The rags-to-riches story of housewife Stacey Baker comes to life in this engaging documentary. Pros: well directed documentary

Are you the "Girl Next Door" and aspire to be a porn star? This film is one you can relate to. If you aren't, this is a documentary unlike any other and definitely worth seeing. The film directed by Christine Fugate (director of Natural Causes, a thriller/suspense film and documentaries Southern Sex, Mother Love, and Tobacco Blues) provides a real human look at Stacy Baker/Valentine, a housewife turned porn icon.
Growing up in Tulsa, OK she felt her only option was to get married and become a domestic goddess. Her abusive pervert/hubby introduced her to pornography and within months she posed for Hustler's Sept. 1996 issue. Her career was off and she found the courage to leave her marriage. Imagine a sexy rags to riches story.
The VCA's (a prominent porn film company) contract girl is more than just a lust inducing body. This film shows the woman behind the actress with a surprisingly unbiased gaze. She has to face the fact tha men only want sex and only expect sex from you when you are in the "industry". Her on again/off again boyfriend Julian, another porn star, can't even face his insecurities. Trust can't be established when you are paid to have sex with other people. As she tattooed on her neck, Trust No One. It's the only way not to get hurt.
How can a woman's self image survive? It doesn't. You virtually experience her series of cosmetic surgery (very graphic) and therapy sessions. You will be disturb by her pain and confusion. Fugate takes this film seriously and allows us feel sympathetic towards Valentine. Other films on the industry, most notably Boogie Nights and the Anabel Chong Story, aren't as mesmerizing and honest.
The film also provides many humorous moments. The interview featuring her parents is priceless. The music also gave me a chuckle. pay close attention to the words. The film features the song "Ordinary Girl" by Naked Wish.
A surprising good film that makes you think.
