Wahl Super Taper II 8470-500
It's been a bit over two years that I've been cutting my own hair—not so much to save money (I've gotten my haircuts for free), but for the convenience of not driving 25 minutes to the stylist, searching for parking, and, then, driving home again albeit with a superb cut.
So, for all these months, when I could no longer stand my growth of hair, I would grab some hair between two fingers, and chop it off with my Oster trimmer. It would take me about 30 minutes to cut my hair. I rarely did a good job on the back of my head but, it was passable.
I thought there must be a better way—perhaps, a clipper with attachments that would be an easy guide for length of the hair being cut.
I searched a lot of different trimmers and read loads of reviews. There were a couple of trimmers that had a cutting head set at 90 degrees to the handle to make cutting at the back of the head, easier. I almost went for one of those except that a number of reviews suggested that the trimmer was not ultimately powerful.
I also decided I wanted a trimmer MADE IN THE USA!
The Wahl Super Taper II met that criteria. I purchased on-line and soon received my Wahl trimmer. The trimmer feels heavy (in a good way) and solid. The trimmer has a lever which allows you to change the length at which hair is cut—probably best to trim a beard in the popular unshaven look.
The trimmer also comes with a series of eight color-coded guides ranging from 1/8 of an inch to 1 inch in cutting length. Guides of 1-1/4 inch, and 1-1/2 inches arevavailable at extra cost.
The trimmer also comes with a vial of oil, a small brush to clean the cutting head, and a comb. However, no case is provided to keep everything together. The instruction sheet is cursory; it mostly gives warnings (Do not reach for an appliance that has fallen into water…) but offers no tips on cutting your hair.
I began by attaching (snap on) the one-inch guide. Flip the switch on the side of the trimmer, and it is not unusual to hear a, sort of, business-like electrical pop followed by a smooth humming sound. It probably took me about two minutes to cut all the hair on my head with the one-inch guide. I then replaced it with the quarter-inch guide to bring a closer trim to some of my hair up-front.
In very short order, I had a complete haircut. The hair on the back of my head was too long to be a buzz-cut and too short to be combed down—it just stood up like the tail of some perky bird!
The Wahl Taper II, is a no-nonsense trimmer that is powerful and sharp. (It is a corded trimmer.) Compared with the Oster trimmer—that I've had for many, many years—the Wahl is like a Peterbilt truck compared to a 40 year old Volkswagen Beetle.
It has a last forever feeling about it. It's a pleasure to use, and I highly recommend it.
The American character looks always as if it had just had a rather bad haircut, which gives it, in our eyes at any rate, a greater humanity than the European, which even among its beggars has an all too professional air. (Mary McCarthy)
