Hatton) during World War One, leading to international intrigue. 65 mins. Disc Three Old Wives for New (1918) – An unhappy husband (Elliott Dexter of The Romance of the Redwoods) leaves his lazy wife (Sylvia Ashton of Greed) for a younger woman (King Vidor’s wife, Florence) who turns out to be involved in a murder! 71:30 mins. The Whispering Chorus (1918) – An embezzler (Raymond Hatton of The Little American) assumes the identity of a dead man – but winds up being arrested for having murdered himself! David Boreanaz (Angel, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) stars as F.B.I. Agent Seeley Booth, who teams up with forensic anthropologist Dr. Temperance "Bones" Brennan (Emily Deschanel) to solve some of the most baffling and bizarre crimes ever. Booth depends on clues from the living, witnesses and suspects, while Brennan gathers evidence from the dead, relying on her uncanny ability to read clues left behind in the bones of the victims. Their different investigative styles cause the two to frequently clash, creating an undeniable chemistry and just the right touch of dark humor. It begins innocently enough: a politician calls a strike, and the headmaster of a local school inadvertently sabotages it. Soon the men are caught in a power struggle of epic proportions. Robert Lindsay (Horatio Hornblower) is brilliant as the corrupt, egomaniacal Labour party leader Michael Murray. Michael Palin (Monty Python) is superb as the principled, mild-mannered Jim Nelson. Confronted by his own mortality after being diagnosed with virulent form of cancer a disillusioned twenty-something rails against the many disappointments in his life by impulsively purchasing a motorcycle and heading out west instead of taking his doctor's advice to begin immediate treatment. Ben Tyler Joshua Jackson has an unfulfilling job as a high school English teacher and a manuscript that's gathering dust after being rejected by every publisher in town. And while Ben is undeniably comfortable in his relationship with faithful fiance Samantha Liane Balaban he can't help but feeling that there's something in their relationship that he has never truly confronted. Informed by his doctor that he is suffering from a highly malignant form of cancer and has only a 10 chance of survival if he begins treatment immediately Ben rails against his fate by straddling a vintage motorcycle and embarking on a 4000 kilometer journey from Toronto to Tofino B.C. meeting a variety of people who help him understand what it truly means to be alive along the way. Later while hiking in Banff Ben becomes dangerously sick and desperately lost before an intense encounter with a woman named Tracey Emm Gryner convinces him once and for all that he isn't in love with Samantha. In the emotional aftermath of that encounter Ben terminates his relationship with Tracey and makes a pledge to live a lifetime with each passing day. It isn't long before Ben's condition begins to deteriorate however and by the time he finally arrives at mile zero of the Trans-Canada highway he's fresh out of road and seriously close to death.

A revealing and affectionate account of the personal and political lives of the left-wing screenwriters, directors, and actors behind Hollywood's Golden Age. The first comprehensive book about Hollywood's future blacklistees and the hundreds of films they wrote or directed from the dawn of sound movies to the early 1950s, Radical Hollywood traces the political and personal lives of the activists along with the often-decisive impact of their work upon American film's Golden Age. A highly readable, anecdotal history, featuring an insert of classic film stills, , Radical Hollywood describes the story-behind-the-story of such famous films as Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Casablanca, and Woman of the Year, alongside such campy items as The Adventures of Captain Marvel, Sherlock Holmes and the Voice of Terror, and Kiss the Blood off My Hands. Genres like crime and women's films, family cinema, war, animation and, above all, film noir are reconsidered here, with fresh evidence drawn from interviews and recent archival breakthroughs. A long-awaited rediscovery of an overlooked intellectual-artistic milieu, , Radical Hollywood will interest all film-lovers and devotees of political culture. 16 pages b/w photographs.
