Star Wars - Clone Wars: Vol. 1
I got Star Wars Clone wars about a year ago and like a lot of stuff I dont bother sitting down and reviewing. Now I saw the shorts when they originally aired during Toonamis action block, but I decided to pick up the DVD. Well how good is Star Wars Clone Wars volume 1, well its more exciting then the first two episodes of the prequels but then thats not saying much.
Story.
The story in Star Wars Clone Wars volume 1 takes place right at the end of episode 2. Anakin and Obi Wan Kenobi are dispatch to a banking planet who has sided with Count Deku and the sith. Anakin will lead the fight in space while Obi Wan will wage war on land.
After the battle starts there isnt a whole lot of dialogue in scenes because the show is more content on the action. With the creator of Samurai Jack at the helm of the project the show is very much Samurai Jack with Star Wars characters and settings. This is by means a bad thing has the design and the color schemes to give character development despite lack of dialogue. You will see that in scenes like Anakins final duel with Sasjj Ventress on the moon of Yevon. His character starts with a cold blue color but has he gets angry has the fight goes on his character design becomes a bright red. The other several dozen light saber fights that go on are also pretty cool and well coregraph, the coolest would be a throw away story with Mace Windu. You learn just because you remove a Jedis light saber from his hands does not mean hes disarmed.
The show isnt perfect though, like all mini series turned movie DVDs the flow isnt has even has a movie. Take that each episode was not 22 minutes, but just 3 short minutes and we have a show that has a bad case of ADD. One minute your with Obi Wan, next with a throw away character named Kid Fisto, then your back at Anakin for a while, then cut to Mace Windu, and it does it constantly. While it doesnt stop the speed it does get distracting after the first several times.
The animation.
The traditional animation they use for the on ground animation is a mixture of anime and western animation. We see the bright colors and explosions seen in an anime, with the depth that comes from western cartoons. Like I said before this is a marriage between Samurai Jack and Star Wars the on the ground light saber and clone troopers battle have all taken a page out of that shows book. And they capture why Samurai Jack was so fun to watch just for the well cerograph stylized battles. The outer space fights are done with cel-shaded CGI that fit the 2d animation quite well and still manage to jump out yeah has Anakin fights the Genosian up in space.
The DVD
The DVD has a nice assortment of extras in it. Two featurette one was filmed during the making and the other was filmed after the making of the first two seasons. The first one is focused on the creation while the 2nd one is were the 2nd volume is going to go and how it will link up with Star Wars Episode 3. There are 2 commentary tracks to, one was made for the DVD, the other is an online commentary that was made for the Star Wars website. The one made for the DVD is a lot better commentary. In the end the whole package should keep Star Wars geeks happy.
Final Recommendation.
Despite not a lot of dialogue and a bad case of ADD Star Wars Clone Wars is decent fun and a whole lot more entertaining then the first two episodes of Star Wars put together. There is also some nice features on the disc and if youre a star war nut its definitely worth checking out.
