300K and counting on my 2002 TDI.

Author's Rating: Rating: 5/5 stars

Pros: Fuel Economy, comfort, reliability, no rust after

Cons: A few nit picky parts break, paint doesn't last forever

The Bottom Line:
Awesome car.  Best one I've ever owned.

I love this car.  I bought it used as a redeployment present to myself.  It was rather high mileage at the time but a properly maintained TDI engine will run indefinately.

I love the MPG this car gives, it's almost always over 40 and has hit 50 more than once.  It's the most comfortable car I've ever owned and I can't imagine a better car to drive on a long trip.  The creature comforts on my model (GLS w/luxury package) are quite impressive.  Remote keyless locks, powere everything, leather, heated seats, sunroof, cruise, and nifty well arranged steering wheel buttons for the cruise and radio.  One of my favorites is the neat in-dash cup holder.  Many hate it as it obscures the radio but I love it, it'll just about hold a 5 gallon bucket securely.

My vanity light on the driver side broke (don't care).  The center console/armrest broke (propped it up with a cheap plastic box).  That's about it.

The car now has 305,000+ miles and counting.  I drive it everywhere and have no intention of getting rid of it.

Some have reliability problems, I don't.  Change your oil with a GOOD synthetic at recommended intervals and don't let your 17 yr old drive the car.  Change out your timing belt every 80K miles.  It'll last a long, long, LONG time.  The timing belt issue is expensive but $600 every 3 years or so isn't all that bad.  A clutch will last a lifetime if properly used.  Brakes are cheap and easy to do yourself (ceramic pads last forever).
