Control Lockup solved only by unplugging it !

Author's Rating: Rating: 1/5 stars

Pros: Basic functions work as intuitively expected.

Cons: The controls locked up twice, so I returned it.

The Bottom Line:
Consider older technology if you don't need the newest features. If you see no control lockup problems after "overnite-on" tests, then you have a great value player.

Author's Review
I wanted a less than $100 DVD player, and at least three separate sales associates at Best Buy steered me to this player given my wish list. Besides budget, I thought I may want progressive scan capability in the future, I wanted a few other formats read (ie. DVD+R, DVD+RW, etc.), zoom, and a good namebrand.

I had really very little time to check out all the extra features, because frozen controls diverted me.

On two occasions, the controls froze up to varying degrees. Both times it was when the player was left on with a disk in it for more than 12 hours. On the second occasion, none of the front panel buttons did anything (not even ON/OFF), and the remote only allowed access to secondary functions and menus such as setup. The cursor wouldn't move to select a DVD selection or play.

After checking the other review on this site with a similar problem, I quickly took the machine back to Best Buy. Maybe mine was a rare defect, but I'm not taking any chances. I've decided to go with the slightly older players with no progressive scan. When I get my new, super TV, I'll likely get a DVD player to match anyway, and this Toshiba SD3950 DVD player will stay with the kid's TV. I'm going to buy Sony's DVP-NS425P. I'll let you know if it's any better.

I've always found it to be true, and this experience is one example, that the odds favor reliability on machines that have been around a while. A certain number of all machines will have defects, however more defects are solved the longer a machine is produced.
