SPARTACUS, based on Howard Fast's popular novel, is Stanley Kubrick's glorious masterpiece about a slave uprising in Rome in 70 B.C. Kirk Douglas, who also served as executive producer, stars as the title character, a man born of a slave woman and a slave master who has known nothing but chains his entire life. After being forced to put on a gladiator show--that almost leads to his death--for wealthy Romans (including a marvelously conniving Laurence Olivier as the power-hungry Crassus), Spartacus leads a slave revolt across Italy that soon has thousands marching on Rome. In SPARTACUS, Men See Themselves.

Author's Rating: Rating: 5/5 stars

Pros: Epic set pieces, generally well handled quieter scenes, classic Alex North score.

Cons: The dialogue suffers at times from the Hollywood "Biblical" tradition.

Bottom Line:
SPARTACUS remains the strongest, most exciting, most moving of Roman Epics because the characters have emotional validity. It is far superior to GLADIATOR (Scott, 2000), which attempted to emulate it. Read More at Epinions.com

It’s Not Kubrickian, But It Is Kubrick

Author's Rating: Rating: 5/5 stars

Pros: A stunning cast delivering uniformly great performances, emotionally honest relationships and historical accuracy and detail.

Cons: By modern standards, the battle scenes are fairly weak.

Bottom Line:
Though not Kubrick's greatest it is, considering the constraints under which he worked, a superb achievement. One of the great films ever made. Not in the top ten, but close. Read More at Epinions.com

Tied with "Sand Pebbles" for best American war movie of the '60's.

Author's Rating: Rating: 5/5 stars

Pros: Action, politics, characters transcending what they thought were their limits.

Cons: Could have benefitted through the addition of plebian characters (neither slaves nor patricians)

Bottom Line:
Oh, wow. Wow. Wow! This movie is "Braveheart," "Gladiator" and "Glory" all rolled into one. Read More at Epinions.com
