A larger engine, revised styling, and available side airbags headline 2004 for Toyotas smallest SUV. RAV4 retains 4-cyl power, but swaps a 148-hp 2.0 for a 161-hp 2.4. It comes with manual transmission or extra-cost automatic and a choice of front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive without low-range gearing. An antiskid/traction-control system is new for 04. Its standard, as is ABS, which had been optional. Rear disc brakes instead of drums and a tire-pressure monitor are also new standard features. Available front torso side airbags and head-protecting curtain side airbags are another first for RAV4. The suspension is retuned, exterior styling and interior trim are altered slightly, and power mirrors, steering-wheel audio controls, and variable-intermittent windshield wipers are now standard. Leather upholstery, alloy wheels, and sunroof remain optional.

Great car for my wife

Pros: Reliable, comfortable, easy to drive & handle.
Cons: Rear hatch opens to the side.
The Bottom Line:
A great car for overall and general driving.
My wife and I purchased a 2004 Toyota RAV4 in December of 2004. After researching and test driving numerous similar cars we finally settled on this car.
Primarily we purchased this car because of the great luck we've had with other Toyotas. I previously had a 1995 Toyota Camry and just recently got rid of it after putting over 205,000 miles on the Camry. So far we've put about 40,000 miles on our RAV4 with no problems what so ever.
There are some problems that I don't like, although they are all minor. The rear seats get a little tight if you need to put in a car seat and as far as I know there is no way to remove them completely - only a way to fold them up. The rear hatch opens to the side, rather than upward like in most cars so it is a little difficult to transport large items inside the vehicle.
As for performance, acceleration, handling, etc my wife and I have no complaints at all. I never feel as if I'm going to tip or roll like you do in some SUVs. The automatic all wheel drive makes it easy to drive in any type of road condition. Doesn't do too badly on gas... we get an average of about 22-25 miles per gallon.
Overall, very happy with the car and would certainly consider buying another Toyota in the future.
