3YK meets the '50's in this hep-cat racer. Groovy, daddy-o! In the far future as Boss Game Studios sees it, jaded technophiles blend turbocharged racing with the coolest auto styles from the Age of Elvis. The result: some of the most reckless roddin' fun to hit the N64 in many a moon. Given the oodles of racers on our favorite platform, those are high words of praise indeed. Visually, SR64 (formerly Stunt Racer 3000) is an ambitious blend of '50s car kitsch (jumbo grilles, wood paneling) with futuristic roller-coaster action on 12 cleverly designed tracks. The game looks great, especially in the letterboxed high-res mode (you'll need an Expansion Pak). Undergirding the warp-speed hijinks is a rock-solid game engine based in World Driver: Championship, Boss Game's 1999 critical success. Minimize

GT, and then some...

Author's Rating: Rating: 5/5 stars

Pros: Excellent Graphics, and great in-depth gameplay for an N64 racer.

Cons: Bad music and some strange driving physics.

The Bottom Line:
WDC is not Gran Turismo, but a good substitute that also blends in the team aspect of Ridge Racer Type 4.

Author's Review
World Driver tries to be the Gran Turismo of the N64, but instead, it plays a lot more like Gran Turismio crossed with Ridge Racer Type 4.

You start by picking a team (like R4), and choosing your championship. The main goal of the game is to try to increse your rank to #1. To do this, you must earn points from races to increase your rank. When your rank increases, you have better team options and cars to choose from.

Graphically, WDC has the best graphics for an N64 racer WITHOUT an expansion pak. Yeah, there's a little draw-in, but so did Gran Turismo. This game has a lot of eye-candy to go around. The game in normal resolution as an overall good framerate, and only chops at specific moments (like too many cars) or areas (like too many skyscrapers in one location). The framerate starts to go down in turns when you have it in letterbox mode. It's tolerable, though.

The sound is probably the worst feature of WDC. While the sound effects are good, the music has a really bad sound to it. Just turn it off.

The play control takes some getting used to. The game want's to have a feel like Gran Turismo, and it does, but the developers went overboard with the oversteer. You'll spin like a TVR Cebera (GT and GT2 players should know) in the dirt many times in this game.

This game has a suprising amount of tracks and depth, considering it was made by the same people who made the 5-course Top Gear Rally. Racing fans should get a lot out of this game, but they shouldn't expect Gran Turismo.
