The goal of The New Tetris is to collect as many lines as possible. You clear lines by completely filling horizontal lines with puzzle pieces that drop from the top of the screen. You can rotate 'em and move 'em left and right to drop 'em in place. As the number of lines you have collected increases, pieces drop faster, so watch out! When your piece-pile stacks to the top of the screen, your career as a Tetris tycoon comes to an abrupt halt. If you're a Tetris fan, The New Tetris will take your obsession to a whole new level! Building wonders of the world; line by line.

Pros: Many new features that weren't in the old game, more music, and better graphics.

Cons: No speed variations.

Author's Review
The New Tetris was the very first game I ever played on the Nintendo 64. At first I Thought the intent was to get the traditional 4 lines at once like in the original Tetris. But, in reading the instruction book, I find it's totally different yet refreshingly familiar.

The object of the game it to get as many lines as possible. After you get so many thousand lines cumulatively between all players, you are awarded with on of the seven wonders of the world.

Basics
In this game, the way to get multiple lines is to create a cube out of 4 of the same block. It needs to be a 4x4 unit made up of 4 different blocks. When you do this, each line you take off will be worth six to nine lines. It's pretty difficult to explain here without the diagrams but an easy concept if you have the instructions in front of you.

Another bonus is the ability to have a block in reserve that you can switch to when needed. For instance, you are in desperate need of a long block and you just so happen to have saved one from when you didn't need it so badly. It's a great tool and makes the game a snap.

You have many music files to choose from and the background changes depending upon how many wonders you have completed. There are three modes of single player game play to choose from:
Sprint
The object to sprint it to get as many lines as possible within 3 minutes.

Ultra
In ultra you go until you reach 150 lines

Marathon
In marathon you go until you can't recover and your stack hits the top. The speed gradually increases with the number of lines accumulated. My record is somewhere just under 400 lines; my father has gotten around 600. (And after he played the original for years and has it mastered I should expect no less.)

MULTI-PLAYER
The multi-player games simply incorporate what you do in single player. Only you have the option to throw "garbage" on your opponent. The garbage comes from underneath instead of dropping from the top. The last thing about multi-player is that the winner gets the lines won by the loser.
