The 4-cyl LE and SE have standard manual transmission. Automatic transmission is optional for those models and standard on the 4-cyl XLE and all V6 models. V6 SE and all XLE models have antilock 4-wheel disc brakes; ABS is optional for other Camrys. Also optional on all models are front side airbags and head-protecting curtain side airbags, which can be combined with an available antiskid system on V6 models. The power-adjustable brake and accelerator pedals are available only with automatic transmission as a $120 option. Other options include a navigation system with dashboard touch screen. Camrys SE model includes a firmer suspension and special trim. LE models join other Camrys with standard remote keyless entry and, at midyear, a power driver seat. LEs have 15-inch wheels, other models have 16s. The ES 300 from Toyotas luxury Lexus division shares Camrys basic design. Minimize

Old or new - still the best buy for your buck

Author's Rating: Rating: 5/5 stars

Pros: Maintains value better than competitors
Still a valuable trade-in
Doesn't "act its age"

Cons: No good reason to buy a new car! The old one runs fine.

The Bottom Line:
An excellent car that I would buy again "if I knew then what I know now."

We have been a Toyota family for a couple decades now. Toyota's reliabilty and having the right car to meet our needs at various times in our lives is what has kept us coming back. Our first batch consisted of the Toyota Tacoma, the Corolla, and the Tercel for the teens in the family. We traded in the Corolla for a Sienna when we noticed that the kids' knees were up around their ears in the back seat. When the kids were finally out on their own (taking the Tercel with them) we downsized from the Sienna to the Camry.

We have a 2003 Toyota Camry that we bought new. Except for a little dent in the side (oops - my fault) it still looks new. It drives as smoothly and as quietly as it did seven years ago, and looks as if it'll keep on going for another ten or more. I have never seen a car with over 100,000 miles on it that drove so smoothly. No hesitations or backfires, no sloppy shocks. After all these years it's still a wonderful ride.

With all the bad press Toyota had to endure earlier in the year, I thought it might be time to speak out FOR the beleaguered car manufacturer. Besides the efforts they put into recallls and redesigns, they weathered the criticisms pretty well. It seemed a little like a political campaign for a while, with competing car ads weighing in about how superior they were over Toyota - and they always seemed to mention Toyota (particularly the Camry) by name.

Although we've been thinking about buying another Toyota, we don't think we'll trade this one in. After all, the grand-daughter gets her learner's permit this year and the car has another decade (at least) in it! And yes, we'd trust this great car with one of our greatest treasures. :)
