Pros: clear instruction, learn to play poker!

Cons: No simple save mode.

The Bottom Line:
Great fun and a cheap introduction to high stakes gambling!

I bought this game to learn about the different types of Poker and so far I am loving it..

A budget game at £12 UK (about $20 US) and this is the best value you could imagine. A great way to get a quick gambling fix without the high stakes! With 4 different types of Poker (Texas Hold’em, Omaha Hold’em, Seven-Card Stud and Five-Card Draw) plus slot machines there is plenty of game to play.

The graphics are good an clear (obviously no fighting or driving to contend with, just plain old cards), when sat around the table you get a few different face to look at and thier faces greay out when bust and they can rant and rave when the stakes get a little high.

The game has some simple sound effects. A choice of 5 different types of music, my favourite being the banjo tune, this is great when playing the cowboy as you get the occassional "yeehaa" when he thinks he has you beat. Other sounds are some simple ambience and sound effects such as the sound of the chips scattering on the table and slot machines. Each of the different characters have thier 'signature' sounds of grunts and groans and cheers depending on the hand stroke result of a round.

There is a tutorial mode for each game, showing you the different hands and order of strength.

GAme modes are quickplay and career! You star with $20k and you go to town. Pick your games, win lose and even borrow money from loan sharks. Winning at some games provide access to bigger tournaments and table, I am a novice so I've not got far.

It's difficult to explain the gameplay of such a game without explaining the rules of poker. BUt here goes: In both Quick Play and Career Modes you play against 3 virtual opponents and you are given a pot of money to play with (Quick play $100,000!) With Texas hold'em for instance you then bet, raise and check on each round as the Flop (first 3 cards), Turn (1 card) and River (1 Card) are all laid out. Each player can raise or check the current bet if they want to stay in. If you think the cards aren't going your way or the stakes are getting a little high for your hand, then you can fold. I am sticking to Hold'em at the moment as I want to get used to one game of Poker at a time!

I thoroughly recommend this title and would even recommend buying a secondhand or reduced price gameboy just to play the game (there is a store near me selling GBAs for £20!)

I only own two games currently, this one and TigerWoods 2004. Both are great whiling away a few hours in hotel rooms while on the road

I suppose the multiplayer mode is good, though I don't know anyone else with a GBA!! I am getting old!

Only gripe is that you have to remember/write down a long combination of cards to save your game. No simple save option, with out a pen and paper.
