The GTI continues into 2002 with a host of changes. Last years GLS and GLX model designations have been dropped. The GTI models include: 1.8T, VR6, or the newly released 337 Edition. The 1.8T four-cylinder turbo engine has been upgraded from 150-hp to 180-hp. The optional automatic transmission, available only on the 1.8T, has been upgraded to a five-speed Tiptronic unit. Last years GLX equipment is now grouped into various option packages. Late in the model year, the original 174-hp VR6 was replaced with a 24-valve VR6 with 200-hp mated to a new six-speed manual transmission. A new Premium CD stereo system with both cassette and CD players will also arrive later in the model year, and will be standard on the 1.8T and VR6 models.
