I Want My Corporate Email Now!!

Author's Rating: Rating: 3/5 stars

Pros: Simple. Straight forward. Your Corporate email is seconds away.

Cons: PC's desktop Inbox gets hammered by system messages all day. AT&T: slow phone support.

The Bottom Line:
This unit is great for the professional on the go who needs his e-mail NOW and the ability to reply quickly.

To contrast the other review I did on the Hitachi G1000 Pocket PC, I bring to you my opinion of the "other side". Simplicity, my friends. The Blackberry is what it is: Easy to use, straight forward, practical, instant. This unit is your Phone, Your Calendar, Your Contacts, Your Task List, and a few other handy features as well. Keep in mind, even though you get instant exposure to your Corporate e-mail in almost real time, your messages are actually being "forwarded" or "redirected" to your device. If you delete a message on the handheld, it's still in your Inbox on your desktop PC, (I tested it with Exchange 2000 and Outlook 2003 as my client), although the messages do get marked as "read". Your other stuff gets updated or "sync-ed" when you set the unit in it's cradle.

I'll be honest, this unit, when working, is great..but getting there has been a battle. AT&T is our provider for this device, and we've had problems galore with it. As an IT pro, I've spent WAY too much time on the phone with AT&T support fixing issues that involved downloading entirely new desktop software and updated versions of the Operating System (twice). At your desk, your Inbox is regularly pounded with emails containing system data for the unit, which quickly get forwarded out of the Inbox to the Blackberry...but with visual or audio alerts activated in Outlook, you know of each one's passing.

I do not use this device myself, I support my boss who uses it. He loves it! This unit is nearly an "ambilical cord" connection to your Corporate Email, and definitely its best selling point as well. There's no pen to tap the screen with, all the controls you use are on the side with a "scroll wheel" and another all-purpose button beside it. It has good security options: you can set the unit to "lock" when idle and password protect it to keep the bad guys out. It does not play Mp3's or movies, but who needs that anyway? :) The phone is not comfy to the human ear for long conversations.
