According to legend, there was once a magical sword stuck in a sturdy rock, and whoever removed it would soon be deemed the king of all Britons. Disney's classic animated feature, SWORD IN THE STONE, tells the tale of the plucky lad who managed just that feat. Deep in the woods of medieval England, a young orphan boy called Wart has his heart set on becoming a knight's squire. Once he happens across the eccentric wizard Merlin, however, his future path changes significantly; along with his intelligent and chatty owl Archimedes, Merlin trains young Wart in the ways of wit, wisdom, and heart, preparing him for a life in the upper-echelons of English royalty. Just as his lessons are drawing to an end, Wart gets to try his hand at the legendary sword, and upon successfully removing it, goes on to become the nation's famed King Arthur. A sweet story about the might of the mind, the 1963 film features the voices of Sebastian Cabot (THE JUNGLE BOOK) and Rickie Sorensen (TARZAN), and lush, colorful imagery in th...

One of Disney's best

Pros: Great lessons, Disney animation, fun characters and story.
Cons: None, this is Disney at its best.
I have this fabulous movie on tape and was almost amazed when I found out that it was made in 1963. I new that The Sword In The Stone was an old movie, but I didn't realize just how old it was. What this has shown me is just how wonderful Disney really is; and how their movies transcend time.
The wonders of this movie surround the adventures of Wart (Arthur) up until the time that he becomes King. It starts when he meets the crazy Merlin who decides to show Wart the wonders of the world.
The amazing thing about this movie is, of course, the great job with the animation. While done in 1963 and grainy by todays standards the animation is still wonderful. Everything is beautifully rendered and there is no lack of detail.
In the story itself there are also several gems. The Story tackles many of the problems that children face while they are growing up: checking their abilities (jumping as squirrels), attraction to others (the squirrel that falls in love with Wart), and the wonder, plus hazards, of exploring (as a bird and a fish). But Wart must also deal with his chores and he learns about friendship and helping each other out.
This movie also contains an assortment of characters that are hysterical and fun. From the wolf to the squirrels and Madam Mimm this movie is filled with the character style and humor that Disney is now famous for. These characters, their interactions, and the things they do add a great deal to the movie.
I just love this movie. I have watched it countless times and every time I play it people who walk in recognize it instantly and sit down to watch while remembering times they have watched it before. This is a definite Disney Classic.
