SR5, Sport, and Limited models are offered. Their liftgate includes 4Runners traditional power tailgate window. A 245-hp 4.0 liter replaces a 183-hp 3.4 as the V6 engine. 4Runners first V8 is available in all models and with 2WD or 4WD. The 4.7-liter V8 has less horsepower but more torque than the V6. Both engines use automatic transmission, the V6 a 4 speed, the V8 a new 5 speed. The V6s 4WD can be left engaged on dry pavement. V8s have all-wheel drive. Both systems include low-range gearing and 4Runners first hill descent control. New hill ascent control is standard on all models, as is a traction/antiskid system and antilock brakes, now with 4-wheel discs. SR5 has 16-inch wheels, the others have 17s. Sports have a nonfunctional hood scoop.

Landcruiser is leaving - who cares?
| Author's Rating: |
|
Pros: smooth and powerful V8, thoughtful features, bulletproof Toyota build quality
Cons: so-so mileage, styling quibbles, lack of vanity mirrors
Bottom Line:
Get this truck if you want off-road capability, above average street manners and near limitless V8 power. Toyota really nailed the new drivetrain technology. Couldn't be happier.

2003 4runner - from the head, not the heart

Pros: drivetrain polish, brakes, full-boat airbags, fit/finish, computer is in charge, rolldown rear window, AWD
Cons: somewhat trendy exterior, mileage
Bottom Line:
I would recommend this 4runner to anyone, unless you need third row seating, or your off-roading never exceeds jumping the boulevard to snatch a parking space at Walmart.

2003 4Runner Loaded w/Positive Changes
| Author's Rating: |
|
Pros: Sharp styling both interior and exterior, big improvements in size and cargo capacity.
Cons: None noted.
Bottom Line:
I think I made the right choice w/4Runner. Knowing your mechanic helps, but I don't want another first name basis relationship with every Toyota technician, like I had w/Mercedes.
