John Frankenheimer's brilliant adaptation of Richard Condon's Cold-War satire, THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE is the director's best film, both a coruscating thriller and a razor-sharp satire of political hysteria that captures the turbulent mood of the 1960s. Packed with sly details, such as the liberal senator "bleeding" milk when he's shot, the film demands repeated viewings.

Laurence Harvey stars as Sergeant Raymond Shaw, whose U.S. army unit is captured while fighting in Korea, taken to Manchuria, and brainwashed by Chinese communists. The men return to the U.S. with no conscious memory of their experience, and Shaw is awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for bravery. But when Captain Bennett Marco (Frank Sinatra) starts having nightmares, he begins an authorized investigation into what happened in Manchuria and eventually reveals that the sergeant's brainwashing has transformed him into an unconscious assassin who can be triggered by his communist controllers at will. The Manchurian Candidate - You’ll Never Look at a Deck of Cards the Same Way…

Author's Rating: Rating: 5/5 stars

Pros: Angela Landsbury, great story, Sinatra and Harvey acceptable

Cons: other women in the cast used poorly and not enough

Bottom Line:
For a version that doen't give away the whole story up-front, the original is more suspenseful as the story takes it's time rather than showing it's cards up front. Read More at Epinions.com

Left, left, left, right, left...

Author's Rating: Rating: 5/5 stars

Pros: Brilliantly made political thriller and indictment of McCarthyism.

Cons: Well, there is that odd Janet Leigh monologue...

Bottom Line:
One of the best films ever about the American political system and a stunning indictment of how easy it is to corrupt. Read More at Epinions.com

The Manchurian Candidate: So Good, It Made Women Societies Truly Look Evil

Author's Rating: Rating: 5/5 stars

Pros: Frankenheimer's direction, Angela Lansbury and Laurence Harvey.

Cons: Frank Sinatra's semi-lame acting, action sequence.

Bottom Line:
Could of easily been a Manchurian Mess - but the movie is the best psychological, social, and political thriller to have ever been made. Read More at Epinions.com

THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE had a life of its own.

Author's Rating: Rating: 5/5 stars

Cons: Some people may not care for its message or bleak vision.

Bottom Line:
THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE is the most artistically renowned (if least influential) political thriller ever made in Americ because few people were able to see it for 25 years. Read More at Epinions.com
