Kat Ellis's (Debra Messing) worst nightmare is about to come true. Not only is her younger, half-sister, Amy (Amy Adams), getting married before her, but to add insult to injury, the groom's (Jack Davenport) best man is Kat's ex-fiancie, Jeffrey (Jeremy Sheffield). Two years after being dumped, Kat is a single New Yorker and can't bear to attend the festivities at her parent's London home alone, so she does the next best thing: she hires an escort to play her boyfriend. Her rented date, Nick (Dermot Mulroney), fits the bill perfectly. He's handsome, intelligent, well spoken, intuitive, and a perfect gentleman--a virtual bargain at $6,000. The plan? Make Kat's ex sorry that he ever let her go.

But the plan takes a turn when Kat finds herself attracted to Nick, and the feeling seems to be mutual. The Wedding Effect
| Author's Rating: |
|
Pros: acting, romance
Cons: comedy
The Bottom Line:
Watch it on Cable, its not a very good movie
Kat Ellis (Debra Messing) decides not to go to her sisters weddding without a date to save face in her family. In order to do this she hires a date to accompany her to the wedding. Things go awry as her escort, the seemingly daring Nick Mercer (Dermot Mulroney) takes her to heights she has never experienced.
This acting in this movie is pretty good. The fact that she is all alone and helpless is quite believeable, also quite believeable is Dermot's role as the knight-in-shining-armor, just a classified ad away. The only reason this movie is barely watchable is that Debra Messing draws us into her psyche and pours out the minimal emotion she can express out for the camera to capture. If the film was nothing else, it was genuine.
The plot is ok, seeing as its basically a boy meets girl scenario. The comedy is not natural, even the funny parts of this movie are not so funny, more like awkward moments. Also the title implies that wedding bring people together in some way but in actuality the wedding effect was not what one would expect. A title like The Wedding would have been better in my opinion. So basically we have an average romance comedy that isnt funny and has an underdeveloped plot.
