The goal of The New Tetris is to collect as many lines as possible. You clear lines by completely filling horizontal lines with puzzle pieces that drop from the top of the screen. You can rotate 'em and move 'em left and right to drop 'em in place. As the number of lines you have collected increases, pieces drop faster, so watch out! When your piece-pile stacks to the top of the screen, your career as a Tetris tycoon comes to an abrupt halt. If you're a Tetris fan, The New Tetris will take your obsession to a whole new level! Pros: Easy to learn, challenging to master, instantly addictive and fun

Cons: Your Mac and Cheese will burn on the stove while you play "just one more time"

I started playing New Tetris for N64 about a year ago at my friend Tim's house, and although I've never played ANY video games before in my life (except the Arcade Galaga in my dentist's office in Junior High), I was instantly addicted. Every day I'd try to schmoo my way home with him from work, and play Tetris. Want to go out to eat? Want to see a movie? No. Tetris. Tetris. I've never been addicted to ANYTHING like I have this. It's amazing.

I eventually broke down and bought an N64 of my own, just to play this. Big outlay of money, but man, this game is amazing.

What's so great about it?

1) The multiplayer option. You can play solo, of course, but the best way is to play against three other people. You can play normal rules, or you can play with "garbage"...that means that the lines y'all clear get dumped on one of the other unfortunate saps you're playing against. You can aim the garbage all at one person, or you can let the game randomly play "hot potato" which dumps the lines on the person who hasn't cleared any lines in a while. It's a mean way to play, sure, but that's what love is all about, isn't it?

2) The "wonders"....as you advance through levels of total lines cleared, you'll get different backgrounds, which are okay--it starts out with Mayan backgrounds (your blocks you clear out are the building blocks of a Mayan Temple), and then goes to Greek and Japanese and Celtic and eventually to Russian (seven wonders total). With each level you unlock, you get new backgrounds and new music---the music is actually really cool--the best I've heard for a video game (again, limited experience here with non-Tetris games...). The music has a nice techno kinda beat that sticks in your head for hours, and gives you nightmares of blocks falling and you scrambling to clear them. I'm not kidding. I like it anyway. Tetris should be your lifeblood.

3) Bonus lines--instead of just clearing things line by line, you can make squares--if they're 4 blocks by 4 blocks, with no pokies sticking out, then you get extra points when you clear those blocks. It's a quick way to make more points and make sure you beat your friends, who are suckers for not knowing how to make the blocks. It just makes the game that much more challenging and allows for more strategy than previous versions of Tetris.

This gets my absolute highest recommendation--I *KNOW* you think Tetris sounds lame, but it's amazingly addictive, and if you're ever in some kind of leg cast and can't walk for a few weeks, you have no better way to spend your time. Leave "War and Peace" for the saps who don't have an N64.
