Norton AntiVirus 2009 is the fastest, lightest antivirus solution you can buy. Rapid pulse updates and the innovative Norton Insight architecture dramatically improve performance while helping to ensure that you're protected from the threats. Norton AntiVirus stays out of your way while you work or play. It automatically suspends all non-critical tasks and alerts when you're enjoying games and movies. And while Web-based attacks may be the single fastest growing type of online threat, Symantec's patent-pending Browser Protection lets you surf the Internet with confidence.

Do not download Norton Antivirus 2009 Crippleware!

Pros: Based on my years of prior experience, it should provide good virus protection.
Cons: This version's a Trojan horse that can shut down Norton installations, leaving you unprotected.
The Bottom Line:
Symantec is unethical with its arm-twisting. In my book that trumps the technical efficiency of the product.
I was a satisfied customer of Norton from the DOS Norton Utilities days, and I used their antivirus software for several years. When you bought Norton Antivirus, it came with a one-year subscription to program and data file updates. The data files are updated constantly as new viruses are covered. The updates ran in the background and I had little trouble with them until this year. In the past, I would get a warning when it was time to update my subscription. Generally I found a new product for less than the subscription cost, so I think I bought a subscription just once.
This year, everything changed and I will never buy another Symantec product again. Yesterday I got a notice that I was due to get a complete program update to Norton Antivirus 2009. I let the download run overnight, and I installed the new product this morning (Jan. 31, 2009). When I restarted my computer, I got a message that my subscription had expired, and the new antivirus program would not run. I also found out that my subscription had expired Jan. 4.
An honest company would have alerted me before Jan. 4 that it was time to renew my subscription and given me a few days to deal with it. Instead, Symantec tricked me with a Trojan horse that has shut off my virus protection. After this shabby treatment, I will never buy anything from Symantec again.
Update on 12/19/09:
I have switched to Kaspersky Anti-Virus 8. It is more expensive than Norton but it has protected me through a year of surfing (albeit on mostly safe sites) and the company has treated me fairly so far. It's a lot cheaper if you can go in with somebody and buy a multi-user license, by the way.
