The Volkswagen GTI was redesigned in mid-year of 1999 and returns for the 2000 model year with a few small changes. The GTI is available in three hatchback models: GLS, GLS 1.8T and GLX. The GLS comes standard with a 2.0 litre 4-cylinder engine while the GLX keeps its peppy 2.8 litre VR6 engine that produces 174 hp. The GLS 1.8T boasts a trubo gas engine producing 150-hp. The GLS is the only one available with an optional four speed automatic transmission. Standard on both models are daytime running lights, a theft deterrent system and child seat tether anchors. A traction control system was added to the GLX. Some of the optional features offered on the GLS include a Partial Leather Package, a Cold Weather Package and the Monsoon Sound System.
