If you have a Sony HI-MD recorder - this matches perfect. Otherwise a solid stereo microphone - I highly recommend

I bought this stereo microphone to use on a Sony Hi-MD Mini Disc recorder. I work for a Broadcast Radio Station. I needed something, that would bring in the audio surroundings to the person interviewed, yet, not drown out the subject. At first with no wind screen, I thought it was wasted money. Then I discovered the wind cover for most telephone operator headsets, fit it perfect. Problem solved.

This microphone will NOT separate left and right channels. The dual microphones are too close to each other and they are not directional patterned formatted. But they do capture front and sides very well. They are extremely sensitive and will record any bumps or motor noises if left on a hard surface. They seem to also record music very well. I sat in the 3rd row and recorded my daughters first solo school concert and the play back was like I was right next to her. The Sony Stereo microphone also captured the sound off the school gym walls and made it even more life like. Of course the quality depends on your recorder. But the match to a Sony Hi-MD recorder can not be beat.

What I like...
I love the fact it uses a 2.5 mm stereo mini jack cord that plugs directly into the base of the microphone. That means you can build or buy a cord with the proper length. Again make sure it has a stereo jack input. The mike is hardy, but not 100 percent waterproof. I have used it in the rain (had no choice) but I was careful to make sure it had a wind screen, as the first level of protection. I also like the fact it is powered by the recorder and needs no funny batteries. Just plug it in and go.

What could be improved..
I think it should come with a set of wind screens. Sony certainly knows how sensitive the microphone is to wind. It should also come with better spec's. I have no clue what is the maximum length cord or voltage requirements are.

Yes I would recommend this microphone. It has held up to broadcast standards, and at less than $50.00 it sounds as good as some very expensive Shure Microphones. Over the FM radio your really can't tell the difference.
