The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress was a four-engine heavy bom
... Read more
The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress was a four-engine heavy bomber aircraft developed in the 1930s for the then-United States Army Air Corps (USAAC). Competing against Douglas and Martin for a contract to build 200 bombers, the Boeing entry outperformed both competitors and more than met the Air Corps' expectations. Although Boeing lost the contract because the prototype crashed, the Air Corps was so impressed with Boeing's design that they ordered 13 more B-17s for further evaluation. From its introduction in 1938, the B-17 Flying Fortress evolved through numerous design advances. The B-17 was primarily employed by the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) in the daylight precision strategic bombing campaign of World War II against German industrial and military targets. The United States Eighth Air Force based at Thorpe Abbotts airfield in England and the Fifteenth Air Force based in Italy complemented the RAF Bomber Command's nighttime area bombing in Operation Pointblank to help secure air superiority over the cities, factories and battlefields of Western Europe in preparation for Operation Overlord. The B-17 also participated to a lesser extent in the War in the Pacific where it conducted raids against Japanese shipping and airfields. From its pre-war inception, the USAAC (later USAAF) touted the aircraft as a strategic weapon; it was a potent, high-flying, long-range bomber that was able to defend itself, and to return home despite extensive battle damage. It quickly took on mythic proportions, and widely circulated stories and photos of B-17s surviving battle damage increased its iconic status. With a service ceiling greater than any of its Allied contemporaries, the B-17 established itself as an effective weapons system, dropping more bombs than any other U.S. aircraft in World War II. Of the 1.5 million metric tons of bombs dropped on Germany by U.S. aircraft, 640,000 tons were dropped from B-17s.

These are the gloves reminiscent of the original A-9A Winter Flying Gauntlets worn by USAAF gunners during World War II. Provided to the U.S. Army between 1942 and 1944, the A-9A was issued to crew members charged with defending bombers, such as the iconic B-17, from attacking fighter aircraft. The gloves' separate trigger fingers and plush interiors provided gunners dexterity and warmth at high altitudes while manning the famed Browning machine gun. Made with vegetable-tanned 100% Merino sheepskin, these gloves' shearling interiors keep hands swaddled in luxurious warmth; the collars can be pulled down to cover the wrists. The separate forefingers offer nimble movement in cold weather without compromising warmth, unlike mittens that can't grasp objects or fully fingered gloves that release body heat. Enhanced for modern wear, the hidden seams provide a modern, slim look. Made in the U.S. Rugged Castano or Rugged Whiskey. Sizes S, M, L, XL, XXL. (4 oz.)

The B-17 Flying Fortress dropped more bombs than any other
... Read more
The B-17 Flying Fortress dropped more bombs than any other U.S. aircraft in World War II and is arguably the iconic bomber of that epic conflict. This 80-page, perfect bound volume, packed with 200 period photographs, delivers a visual overview of the development and use of the legendary four-engine warplane. During the 10 years in which it was produced, a total of 12,731 of the B-17 heavy bombers rolled off the assembly lines of Boeing, Douglas Aircraft, and Lockheed s subsidiary Vega. First flown in 1935, the aircraft was repeatedly modified, upgraded, and perfected in response to experience gained in the European conflict. While the gross weight of the developmental Y1B-17 was 34,873 lbs, the final model of the aircraft, the B-17G, had a gross weight nearly double that, of 65,500 lbs a testimony to the innovations incorporated in the Fortress. In addition to the steady technical advance of the B-17, this volume also highlights the roles played by individual aircraft and their crews, such as the Memphis Belle, which completed 25 missions over enemy territory and starred in a wartime Hollywood documentary, and the Stage Door Canteen, whose christening by Winston Churchill s daughter attracted such cinema greats as Edward G. Robinson and Vivien Leigh. Photos of the All American, which returned safely to base despite having its tail nearly sheared off by a Messerschmitt, serve as a reminder of the incredible toughness of the Flying Fortress and the uncommon skill of its crewmen. At a time of unprecedented trial, Americans of the greatest generation stood together behind their armed forces. Vivid testimony to this unity of purpose of free individuals are the historic color pictures of the 5 Grand Boeing s 5,000th B-17 which flew into battle covered in the signatures of the hundreds of individual men and women who designed and built her. An unmatched, lavishly illustrated account of one of the greatest warplanes of all time, The B-17 Flying Fortress in Action is a must have! Perfect binding. Illustrated with 200 vintage photographs, plus color profiles and detailed line drawings; 80 pages.

LexJet's next-generation Sunset Photo eSatin 300g is a premium-quality, resin-coated inkjet photo paper that professional photographers rave about. They like it because the prints they deliver to their customers feel noticeably thicker, heavier, and more durable than mass-market inkjet photo papers; the latest generation is even thicker than before at 11.5 mil. The slightly textured, satin (or luster) surface is like the E-surface papers that were popular in darkroom printing. The print surface doesn’t show fingerprints or reflect glare like glossy papers. This paper’s excellent ink retention properties produce an exceptionally large color gamut for bright, realistically saturated colors and accurate skin tones. Plus, the latest version has an even wider color gamut and an improved white point for greater contrast.LexJet Sunset Photo eSatin 300g can be used on many pigment and dye ink printers from Canon, Epson, and HP, and is engineered for the latest inksets, including Canon Lucia, Epson UltraChrome K3 HDR and HP Vivera.Color profiles are available for many models. All rolls require a 3-in. spindle or core adapter.LexJet Sunset Photo eSatin is a 2008 Hot One Award winner.
