A notoriously troubled production notwithstanding, the controversial cult classic THE WICKER MAN is now regarded as a classic of British cinema. Edward Woodward stars as Sergeant Howie, a naive young police officer sent to Summerisle, a secluded island off the coast of Scotland, to investigate the disappearance of a young girl named Rowan. When he arrives there, he finds a very tight-knit community that is mistrustful and hostile to outsiders. No one is willing to even acknowledge Rowan's disappearance. Soon, Howie begins to realize that the town might, in fact, be a strange pagan cult, one given to unbridled sexuality and possible human sacrifice. Seeking an audience with the oddly civilized Lord Summerisle (Christopher Lee), Howie hopes to get to the bottom of the mystery, but instead he finds something more shocking than he could have ever imagined.

Written by Anthony Shaffer (SLEUTH, DEATH ON THE NILE), Robin Hardy's eerie film paints a disturbing portrait of an almost prehistoric, multi-d... Neo-Pagan Cult Classic

Author's Rating: Rating: 5/5 stars

Pros: Unsurpassed photography, great soundtrack, excellent acting, surrealist movie making at it's finest.

Cons: A bit dated with time. Lacks the impact it had when first released.

The Bottom Line:
Don't miss this one.

Author's Review
One of the best all time neo-pagan films. The photography shot on location is stunning. Christopher Lee's acting is brilliant. The music is wonderful is brilliant, if not a bit dated. The overall feel of the film is surrealistic and very artsy. It is one of the few musical "horror" films, and really, while stunning, provocative- not really very scary at all.

The story itself seems as if it came straight from the pages of James Frazer's "Golden Bough". It is a portrayal of a small village that have reclaimed their pagan roots, cut off ties with the modern world and reverted to "The Old Religion" of nature and goddess worship. Edward Woodward is a puritanical police office selected for the role of "Sacred Fool" for the town's annual ritual of fertility, and he plays his role superbly.

The true brilliance of the film come through in the photography. Dreamy and erotic, full of symbols and metaphor. Britt Ekland is a beautiful goddess and sexual initiatrix whose performance and sensuality is stunning. For me, one of the most erotic sequences of the film is a close up of two snails having sex, while the most beautiful is a ritual where maidens are dancing around a fire in hopes of conceiving through parthenogenesis. The whole film oozes with sensuality, eroticism and sexual ritual.

The film is inspiring and arousing. The kind of movie that makes you want to get up and sing: "Give me that Old Time Religion".
